Early 2005 Eurosport.com
Are you a young cyclist aged 16-20, with a lot of potential? Would you like the chance to work with the world's best trainers in order to become one of the word's best riders?
If you answered yes to all of these criteria then the Eurosport Challenge is for you! Later this year we will be holding a week long event looking for riders to showcase their talents in all sorts of terrain. The best of the best will win the best possible reward. So what are you waiting for?
We have received backing from Cycling organisations throughout Europe and they will be holding Preparation races to see who will qualify for the big event.

Yes they all have a great potential *cough* 8 *cough* but being young their skills won't start too good. Only 3 riders in my team are real, and they are the 3 brits - the rest are made up.
July 2005 - Eurosport Challenge ~ UK Results Eurosport.co.uk
The first of many Eurosport Challenge course was held over the weekend and the victor was the recent winner of the Welsh Senior Road Race Championship, 19 year old Geraint Thomas. Thomas won the hilly stage to Newport to take the win. 17 year old Ben Swift was second overall. Adam Blyhe is just 15 and gianed a wildcard entry into the race and he was stunning having won the first stage, he couldnt quite perform as well in the following stages but we were certainly impressed. There were also some strong Irish performances.

The benelux event took place in Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg and it was a young cousin of 2 pro stars that took the honours. Marc Schleck. The pre-race favourite was the brother of a certain Belgian who has beeen in top Sprinting form recently, and like his brother he is a strong sprinter.
Scandinavia Results Eurosport.no
Norway played host to the Sacandinavian sector of the Eurosport challenge with the Focus on 2 norwegians Edvald Bossen Hagen and Jurgen Schanke. The two had dominated the Norwegian circuit and it was the widely conceive opinion that only one Norwegian would be selected for the Eurosport squad. Schanke proved the stronger and Hagen crashed anyway in the flat stage. Dane Kurt Elkjær was determined to make an impression and took the decisive mountain stage in style.

The local Slovakians struggled as Croatian Mladan Petrić won the event.
Western Europe Results Eurosport.de
Switzerland and Germany both held parts of the contest but it was a Czech rider that took overall honours, David Rozehnal due to his aggressive spirit. This was despite a poor performance in the mountains. The stage was won by Liechtenstein rider Christoph Biedermann.

December 2006 - The Squad is Announced Eurosport.com
We can now officially announce the squad for the continental Eurosport.com team.
The team is based in the UK and 4 key elements of the squad are riders from the British Isles.
Ben Swift, 18  is aiming to become a Sprinter
Adam Blythe, 16 will aim to be a skilled 'cobbler'
Geraint Thomas, 19 starts his career developing his Hilly skills but has indicated that he plans to convert into a Climber after a year or so.
Aidan Finegan, 16  The Irishman hopes to emulate Stephen Roche and become the next Irish Grand Tour winner
Moving on to Benelux:
Marc Schleck, 17  Marc will follow his 2 cousins into climbing.
Eric Kuijlen, 16  Eric with initially get some cobbles skill, before trying to gain the skills necesarily to win the Amstel Gold.
Sven Boonen, 17  Sven naively wants to follow his brother into Sprinting, we hope to chnage his views soon enough though.
Scandinavia:
Jurgen Schánke, 17  Since last beating Hagen, Hagen has developed immensely so Schanke will be doing his best to imrpove his sprinting skills.

I may have to wait til 2008 (In-game) until I start domination, as hopefully that will be my first year in the ProTour. I'll finish off the riders now.
Kurt Elkjær, 18  Better than Michael Rasmussen? Kurt sure hopes he will be and we know that he has the potential.
Jani Minkenen, 19  Can you name a finish rider to have won the Ronde, Roubaix or Gent - Wevelgem? We hope you will be able to in the future.
Igors Rinkus, 18  Igors' hero is Lance Armstrong, but while he may not win 7 TdF's he could well win it once, some day.
Vitalijas Žvirgždauskas, 19  Žvirgždauskas is looking forward to his Procareer as a specialist Time Trialer, the Commentators for Eurosport are less enthusiastic though. I wonder why?
Andreas Svensson, 19  At 19 Thomas Lovkvist was tipped for stardom but a few years on he hasnt delivered, this will not be the case for Svensson who is currently focusing on time trials.
Eastern Europe
Mladan Petric, 16  Mladan will focus on Sprinting, buoyed on by his success in the Eurosport challenge.
Miroslav Božic, 15  , Miroslav aims to become the first Teenager to win Le Tour. Anything is possible!
Western Europe
Raimund Kulovits, 18  An aggressive rider.
David Rozehnal, 17  Much has been said about what this Czech rider should focus on, but he has revealed to us that he dreams of being the Czech national champion, so he will currently work to imrpove his sprinting legs. His real forte though could come in the hills.
Neither Frédéric Lecoissas  or Stefano Lucarelli  (Both 17) currently hold plans or winning their native grand tours, but they are not sure what they are aiming for yet.
Jochen Matschke, 20  Having turned 20 on Christmas Day, Jochen is currently the oldest in the team but this does not mean he has any more experience.
Mauro Lustrinelli, 16  Mauro dreams of winning the Tour de Romandie, Let's hope his dreams become reality.

Swift shows promise as Gimore wins Eurosport.co.uk
Belgian rider Matt Gilmore won the Doha Gp, sprinting to win ahead of his companions. The break did contain Eurosport's very own brit Ben Swift i nhis first race as a pro.
Ben was hoping to take a top 10 placing but he began to feel the heat and with 18km to go he was forced to let go, he was then swallowed up by the sprinting pack twards the end and finished 56th, the best from the team.
Thomas, Schanke, Blythe, Schleck, Boonen, Petric and Finegan were the other riders.
Pellizotti rules Switzerland Eurosport.ch
Franco Pellizotti defeated 146 others today as he won the GP Chiasso, ahead of Wielinga, Guerini, Areeitenundia and Totschnig.
These riders bode their team through many early attacks and made their moves on the last lap of the circuit.
Eurosport.com's own youth team took part in the event and struggled. Ben Swift again found the break and looked the stronger, but faded towards the end. Geraint Thomas was the highest finisher, down in 114th. A tough baptism of fire for the team who do not plan to ride many races in the first half of this year.
In other news, Tom Boonen won Omloop Het Volk, ahead of Backstedt, Cancellara, Wauters and Eisel. Samuel Sanchez also secured victory in the Vuelta a Valenciana, with Brit David Millar a surprise 5th overall.

not an awesome start,
but you can't expect too much from a team full of teenagers, it's only a matter of time before they grow into very good riders, and hopefully it won't be too long until the 1st win |

Eurosport staff Slams Youth Team Feb 28th Eurosport.com
A member of the EuroSport franchise, Jeremy Smith has today slammed the idea of a Eurosport youth team following another disappointing performance at the Classic de Almeria.
The race itself resulted in a Swedish 1-2, with Unibet's Ljungblad winning but Igors Rinkus was the best EuroSport finisher, more than 8 minutes down.
This is what the Smith, who has in the past confessed to knowing nothing about Cycling, had to say.
"It's a disgrace to the name of Eurosport. These kids are too young and too crap.
Unless some of them start getting fairly decent results I wil ldo my best to get the project ended!" |

Let's have a look at some of the top Australian cyclists so far in 2006.
Robbie McEwen
A near perfect start to the year for Robbie McEwen, who currently leads the UCI Rankings.
Robbie yet again become the Australian champion before going on to win the biggest Australian race: The Tour Down Under having won 2 stages and taken 2nd in 2 others.
His form continued into February with 3 stafe wins in the Etoile de Bessegs and another win at a stage oif the Volta ao Algarve.
Jonathon Clarke
Clarke only needed 1 stage win to win the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic for Southaustralia.com. He also took 21st overall in the Tour Down Under. He is currently ranked 27th in the UCI rankings and 14th in the continental rankings.
Stuart O'Grady
)'Grady finished 6th overall in the Tour of California, in an event controleld by CSC. Along the way he won a stage and also captured the points standings.
James Meadley, Allan Davis, Baden Cooke and Simon Gerrans have a
all had podium finishes so far this season.
Australia is ranked 5th in the UCI Rankings and 7th in the Continental Rankings. |

Geraint Thomas isn't actually included in the PCM Spain 06 database. He rode most of 2006 for the Great Britain team and rode as a Stagiare for Saunier Duval towards the end. This year he is riding for Barloworld. |
