Vuelta a Espana - Stage 7
SportingNonsense

A nasty climb halfway through, but it will all be decided in the summit finish.

Visconti, Velo, Parra Bustamonte and Dupont are the break.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta41.png

Visconti imploded on the climb halfway through as Velo struggled to hang on to the other two.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta42.png

Not much happened over the next climb, although Mayo did attack with Pecharroman and Mercado. In the descent though, disaster for Andreas Kloden.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta43.png
He got up and going again but the peleton are qoing quick now and any hopes Kloden had of overall victory are surely gone.

Mayo manages to catch the 3 man breakaway as we head towards the decisive final climb.

Gesink attacks! Mancebo and Arroyo respond, as do Zubeldia and Danielson.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta45.png

They close in on Mayo, having passed the rest of the break.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta46.png

And theyve soon dropped the Spaniard.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta47.png

But Carlsberg and Credit Agricole have kept up a very strong chase, and the gap for the 5 is small when Vinokourov attacks.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta48.png

He is not as strong today though and Mancebo claws the Kazakh back and comes through to take the KoM points.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta49.png

So, an elite group of 12 leads up the climb with 4km to go.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta50.png
Danielson, Gesink, Mancebo, Vinokourov, Bruseghin, Fothen, Zubeldia, Dekker, Gutierrez Cataluna, Rujano, Arroyo, Sanchez Gonzalez.

Only Mancebo, Vinokourov and Danielson have taken relays, suggesting that they are the strongest today. But suddenly - Gesink cracks!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta51.png

They keep on climbing, and Vinokourov is on the front as the sprint begins.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta52.png

And noone can get past him! Vinokourov wins again! Mancebo clings onto 2nd ahead of a fast finishing Fothen, with Zubeldia 4th.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/vuelta53.png

Samuel Sanchez lost a minute in the final sprint, but Kloden lost a lot more. He had caught the back of the peleton, which was led home in 17th place by Denis Menchov - 3 minutes down. But while many of the peleton sprinted, Kloden did not, and through time gaps going badly for him, Kloden ends up losing 5 minutes and slipping to 14th in the GC.
