Giro della Valle d'Aosta Stage 5
mb2612
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0025_zps11158b37.jpg
Our final road stage is the biggest of them all. Three massive climbs, can Arroyo manage to turn around his defict to Marzano? Will any of the riders 3 minutes back go off on a flyer, causing havoc? The favourites are the big 3: Arroyo (KBG), Marzano (KEN) and Menchov (FCB)
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0026_zps7739f9bb.jpg

Two riders jump clear early: Taubel (ABC) and Rovira (FCB). Neither are any threat at all.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0027_zps6386b39e.jpg

Taubel takes the sprint. In teh peloton, Duque (DBG) takes third
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0028_zps27558e6c.jpg

Rovira wins the first, 4th category, climb as expected. Mori (KEN) rolls over 5 minutes down in third.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0029_zps343e5488.jpg

Taubel takes the final sprint, just before we start to climb properly. Duque again takes third.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0030_zpsc1b1b380.jpg

We haven't been climbing long when Ndibri (KAB) and Niyonshuti (MTN) decide to attack.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0031_zps5e982411.jpg

Ronimois tries to follow them, but he waits too long, and they have a two minute advantage over him.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0032_zps8b51532b.jpg

Ndibri and Niyontushi quickly catch the leaders. Their advantage over the bunch is 5'33", btu Kappa have started to up the pace.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0033_zps394fea4b.jpg

Iberia and DBG also lend a rider to the chase.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0034_zpscc17d88e.jpg

Ndibri leads over the top of the climb, Niyontushi is following, with Rovira doing well to stay with them.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0035_zps841bd597.jpg

Taubel is 30 seconds back
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0036_zps49cf12fc.jpg

Ronimois is at 2'25"
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0037_zps1fabaa2e.jpg

Iberia have taken up the chase in the second half of the climb, and they the 42 man bunch over the top at 5'22"
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0038_zps17e0e7ef.jpg

Taubel catches the leaders on the descent.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0039_zps5e60481a.jpg

As the four men start to climb again, their gap has been reduced to 4 minutes. Still 53km to go for them.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0040_zps239050b1.jpg

This climb is the same as the final one, and with 5km to the line, but 7km to the top of the climb Rovira is getting dropped.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0041_zps64a8d700.jpg

Iberia catch Taubel with 5.4km to climb. They have cut Ndibri's lead to just 3'11"
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0043_zps74962531.jpg

The leaders cross the line for the first time, 38km to go, 3'10" the advantage.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0044_zps93c53dcc.jpg

It's Niyonshuti over the top first this time. He and Ndibri are still working well together.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0045_zps11a96801.jpg

Ronimois is now in third 2'08" behind
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0046_zpsfa69f4da.jpg

Then Rovira at 2'36"
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0047_zpsc20b84b3.jpg

Not on his heels are the peloton, at 2'50" meaning Marzano is back in provisional yellow.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0048_zpsaf3a2905.jpg

Rovira and Ronimois are both pulled back on the descent.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0049_zpsb0463056.jpg

The leaders descend much better this time, and still have 2'43" of a lead when they hit the final few km of flat before the climb.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0050_zpsc26c72db.jpg

The peloton is strung out as they try to make up as much ground as possible on the flat.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0051_zps0d142133.jpg

But the bunch still hits the 15km long closing climb with a 2'29" deficit.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0052_zps3ce3e6b2.jpg

Marzano weighs up his options, then decides to attack.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0053_zps6987c782.jpg

Martinez (KAB) and Silva (MCC) are straight after him.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0054_zps0f681451.jpg

Arroyo (KBG) can't afford to let this go, Moreno (ICV) and Mora (MCC) follow as well.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0055_zps87ae1b51.jpg

Parra Busamante also joins the fun. When they regroup Marzano has a 20 second lead on the other 6.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0056_zps1ee0a783.jpg

Mora can't stay with them, and drops back to the waiting peloton.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0057_zps1ace203a.jpg

Arroyo is on a mission today, Moreno and Parra Bussamante are the only two who can follow as he chases Marzano.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0058_zps63d309ad.jpg

Then Parra Bussamante also lets go.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0059_zps58c96f38.jpg

The gap between Arroyo and Marzano just won't shrink, though Ndibri and Niyontushi are getting closer all the time.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0060_zpsba60ec01.jpg

As Marzano makes the catch Ndibri vainly attacks.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0061_zpsba7a18a7.jpg

Ndibri gets a small gap, forcing Marzano to chase.

As Marzano pulls up to Ndibri's rear wheel Arroyo is still 30 seconds behind.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0062_zps4e0392ee.jpg

Marzano then decides to wait before taking up the pace, allowing Arroyo back up to him. Ndibri attacks again.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0063_zps5957de40.jpg

Arroyo immediately tries to follow Ndibri, as does Moreno.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0064_zps67dcde7f.jpg

Marzano is shellshocked as Ndibri and Arroyo drive clear of him.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0065_zpsa8343c4f.jpg

Again it's Arroyo against Marzano, but this time it's Marzano chasing.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0066_zps18033d93.jpg

Ndibri can't hold Arroyo's wheel, but is the rabbit that allows Marzano back up to Arroyo.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0067_zps8228639f.jpg

Moreno has done nothing but follow wheels all climb, now attacks.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0068_zps5936e1c6.jpg

Arroyo follows, while Marzano is left standing
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0069_zpse717bad1.jpg

Arroyo and Moreno quickly build a 30 second lead.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0070_zpsf955843d.jpg

Marzano hasn't given up, and his pace is enough to drop Ndibri and Niyontushi.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0071_zpsfeb233bb.jpg

Arroyo doesn't want to tow Moreno to the line, but Moreno is refusing to work, allowing Marzano to come back to them.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0072_zps88661385.jpg

Arroyo thus tries to attack again.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0073_zps9137478b.jpg

He can't get clear, and Marzano is almost upon them.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0074_zpse283e3cd.jpg

Under the kite all three are together.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0075_zps8ab5ab48.jpg

Marzano comes round Moreno
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0076_zpsec0fbe23.jpg

Pulls clear of Arroyo.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0077_zps9d196167.jpg

And takes the stage, securing the overall win.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0078_zpsbd8d30a7.jpg

Arroyo takes second, with Moreno third.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0079_zps4330274e.jpg

1 minute behind, Ndibri drops Niyontushi to take 4th.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0080_zps834f4e2d.jpg

Parra Bustamante rode the whole climb solo, coming in at 1'52"
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0081_zps80ca6693.jpg

Then comes Menchov, who sat in the peloton until the final couple of kilometres, at 2'24"
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0082_zps5cfda9ef.jpg

Just ahead of Perez sanchez, who lead in the peloton.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%205/PCM0083_zps540872d9.jpg

So, Marzano didn't look unbeatable today, but he was better than Arroyo, and that was enough to give him the stage and, surely, the overall tomorrow.
