Teach My Friend About Professional Cycling
Cycleman123
Hi everyone! I was just trying to explain the world of pro cycling to a friend of mine, but didn't know really what to say. I was hoping you guys could help me and post stuff here that he could learn about. Pretty much about how cycling works, what happens in and between races, the different types of races and stuff like that. I must warn you, this is no easy task, to start of my "course" I asked him how long he thought a stage was... He said 6km. I asked him to guess again and he said "18km, or is that way too long?"
Please help my disadvantaged friend.

First of all, I would start with the distinction between the road race, individual time trial and team time trial. Then the flat, hilly, and mountain stages etc. If he is able to find out who is strong at what, he should be able to find out the favorites for some races, which is the next part you will talk about. You can teach him at least the WorldTour races and some semi-classics. You could also give him a little insight in all the great talents around. I think he should know the basics then

Not want to be asshole or something like that, but i laughed pretty much on this: "18km, or is that way too long?". Grin

I agree with everything Selwink said, let him watch some TV races after you tell everything above to him. Wink

Here's a small TdF guide with some Cycling terms to help as well. It is Sky's though, I'm afraid Pfft
https://www.teamsk...39,00.html

Also, let him watch some cycling stage that involved a lot of tactic. I've heard that f.e. Olympics 2012 was a great inspiration and introduction in watching cycling for a lot of guys.

Also, don't forget to tell him that Kelderman is the next big thing in stage-racing Pfft

Easy. Let him watch some races, especially TDF, Giro, Vuelta.
I learned everything I know about cycling in 3 years by watching every grand tour and some races like paris-roubaix. etc.

During the races you explain to the friend what a type of race that is. (TT, Flat, Mountain, Hilly)

Then when he learns about that, learn him about the history of cycling. I learned from wikipedia these past 3 years Grin

Might also be worth bringing up the difference between stage races and classics. It seems to me like a thing people who don't follow cycling are confused by.

I wouldn't go into much detail about specific riders, though. Better to let him watch a few races to build up interest first.

This is a conversation I had with him, prepare to laugh
Me "Do you know who Lance Armstrong is?"
Him "Isn't he the guy that went to the moon?"
*later*
Me "Why was he bad?"
Him "Because he went to the moon without his parents' permission?"
Me "No, he took steroids."
Him "What!? He took drugs on the moon!? How did he take them there? Don't they do checks!?"

Now you all realise my problem Wink

Definitely show him this guide by Team Sky. It is a great starter. Except for the fact that it's team sky Rolling Eyes

Also everything else people have said are good ideas. But definitely show him Fabian Cancellara and Jens Voigt. They are the only 2 robots in the professional Peloton.

Well, actually, I played PCM only just after I discovered the basics of cycling, and it helped me learn a lot about cycling and especially it's cyclists. Though I must say that I already knew a lot of cyclists before that, I always like to be good informed about a sport when watching it. I did always watch the TdF and check results once in a while.
Anyway,'point is, after getting the basics, PCM is a great way to get more into cycling...
