Stage 3 is here, and having taken it easy for the first two days, surely today is the one where the big guns will shine. Moreno (ICV), Marzano (KEN) and Arroyo (DBG) are favourites. They must also be targetting yellow, and Ihlenfeldt (MTN) really shouldn't be able to hang on today.
Despite the breakaway successes over the last two days, no one is interested in attacking today. Duque (DBG) is interested in taking the sprint though, Da Dalto (KEN) and Coyot (ABC) follow him.
MTN are loving the fact that no one is interested today. Over the first categorised climb, admittedly just a cat 4 warm up, MTN go 1-2-3 with Nel, Lutsenko and Lemus Davila.
As we approach the bottom of the Cat 1 climb 3 riders finally decide to attack: Kiserlovski (KEN), Gonzalo (FCB) and Duran (ABC)
Gonzalo wins the sprint from Duran at the base of the climb. The three attackers have already ulled out a minutes advantage, and are all solid climbers.
This climb is averaging almost 8% and the three attackers push their lead to 4 minutes with still 8km to climb.
This forces Arroyo to send Ibarguren(DBG) forward to up the pace.
Coyot is amoung the first riders dropped, yesterday's heroics long forgotten.
Mobil Castrol are now helping DBG out, and they have pulled the gap down slightly, to 3'45".
Kiserlovski is first over the top, the Gonzalo and Duran. 46km to ride, and the peloton is 3'40" behind.
Die Berg Komt are flying down the descent, and have the gap under 3 minutes as we approach the bottom.
When the climbing restarts the breakaway riders show they are stronger than any domestiques, and even with MTN sending men forward as well, the gap starts to slowly rise again.
Moreno (ICV) decides to utilise the lack of depth in the main teams by attacking now, with 27km left.
He quickly builds a 45 second lead on the peloton. He will want to catch the break as soon as possible though.
The pace is too much for Gingsjo (VTF) and he is forced to let go of the 40 man peloton.
Kiserlovski (KEN) leads over the top of the hill. Gonzalo is again second.
It's bad news for their cahnce of a stage win though, as Moreno is just 15" behind them.
The peloton haven't let up either, coming over the top at +1'05". Finally today is a day for the favourites.
There are just 25 men left in the bunch, including the, clearly flagging, Ihlenfeldt.
Moreno catches the break on the downhill and continues to push on.
As Moreno leads onto the final, 13.5km climb his advantage is down to just 36 seconds.
And Ndibri (KAB) attacks straight away.
He goes past the break and Moreno tries to follow. The peloton are snapping at their heels though.
And it all comes back together. MTN are trying to take advantage of the momentary respite to move Ihlenfeldt forwards.
Carrara (ABC), Mora (MCC) and Ndibri (KAB) attack again.
They go nowhere, but here comes Gonzalo (FCB) followed by Moreno (ICV), Kisverlovski (KEN), Arroyo (DBG) and Parra Busamante (BVP)
Moreno and Gonzalo get a small gap, and are joined by Mora, who tries to push on. Behind, Menchov (FCB) and Marzano (KEN) are attacking.
Carrara (ABC) also attacks as MTN desperately try to keep it all together.
Marzano won't be denied, and he and Carrara attack again.
Carrara struggles to follow Marzano, but Moreno has bounded after him.
Niyontushi is pulling hard holding the two leaders advantage to just 22" as this 10% section goes on and on.
Menchov takes over the pace making, but Arroyo decides this is the moment to attack.
Up front Moreno has run out of steam and has to let Marzano go.
With the gradient softening to just 7.5% Niyontushi can see all the atackers ahead of him. With Ihlenfeldt looking like he's found a second wind it's just a matter of reeling them in.
Menchov pulls Parra Bussamante up to the flagging Moreno.
[imghttps://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Aosta%201/PCM0040_zps1038c231.jpg][/img]
with 5.6km to go we are back at the final 10% section. Marzano has pushed his lead out to twenty seconds.
Menchov has dropped Moreno and Parra Busamante
Further back Ihlenfeldt is forced to do the chasing himself.
It looks like Moreno will have to settle for fifth as Parra Busamante drops him as well.
The final 3km are a false flat, and Arroyo is loosing time to Marzano, he is now 30 seconds back.
And with everyone apparently equally shattered, Marzano has enough in the tank to drive to a dominant victory.
Arroyo is second at +35"
Then comes Menchov, Parra Busamante and Moreno, all about 15 seconds apart.
Mora takes 6th at 2'28", which is enough to give him the points jersey.
Then Gonzalo leads in the peloton, just inside three minutes.
Marzano's dominant victory leaves Arroyo in second 40 seconds behind. The race is tough enough that it's not game over, but Marzano was strong enough that it's very hard to see him decisively gapped. Ihlenfeldt manages to stay in third overall.
