Stage 1 of Aosta is here, this flat stage has some serious challenges in it, although the favourites are still sprinters, Dall'Antonia (MCC), Duque (DBG) and Lequarte (FCB). Moreno (ICV) is also considered a dangerman should the sprinters get tired.
And the 75 riders get underway.
There is a fast start, meaning no one gets away before the first sprint. Dall'Antonia (MCC) takes it ahead of Lequatre (FCB) and Duque (DBG)
Three riders the go clear: Chacon (ICV) Gingsjo (VTF) and Lemus Davila (MTN)
L. Davila takes the first climb ahead of Chancon and Gingsjo
The order is reversed at the sprint, with Gingsjo taking the win this time.
Chacon wins the second climb, with Gingsjo second
It's a tight sprint, but L. Davila sneaks through to take it from Chacon and Gingsjo
With 48km to go Chacon leads Gingsjo and L. Davila over the top of the third climb. They can see the peloton 3'41" down the road.
It's bad news for Barca as Lequatre falls. Simon is dropping back to help him, but the deficit is already over two minutes.
Dall'Antonia will find it slightly harder today as his leadout man, Eefting is dropped.
Gingsjo wins the final climb of the day, with Chacon and L.Deavila following. The gap is still 2'42" due to the peloton's sedate pace uphill, however with just 28km to go the break now has a chance.
The break go through 20km to go with the gap still at 2'37"
Mori (KEN) pulls it down to 2 minutes with 16km left
With the gap at 1'33" and 13km still to ride L. Davila decides his only hope is to win solo
with 10km to go he has pulled out a twenty second gap. The bunch is still 1'33" behind
DBG did a lot of work earlier on, and now have finally sent De Weert up to help Mori out. They gap is still at 1'30" though.
Mori is back on the front soon after though. Surely he can't pull the break back alone.
L. Davila still has a 22" advantage, however the disadvantage of being 1 vs 2 is beginning to show.
With 5km to go Gingsjo has just about pulled him back, Chacon is sitting in, waiting.
Mori leads the peloton under the 5km to go banner, still 1 minute in arrears.
Mori doesn't have the legs to close the gap further, so with 2.5km to go it is down to the three men who have been out all day.
No one wants to be the first to move, but again it's L. Davila who tries to get the jump on his rivals sprinting with just 1.2km to go.
Gingsjo tries to respond, but L. Davila has a small gap. Chacon has done no work, but still isn't sprinting yet.
800m to go, and it's down to who has most left in the tank
Gingsjo is closing on L. Davila
Gingsjo pulls into the lead, does Chacon have the legs to come round?
No, Gingsjo takes the stage and a surprise yellow jersey.
Chacon manages second, with Lemus Davila a valiant third.
Moreno wins the sprint ahead of Moren, justifying the sprinters teams decision not to pull back the break.
