I am having problems with downhill finishes. If I get my guy to the top first the pack will normally catch him on the descent even if he has a decent DH skill.
IRL a decent descender should make better time on a chasing pack during a technical descent as he can take better racing lines than the pack can. However I cannot make this work.
Really? I actually love downhill finishes...I force a bunch of riders over the top and I attack all the way to the line...usually steals the win for me even if the rider has a poor DH stat

Big thanks to jdog for making this AMAZING userbar!
You can gain a lot of time on downhill finishes if you play it right. Make sure you stay in good position until the last mountaintop while keeping most of your red bar.
Then, when at the top, attack and keep going at top speed. Empty your red bar in the downhill and try to get your yellow bar near empty at the finish as well.
I think the AI chases you in the downhill when they still have a lot of energy left and when there is a flat or uphill section at the finish. In this case they'll start grouping up and reeling you in. I've had this happen in the double Alpe d'huez stage for example. at the first pass of the summit, the entire field was scattered. But at the start of the second climb, everyone was back together, because of the chasing in the downhill.
