The final stage of this years ENECO Tour of Benelux has been declared as a hilly stage so the chances of Cancellara losing his leaders jersey is pretty high, but the form he's been on, who knows what will happen. The outright favourite today is Rebellin, but others could challenge like Nocentini and Cobo.
Hinault, Kohut and Knees are the madmen today as they try to conquer a hilly 200km stage. Hinault took the first sprint ahead of Knees and Kohut.
Many riders were dropping out of the peleton on the hills including Petacchi, and also a disastrous day for this man:
It's Posthuma, 3rd in the GC and he is dropped from the peleton, an incredibly bad day for him. As he is dropped there are attacks from the peleton!!
Paolini is off and Monfort, Ballan, Nuyens, Pineau, Castaño and Calzati follow him. There is still a good 60kms left of riding, but they decide this is the right time. None of the big favourites agree and stay within the peleton.
With 50kms to go we still have Knees and Hinault up front.
A group of 6 riders are in pursuit, Nuyens, Pineau, Monfort, Paolini, Calzati and Kohut (about to be dropped).
Behind them Ballan and Castaño haven't quite managed to get into the group of 6 but are battling hard to bridge up.
With 33kms to go, Monfort and Pineau leave their group and have caught and past Knees and Hinault. Behind them is a group of 4 including, Calzati, Ballan, Paolini and Nuyens. Castaño is dropping back towards the peleton. Also Posthuma has fought his way back into the peleton. Bad news for Accumalux though as Niemiec (8th GC) punctures and they've lost a big helper for Cancellara who is still in the lead group along with Boonen as well.
20kms to go and Gerdemann attacks! He is followed by Posthuma, what a come-back! Joly, Cornu and Vanendert also follow. Rebellin and Nocenti wait a couple of seconds but they follow as well.
Then terrible news for Posthuma again as he crashes, and as he gets up he has to say goodbye to the peleton again, what an unlucky day for him.
With 15kms to go all the attackers who followed Gerdemann are brought back, including Gerdemann himself. We now have a front group of 3, Monfort, Pineau and Paolini. They are trailed by Ballan who is solo, Nuyens who is solo behind Ballan and Calzati who is solo behind him.
Suddenly with 7kms to the finish, we have Ballan at the head of the race solo! What an extraordinary stage, the lead group is allways changing. Paolini is trying to bridge up to him and he has Pineau and Nuyens trailing him.
Attack by Cancellara!! He was still in the lead-group as was Boonen who follows him!! Only 3kms left though, Ballan might make it. Although Nuyens and Paolini bridge up to him with 2.5kms left and Paolini is a much better sprinter.
They only started sprinting with 0.9kms to go and Boonen is chargin them down, will they make it, or will it be another victory for Tornado Tom and the leaders jersey?!
Ballan wins! Great ride by him, Paolini and Nuyens. Boonen manages 4th, and the judge says there isn't a gap between him and Cancellara so Fabian Cancellara wins the ENECO Tour of Benelux 2008. Cancellara and Boonen were a different class in this race and deserved their respective jerseys. Also what I thought to be an awful day for Posthuma was actually much worse ans he drops from 3rd place in the overall, to 25th; Rik Verbrugghe takes his place and claims 3rd place.
