Trying to find information on why he is 17 minutes down and I am assuming a crash but do not see any articles.

This was the only article I found, which simply states that he said he could not keep up.

In de 2de rit had ik heel de tijd last aan mijn darmen en voelde dan ook de kracht wegvloeien uit mijn benen. Nu is de focus enkel nog op een ritzege.

Overrated. Excellent for breakaways, but never a real GC contender.

Would barely have been top 10 in a weak 2012 Giro if the favourites hadn't decided to sit up and do nothing on the Stelvio stage.
