The final day of the Ster ZLM Tour and it's by far the easiest looking stage: a pan-flat 160km ride from Schijndel to Boxtel, two Intermediate Sprints, no real difficulties except of the temperatures (32 degrees).
So it's a day for the sprinters if everything goes as expected: former race-leader Guarnieri looks in great shape. He almost managed to defend his lead in yesterday's hilly stage (+ 0.32 in GC) and some more bonus seconds could make him re-enter the Top-5/10 at least.
Most dangerous GC-contender should be Gavazzi (+ 0.12) though: the Italian is the only remaining sprinter within 20 seconds to race-leader Levarlet.
The first breakaway attempt is allowed to stay clear:
Van der Lijke (as GC's best here: + 1.46 as 34th)
Silvestre
Hayakawa
Hampton
esatblished a 2-minutes gap with still 148km remaining.
Van der Lijke is the only one going for the two sprints, collecting 12 more points to the 10 he already had. With 22 points, he could finish in point's Top-10.
While Bouygues did most of the work in the chase through the whole day, it's the sprinter-teams Vespa, Rothaus and Vueling taking control with now already less than 10km to go!
Nothing special happened in the meantime and also the breakaway couldn't hold on to their lead, even though Van der Lijke gives it a last try.
But no chance. It's going to be a mass-sprint today, just as expected. Rothaus set up a train for Vantomme, with several other sprinters staying behind for now!
is now moving forward with a second train, so let's have a look at who's at the front with now 2km remaining:
Velits Cucinotta Vantomme Kupfernagel Nelson Weylandt Pedersen Kip Reimer Traksel Kennaugh
So no sign of Guarnieri or Gavazzi yet! Especially Guarnieri is a real surprise, as he finished 1st and 2nd in the flat stages so far.
We're under the kite and Cucinotta is still leading out Vantomme and Kupfernagel!
Also the Vueling-train is moving forward with Traksel behind.. on the left Weylandt and Gavazzi are trying to accelerate! So a chance for Gavazzi (GC + 0.12) to gain bonus seconds?
Ain't looking good for Gavazzi, as he can't keep his opponents' pace!
Vantomme had a nice leadout and stays in the lead, now facing Kupfernagel and Kennaugh from left and right!
Behind it's Nelson and Traksel trying to hang on..
But Vantomme maintains his small advantage, taking out the final stage of the ZLM Tour! Well done, back to 2013 mode, right?!
Kennaugh sprints for yet another podium-finish to secure the points-jersey! Kupfernagel completes today's podium, ahead of an again strong Traksel and Nelson.
That's what his manager wanted to see: Maxime Vantomme winnning!
And another manager will be happy to see Levarlet winning the overall! Neither Gavazzi (9th) nor Guarnieri (18th) could score bonus seconds today.
The only change within GC's Top-10 is Iglinski sneaking on 10th position thanks to better stage-placementes than King, who drops on 12th.
Roche and Gavazzi complete the tour's podium, with Flügel and a surprising Vanbilsen on further positions. The puncheurs managed to take out this race, even though some top-favorites would have hoped for a more selective 3rd stage.
