Chicchi, Keough, and Soupe are the favourites but after
Demare's win on stage 1 he has to be feeling rather confident as well.
Although the sprint point comes later from the start than yesterday,
breakaways aren't catching anybody's interest here in the first two days.
So the sprinters have some fun at the first sprint point with Keough (in white) taking it over Cano and Demare. The result moves Keough into the lead in the points competition over Demare.
Shortly after comes our first attacks to get into the breakaway, and it's none other then future star Dombrowski with Mockus.
And that's your breakaway of the day. But with only 2 categorized climbs today Barbari will hold onto his KoM jersey for stage 3.
Was there any doubt that Dombrowski wasn't going to win that battle up the climb?
The breakaway rides through the final sprint point leaving a 3rd place and 2 points available for the peloton, and all of the top sprinters battle for it. And it's the yellow jersey of Demare taking it ahead of Cano and Keough. This could also help him retain the yellow jersey for another day if he doesn't have a strong finish.
Dombrowski just rides away from Mockus at the final KoM point so he does take the maximum 12 points available for today in that competition. But their lead with 33kms to go is just over a minute.
As Mockus is almost caught there is an attack by a Canadian. It's Salas.
Salas joins Dombrowski with 20kms to go with 1'10" lead over the peloton.
But they had no chance as AMEX brings everything together with 15kms to go.
Some buzz behind the peloton as a few riders have been dropped.
Gavazzi, Porsev, Kaupas
Becerra, Damrow, Veilleux
Strange to see some notable riders get dropped from teams that had a man in the breakaway.
And they aren't coming back as AMEX and BCR are pushing the tempo.
The pace is extremely high, if you can't hang on your getting dropped as
Aguilar is surprisingly thrown off the back.
Chicchi is struggling to hang on as well!
For the second straight day it's Firsanov leading out Cano. But behind are a few new faces in Soupe and Houle. The spectators are cheering like crazy! Behind them it's our podium from stage 1; Nardin, Demare, and Keough.
What is this! Cano pulls the chair out from under the rest of sprinters by slowing down and allowing Firsanov to go for glory! It's an extremely risk move but if Cano doesn't have the legs today it could be their best shot at a stage win.
Firsanov has a 12 second gap as he turns the corner to see the banner.
Behind it's chaos as everybody is fighting for themselves now. In the first few rows of riders are:
Soupe, Houle, and Boily
Jumabekov
Didier
Demare
Torckler
Nardin
They are all chasing Firsanov. Cano clearly didn't have the strength today and bluffed the sprint so if this works it could be one of most bizarre but brilliant tactics to work in a bunch sprint.
But it doesn't work as the Canadian's Boily and Houle from Alstom-RBC storm into the lead. Could it be a magical 1-2 for the home fans? Trying to stop them are Torckler coming up the middle and Nardin and Didier coming on the right.
Torckler is coming fast. 600 meters left.
And Torckler to lead. Nardin is now challenging the Canadians for 2nd. But he can't take too long as Selander is coming out of nowhere to challenge for a podium! What an amazing ride by him.
It's a very close battle for 2nd.
But we have no doubt about the winner, it's Aussie Torckler. And when you add up the bonus seconds from the first stage, Torckler is your new leader by 4 seconds over Demare and Nardin.
2nd to Nardin over the surprise of the day Selander. With the home crowd favourites being split by a late charging Michael Vink for 4th and 6th.
Gazelle showing great team strength by snagging 7th with Mugerli and Westra slots into 8th showing promising form before his crucial two days in this tour.
In total 18 riders get dropped today with the most disappointing riders to be effected by the pace was the Italian sprinter Chicchi and Aguilar.
