The tour starts off with 157kms of flat roads but it's bit bumpy in a few places. Your favourites for day 1 and the first leader's jersey are Keough,
Chicchi, and Cano. But with a lot of talented sprinters here it's anybody's game.
A sprint point comes 7kms in, lets see who already has their legs warmed up.
It's pre-race favourite Keough out in front of Cano and Aguillar.
So much for the breakaway being a popular place as stated in the preview,
it takes 115kms to go before Barbari is the first brave soul to try an attack.
CRASH! Oh it's only Kopp. So, let's get back to the front of the race.
Turns out to be a one man breakaway today, meaning Barbari is not only guaranteed some great TV time but also the KoM jersey for tomorrow.
The next eventful thing to happen is at the last sprint point where Keough is the only sprinter in the peloton to challenge for the 2nd place after Barbari rode through to take first. Looks like the American is the only one willing to fight for the small points. We will have to wait and see if that hurts him at the finish.
Barbari is over the summit of the final categorized climb with a 3 minute lead with 42kms to go. But since he is by himself it looks impossible for him to hold on.
The peloton is under 20kms to go and Barbari is still fighting with a 1'20" lead.
Barbari is coming into the final 10kms with the 3 inclines before a downhill run in towards the finish. Will the up and down variation in the road be enough to fool to the peloton?
Just one climb left, his lead is down to 25 seconds.
And it's all over going up the last incline, and would you look at that BCR are already organized on the left with Firsanov pulling Cano into the lead.
Over the top it's a mad scramble to get on Cano's wheel as they are only 3kms away from the finish. Fighting for that position are:
Torckler
Keough
Koch
Nardin
Demare
Chicchi
Torckler makes the first move with Keough on his wheel as Cano still waits behind Firsanov. And these four have opened up a little gap on the rest. Those behind need a huge sprint to contest them now.
Cano might have waited to long as it's a bike length between him and Keough before he starts his sprint with 1.3kms to go.
Under the banner Cano is struggling to close down on Keough while Nardin and Demare on the right are charging towards the front. Also surprising to see
Reinhardt from AMEX doing well with all the other sprinters that are here. Same goes for Koch as he is ahead of Sram's lead sprinter Keisse with 1000 meters to go.
Torckler is starting to fade with 600 meters left, this leaves the door wide open for Keough, Demare, Nardin, or Cano to take the opening stage victory.
Cano is struggling to get going though and Keough is losing steam as well.
Making this a three way battle now between the fading Torckler against Demare and Nardin.
They are past Torcker so it's Demare vs. Nardin at the line for a photo finish!
What a finish! It's Demare by just a few centimeters!
He even gives a glance over to Nardin to acknowledge that close battle.
But victory is all his.
The rest of your top 5 is Torckler, Keough, and Cano. With Speirs, Boily, Horgan, Reinhardt, and Aguilar coming on strong late to squeeze into your top 10. The 3 small inclines before the finish really hindered many of the sprinters listed in the preview from getting a good position before the sprint started leaving them with a poor result on stage 1.
