Can't connect online with my friend, but eaily with everybody else

I bought this game for my friend and me, two different games so no trouble with the same key. However when we sit 20 km apart with each our computer, we can't play against each other, however if i try to get into anybody elses game, i jumps right in.
It says failure to connect to server, try again.

Help me?
