Stage 6 is the final chance for the sprinters in this year’s Tour de Suisse, as the three final days is two tough mountain stages and a team time trial. Just like the previous flat stages here in Switzerland, this one isn’t completely flat. Though, yesterday the road rised on the final kilometers, while today it’s downhill almost to the very finish line, somewhat similar to stage 3.
The first rider mentioned by the bookmakers for the stage win is actually
Boasson Hagen
after yesterday’s win. Except for him it’s the usual suspects thinking of a flat stage:
Degenkolb
Holloway
Van Heerden
No wind and a big sun greets the riders Witnau as they prepare for a 203 kilometers long ride to Bischofszell.
Vermeltfoort
is the only early attacker, and he quickly gets a gap of two minutes after only 10 kilometers.
Though, being lonely up front the whole day was probably too good to be true, and with 162 kilometers to go he is joined by
Stybar
Danacik
Kinney
Ghyselinck
Posthuma
That’s definitely a strong group of riders looking for breakaway glory today.
Danacik
is best placed in the general classification, sitting pretty in 36th, 10’02 behind the race leader.
Both
Vermeltfoort
Kinney
have mountain points from earlier efforts, but surprisingly none of them are interested in today’s first, as
Stybar
rolls over the top with 146 kilometers left first. Their gap back to the peloton is up to five minutes.
Back in the peloton it’s
Pokerstars.com
Simply Red Bull
Venchi-Sugoi
helping
Aker-MOT
setting the early pace. As they cross a bridge in this beautiful country 129 kilometers away from home they are six minutes behind the escapees.
Ghyselinck
rolls over the intermediate sprint with 97 kilometers to go first. The six riders up front co-operates well, now leading the peloton with no less than 6’30.
Though, the sprinter’s teams look determined to have another bunch sprint today, as
Venchi-Sugoi
Simply Red Bull
Pokerstars.com
cuts the breakaway’s advantage to 5’50 86 kilometers away from home.
Vermeltfoort
attacks for the mountain points on offer with 61 kilometers left. Though, he’s probably tired from yesterday’s effort, and sees
Danacik
sneak past on the final hundred meters. They now lead the peloton by 4’20 as they start on the relative hilly end to the stage.
The Dutch rider gets another chance with 49 kilometers to go, but this time he’s too late to pull the trigger!
Vermeltfoort
can only pick up four mountain points, as
Ghyselinck
steals the maximum six points from him. Their advantage back to the peloton is four minutes.
The escapees cross the finishing line for the penultimate time with 28 kilometers left. The gap back to the peloton is down to exactly two minutes, which probably means it will be tough for them to stay away.
Or maybe not!
Posthuma
leads them over the final categorized climb 22 kilometers away from home, and they still lead the peloton by 1’55!
But with 6.600 meters left the fun is over for the six breakaway riders.
Craven
catches them all, leading the peloton.
3.800 meters to go and the sprint trains get organized. Once again it’s Pokerstars.com in the lead, lining up
Rujano
Kluge
Degenkolb
Holloway
Boasson Hagen
hopes yesterday’s success following Holloway will repeat itself, as he’s glued to the American’s rear wheel.
On their right is
Van Heerden
Haedo
Howard
while Venchi-Sugoi try their best on the left with
Craven
Marinangeli
Van Avermaet
The sprint opens up with 2.100 meters to the finish, or at least the left train goes for it! It’s
Marinangeli
leading out
Van Avermaet
Boasson Hagen
Haedo
Howard
Grillo
Rodriguez Segarra
Croket
On the right it’s still
Kluge
at the front, ahead of
Degenkolb
Holloway
Van Heerden
Minard
1.3 kilometers to go and it’s a gap for
Van Avermaet!
Boasson Hagen
was blocked by
Marinangeli
when trying to follow, and the Belgian suddenly finds himself with a huge chance at a stage win, having no one at his rear wheel!
Degenkolb
Holloway
are still to launch their sprint, while
Haedo
on the left and
Minard
on the right desperately try to close the gap to the flying Belgian in front!
800 meters to go, and
Amador
comes from nowhere down the left, and storms past pretty much all the sprinters!
Also, finally
Holloway
has been able to launch his sprint, and he’s looking fast!
Haedo
Boasson Hagen
Minard
follow closest.
It’s the final corner with 400 meters left, and
Van Avermaet
is fading badly!
Amador
Boasson Hagen
Holloway
all sense the weakness from the Belgian, and they are giving it everything to pass him!
And just like yesterday,
Boasson Hagen
thunders into the lead on the final hundred meters! It’s only 200 meters left, and he’s looking set for a third win here in Switzerland.
Boasson Hagen
it is! He grabs another 20 bonus seconds, and extends his overall lead once more. What a tour this has proved to be for the Norwegian so far.
And just like yesterday, it’s an overall contender claiming second place.
Amador
was incredibly fast the last kilometer and is rewarded with second place and 12 bonus seconds, just ahead of
Holloway
who takes another third place.
Van Avermaet
Van Heerden
Pedraza
Denifl
Grivko
follow close.
Then comes another overall contender. It’s
Pluchkin
sprinting home for ninth ahead of
Monfort
in tenth.
