Hi guys,
I really would like to know more about the history of cycling and watch some old races as well. Is there any homepage that has old tours and classics or links in chronological order?
So I could start from let's say 1990 and work my way up to todays races. |

I'd go back a little bit earlier (but then I'm older and like to appreciate that era) to get a feel for things pre-EPO. Also, I'd start with books.
Slaying the Badger is a decent enough book. Takes a while to get going but covers two of cycling's biggest legends in Bernard Hinault and Greg Lemond (one of the few TdF winners of the last 30 years with a decent probability of being clean).
Rough Ride by Paul Kimmage also gets better as you go along. Very interesting look into the life of a pro.
After that, you are ready for the videos.

While the rough ride is a decent book and slaying the badger is excellent, it seems he's not interested in individual stories, he's interested in stories of how the actual racing went year on year.
I'd recommend some very good books for that (or webpages with the book's text on them available for free) but it seems he wants videos, so....go to cyclingtorrents.nl and download the WCP videos of the grand tours of the 90s and early 2000s. It's a very narrow period of time but it's nearly the only thing there is in terms of video.

You might want to give a shot at Ina.fr as well. I never/barely go there, but they're supposed to have stored the whole broadcasting of French public channels for... ever since it's existed. I've no idea which proportion of it is available for free viewing though.
Usually when they show old cycling footage on television, it has an INA watermark somewhere.
There you go :

thanks guys
had a look at the torrent site, but seems a bit complicated to download all the races I'd like to see (or just expensive...). Will have a look at the INA as well |

I'm only new here (posting, at least) but I presume it is ok for you to add a few links to those websites despite being slighty off-topic. I would certainly appreciate it (and possibly the OP too). |

If you're looking for old videos, why are you talking about HD?
Unless you consider "old" to be over a month?
EDIT: Meaning...HD is a very new thing. And then again, even today "HD" is not really high definition at all on a TV. My 2002 cellphone had better resolution per cm.

Thanks!
I stopped watching cycling in the Pantani/Armstrong years when I finally realised/accepted that there was something seriously broken in pro cycling. I'm only just getting back into it over the last few years (not that I think it is clean, just that even the UCI are under pressure these days) and these repositories may be useful for future references. |
