And with that Justo Tenorio is crowned the 2013 Vuelta champion! He was never outside the top 5 overall and he held the jersey since stage 5 – since then he only rarely looked under pressure. Second place Vincenzo Nibali and third place Alberto Contador each managed to pile the pressure on once or twice but Tenorio reacted calmly the whole time.

Going into the race it looked almost certain that Santander would win this classification but the huge number of successful breaks meant that other teams could make up a lot of time on them. Thus Pearl Adidas overtook them on stage 19. It took the split on the flat stage 21 to ensure that Santander actually did win here.
