Vuelta a Espana - Stage 19
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-1.jpg

The last 4 categorised climbs of the race are finally here on the 122km stage 19! We have the category 2 Alto de El Cordal to start us off, the three category 1 climbs – the Alto de la Cobertoria, the Puerto de San Lorenzo and finally the Puerto de Somiendo which peaks 11km before the finish, 9km of which is a descent. There is a total of 42km of climbing, so let’s get straight into it!

It is appropriate that the first attack of the day comes from i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Wilco Kelderman. He has already been in four breaks so far this race and thus is someone who has truly kept things interesting. He will also be looking to add to his 32 mountain points to get some more ranking points for his team.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-2.jpg

Remarkably he is joined by five riders and everyone seems happy with this first attack, giving us an instant break of the day consisting of the i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman and the following five riders:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Jocelin Maillet (58 mtn points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Damniao Caruso (26 mtn points)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Darwin Atapuma (6 mtn points)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Woet Poels
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Amael Moinard

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-3.jpg

Interestingly i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet is the only person who can possible stop i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald from winning the mountain jersey, but he has to win every single summit to do it.

The relatively easy Alto de El Cordal is the first up and the break concentrate on expanding their gap. But i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet does not attack at the top! Clearly he is just looking to save his energy for a potential stage win, which would grant him even more ranking points than the difference between first and second in the mountain competition. Still, his manager may not be pleased with that choice. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Poels takes his first 10 points here.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-4.jpg

The second climb of the day is the Alto de la Cobertoria. It is a tough climb which is consistently around the 8% mark without any huge spikes in gradient. The gap between the two groups is at 6’05” and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet does the work most of the way up in the break, that is until we reach the summit. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Atapuma rolls over in first ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Poels and then i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet. He really just doesn’t care about that jersey, though he is basically guaranteed second place at this point.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-5.jpg

Back in the pack a lot of riders are hurting but Santander aren’t going to raise the pace just too high yet. As such with 1.5km still to go to the summit, and just over 80km to the finish line, some well-placed riders take matters into their own hands. The following riders attack:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Robin van der Hugenhaben (19th)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Martin Hacecky (20th)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png David De la Fuente (22nd)

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-6.jpg

Remarkably by the summit they have pulled out 1’37” on the bunch, but they are still another 8’50” down on the break, who could well be looking at yet another win. The only matter of interest on the decent is that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Teklehaimanot falls.

As i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet leads though the sprint point with 64km remaining, the break’s gap over the attackers is holding at about 8’32”, but those riders now have 3’08” on the peloton, making them a dangerous group. Remember that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Van der Hugenhaben is only 9’59” down on GC.

Perhaps sensing that some of the lower GC positions are under threat here i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Heineken and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Venchi both start working and help i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Santander to set the pace. In fact the gap soon gets to the point where these riders would enter the top ten and so i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars start working too to defend i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano’s tenth place.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-7.jpg

Next up we have the immensely tough Puerto de San Lorenzo. This is arguably the toughest climb in the entire race, with some sections holding above 11% for over a kilometre, with the climb averaging around the 9% mark.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-8.jpg

Now the pace in the peloton is a bit more serious. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Santander start to set a more difficult pace and we get out first riders dropped – 54 of them in one go!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-9.jpg

Up front they are far enough ahead that they reach the summit with the peloton still at a mid-way point. And remarkably as Moinard crests first i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Van der Hugenhaben, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Hacecky and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png De la Fuente are just behind them! Also the weather has started to turn a bit sour and rain is threatening.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-10.jpg

And over the top in the pack we get some real drama as the bunch splits! Only 66 riders make the first cut and several well-placed riders are in the second group now! Missing the cut are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Daniel Martin (9th)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Ryan Eastman (16th)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Dominique Nerz (26th)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Mwangi Samwel (29th)

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Eastman is the closest to the front of this group and he sets the pace to try to defend his borrowed white jersey as the best non-Tenorio youth rider. He has another 26 men around him, but not too many domestiques.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-11.jpg

Up front the chasers catch the break and join them as the descent to our final climb ends. The lead is still out to 10’39” and so in fact i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Robin van der Hugenhaben is the provisional leader of the Vuelta a Espana!

The final climb of this entire race, the Puerto de Somiendo, is longer than it is hard. It averages around 6% and hasn’t got any really steep sections except for one 9% section near the base. Then, as said, there is an 11km descent to the finish line. Before this climb can even start it is clear that there are some tired legs and that the pace is really high – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Santander drop another 14 riders. We are now down to 49 riders.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-12.jpg

The gap between the two pelotons is now at 2 minutes and some are keen to push on, particularly with 9th place i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Martin still behind (and it is worth remembering that his team had a top 10 as a race goal). They still have to narrow the gap to the break, however, who are still 9’14” ahead. This means that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio is back to provisional leader but several of those riders could move into the top 10.

As we hit the little foothill before the climb it is clear that things aren’t slowing down! In fact we get our first major favourites attacking! i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Machado is the first to launch. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricco and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano follow him! Just to add to the tension the rain is now belting down.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-13.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck is the next to bridge up and he is keen to push this on, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Valls puts in a strong effort to bring all four riders back.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-14.jpg

We hit the base of the climb and straight away it is the steepest part of the climb. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck is clearly feeling good as he launches another attack!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-15.jpg

He gets a 40” gap and already the peloton is shredded down to just 29 riders. Sensing a real opportunity here i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Uran and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricco try to bridge up to him.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-16.jpg

This time it is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Machado who shuts these three down but he doesn’t want to keep everything calm. He jumps onto the back wheel of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricco, who launches another bridging attempt to get up to i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck! These three now have a 24” gap on the peloton, which has only 22 riders now!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-17.jpg

Up front, meanwhile, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Van der Hugenhaben is doing a lot of the pace-setting, clearly wanting to keep a top ten place. This causes i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso to drop out of the break.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-18.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Denifl is under pressure here to defend his position against i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck. He tries to bridge up but he can’t quite make it and sits in no-man’s land.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-19.jpg

The peloton behind him, meanwhile is down to just 13 riders:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio, Valls, Lopez Garcia
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Contador
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Uran
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Schwab
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Panayotov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Plaza
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Guldhammer

25th overall i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Schwab is putting in a huge ride here! But that list means that 11th overall i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sanchez has been dropped! He could be overtaken by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Plaza, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Valls and possibly even i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte here! He looks unhappy as he tries to claw some time back.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-20.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Denifl manages to get up to the three other attackers but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio claws the group back just as this happens.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-21.jpg

Up front there are only 5 riders left. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Van der Hugenhaben, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Hacecky and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png De la Fuente are all still here and riding into better GC positions while i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Poels are here just to compete for the stage win.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-22.jpg

For some reason i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Van der Hugenhaben attacks for the mountain points while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png De la Fuente and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Hacecky follow him. They sit up over the top and let the other two rejoin to help work with them.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-23.jpg

With 1km of climbing left in this race i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano rolls the dice as the snow falls mixed with the rain. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali jumps on his back wheel with the first sign of life for this stage and then i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Uran is just behind them.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-24.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Machado controls this movement, not wanting i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Uran to get away and threaten his fourth place.

But with 500 metres to the summit i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali now really goes for it, bringing i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Uran along with him. He gets a decent gap!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-25.jpg

These two go over the top 5’52” down on the break and then the next group is about 40” behind them... and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio isn’t here! That’s right a group has got a gap on the race leader in the final 500 metres of climbing in this race! The people here are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricco
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Denifl
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Contador
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Machado

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-26.jpg

Another 20” later and the next two riders cross – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Plaza and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio isn’t here either!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-27.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio now crosses the line just behind these two with the handful of riders who hadn’t attacked away. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali puts his descending skills to good use! He starts the day 1’12” down on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio, but what are the time gaps?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-28.jpg

With 9km to go here are the gaps:
31"8"25"15"
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali--->i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Machado--->i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricco--->i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Plaza--->Gr. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Denifl
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano

That’s 1’19”, so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali is the provisional leader by the slimmest of margins! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Santander lost the Giro by bare seconds, is the same thing about to happen?

Some good news for one team as it looks like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Daniel Martin has managed to claw his way back on to the group of the current race leader! What a great climb by him. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio manages to bring back i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Plaza and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte now. He has to pull out a career-defining performance here.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-29.jpg

The dropped i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman are now caught by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Uran (or more correctly, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali catches them). Not only that but i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Machado descends like an absolute madman in the wet to catch the back of this group too.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-30.jpg

The decent starts to flatten out a bit and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali is trying to push on without any help from the others here. With 5km to go we get another time check:

27”21”
Gr. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali--->Gr. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Contador--->Gr. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio has put in a huge effort here and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali is no longer provisional leader.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-31.jpg

The break come to the banner and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Van der Hugenhaben, who has been doing a lot of the pacing, leads out the group. Their lead is close to 5 minutes.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-32.jpg

And remarkably i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Robin van der Hugenhaben holds on for a well-deserved stage win! That’s his second win of the race, as he also took stage 9 from a break. The 20 bonus seconds are going to come in handy too as he could well be moving a fair way up the standings. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Hacecky takes second with the other mid-stage attacker i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png De la Fuente in third. Both of them will also move up nicely tonight. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Poels are 4th and 5th respectively, while the dropped i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Moinard and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Atapuma take 6th and 7th a couple of minutes later.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-33.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali is clearly struggling much more on the flat compared to the descent and so his group is caught by the group of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Contador. The group of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio is still about 25” behind.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-34.jpg

With i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio at about 25” the gap starts growing again... i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali has launched his sprint and instantly gets several bike lengths on everyone else!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-35.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio catches the group of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali... or at least the one where he used to be, as he now has a solid gap with under a kilometre left!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-36.jpg

And the Italian crosses the line for 8th, 4’29” down on today’s winner. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Contador is behind him and rather cruelly the race officials declare that there will be no gaps in this entire group today, so everyone from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali in 8th to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Valls in 25th will get the same time. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio’s crisis is over and his manager can take a deep breath again.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-37.jpg

We get 5 riders withdrawing today, reducing us to 184. Sadly it seems that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Teklehaimanot’s fall seriously hurt him so he couldn’t make it to the end. Also worth noting that i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Merino Criado and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Vanderaerden would have been at least competitive for a top ten in the final two stages.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V19-38.jpg

So let’s have a look at the GC. It looked like we were going to get a huge shake-up when the riders crested that final summit, but in the end the top 8 riders remain the same and moving into ninth is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Van der Hugenhaben, which will surely go down as one of the least expected GT results this year. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Hackecky moves from 20th to 14th, another big surprise, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png De la Fuente moves up to 17th. There were numerous losers today; most of them were the riders who missed that initial third of the peloton that went on to contest the overall. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Guldhammer put in a solid individual chase on the descent to only lose one spot to 19th. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Eastman, on the other hand, plummets from 16th to 21st. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sanchez, who couldn’t keep up on the final climb, goes from 11th down to 15th, which is unfortunate for him.

Now as for the other jerseys the fight for the points jersey is still very much alive! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio’s team not pulling back breaks means that i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway is only 29 points behind him – definitely a closable gap with the two flat stages that follow. With no mountain points left to award i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald is confirmed as our mountain jersey winner, assuming he finishes. Finally, in the team classification, thanks largely to i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet being in the break, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Pearl Adidas have moved into the lead in the competition by just 49 seconds.
