The decisive mountain stage has arrived and Jose Serpa will look to continue Evian's Napolitano-led dominance. Nazaret will be a strong challenge, while others will hope to spring a surprise.
A breakaway went clear early, and would battle out the first climb of the day. Schelling beat Dyrnes, Meier and Diaz Corrales over the summit.
10 points for Schelling is no danger to the lead of Fonte, but with 20 points on offer at the finish today, it is almost certain that the stage winner will win the King of the Mountains jersey overall in this race.
Also in the breakaway group are Mayo, Mundle, Loosli and Jang.
The JK Cycling rider won both intermediate sprints, with Dyrnes taking 2nd in each - making it a trio of runner up spots for the Norwegian.
But that is it for the breakaway. They are caught surprisingly early, with 41km still to go - even before the start of the proper climbing on the stage. Evian have chased them down.
Yeung opens up attacks as the climb begins, and is joined by Masuda, Izagirre, Bongiorno and Hesjedal.
Together they hold a 30-40 second lead, which holds steady for the next few kilometres.
Not that the peloton are going slow. It is reduced to just 35, and race leader Napolitano is amongst those gone. It seems like his whole team are waiting for him...
Serpa however, has remained in the peloton.
After 10 km clear, the Yeung/Masuda/Izagirre/Bongiorno/Hesjedal group is caught - largely thanks to the relaying of Devolder. Are Pivovarna Lasko riding for Der after the Serbian's time gained on Stage 2? With the group caught, there is a slowing, and the peloton expands once again.
Gadret sat on Devolder's wheel in the chase, and now goes on the attack.
Bongiorno, Izagirre and Hesjedal made to follow him, as did Girdlestone and Grygorenko.
But when a gap forms, it is neither of these infront. Instead it is Jose Serpa!
Further attacks from Dyachenko, Gadret, Castano, Briceno, Zeits and Girdlestone cancelled out this attack though.
And with the first part of the 2-pronged climb over, and now 20km to go, Devolder leads a 36 man peloton down the short descent, supported by Hasanovic.
At 16km to go the climbing returns, and immediately Osella attacked, creating a small gap.
That counts for nothing when Castano storms past him!
Feillu tried to follow but could not, and the determined Castano opens up a 24 second gap with 10km to go. The GC may be out of reach thanks to his puncture, but the stage win is not!
Under the 10km banner the two big stage favourites attack: Nazaret and Serpa! But only Nazaret is able to bridge to Castano.
Could this be the winning move? Apparantely not, as Ji chases it down. The Chinese rider must be feeling strong today then.
We are still a large group into the final 5km as Soler and Kessiakoff make their move! Hesjedal tried to go with them, but that was a foolish move by the Canadian and he cannot keep up.
This time the Meiji rider to chase it down is Shimizu. But it causes a split in the group - a gap for the front 14 riders.
John Gadret
Aleksandr Dyachenko
José Serpa
Carlos Castaño
Jianhua Ji
Miyataka Shimizu
Ryder Hesjedal
Stijn Devolder
Zsolt Der
Jimmi Briceno
Mauricio Soler
Magno Nazaret
Ricardo Mestre
Fredrik Kessiakoff
The pace remains high, and soon Dyachenko, Der, Devolder and Hesjedal are dropped.
Disappointment for Pivovarna Lasko who opted to back Der, but as he struggles, it is too late for Devolder to step up. The 2nd overall Der could still be a danger to those ahead if he remains within 42 seconds though.
Nazaret looks to go for the kill, but Ji is right there with him.
There is no gap as Shimizu rides the group back up to his teammates wheel. Meiji-Cannondale are certainly riding strong today, on Asian soil once again, but the critical part of the stage is still to come with the final kilometre about to move into view.
Nazaret is confident in himself and stays on the front, pushing his rhythym out. His expected main rival Serpa is not ideally positioned - perhaps not having the greatest of days?
The Brazilian Nazaret leads into the final kilometre and opens the sprint. But Meiji are all over him!
Jianhua Ji storms into the lead! He rode a great Tour of Japan and that form is evidently still here.
Serpa has found his legs in the sprint and moves up past Soler and Shimizu, towards the front.
But look at Ji fly! Meiji have never taken an overall victory in a race before ...
... but now they are going to be very close to doing so. Jianhua Ji wins the stage, uniting Japan and China in celebrations!
Serpa looked set to take 2nd - rueing his poor positional skills that could have helped him challenge for the win - but Nazaret fights back to secure that 2nd place in both stage and overall. They are timed at 14 seconds behind Ji!
Shimizu takes 4th in a famous day for Meiji, 21 seconds behind his teammate. He beats Soler, a slightly disappointing Castano, and Gadret who is lucky to be awarded the same time as them.
Blown away in the final kilometre, Kessiakoff, Mestre and Briceno finish 51 seconds behind. Positions 8-10 on the stage, but that will be 7-9 in GC.
Dyachenko leads in Der, Devolder and Hesjedal at 1'55. Too much of a loss for Der to do any better than 10th overall.
Next home was an 11 man group, who finish at 3'03 behind Ji. Three U25 riders are in here: Girdlestone, Grygorenko and Shikai. Based on previous stage consistency, Armavia's South African is the man who now leads the U25 competition.
By finishing 2'42 behind Castano, the riders in this group have just done enough - by 13 seconds - to remain ahead of the ING rider overall. A further blow for the Spaniard, who will only take 25th in GC.
