Vuelta a Espana - Stage 10
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-1.jpg

Today’s 152km stage is another one of those intermediate lumpy stages that look good for either a breakaway or for sprinters with some climbing legs. The break have won three stages in a row now, so it seems likely that the sprinting teams will want to shut things down and ensure that they can fight for the stage win.

Our first attack today comes from a man who has already made himself known several times in this race – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Joost Posthuma. His breakaway efforts on stage 4 failed to regain him the leader’s jersey but now he is clearly just fighting for another stage win.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-2.jpg

He forms up a break with three other riders:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Philip Deignan
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Damiano Caruso (stage winner)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Jose Mendes (mountain jersey)

These three establish a decent lead but with all the success that the breaks have been having lots of other riders look to bridge across:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Nathan Haas
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Pim Ligthart
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Anthony Roux
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Matea Kvasina
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Jocelyn Bar
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Vegard Robinson Bugge (2nd mountain classification)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Evgeni Sokolov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Chris Froome
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Peter Sagan
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Amael Moinard
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Jetse Bol
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Dimitri Grabovski

Of these riders only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Amael Moinard can join up with the four leaders and he bridges up just as the first climb is starting.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-3.jpg

Just as this happens, however, there is a disaster for Simply Red Bull as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Michael Van Stayen comes off his bike! All of the team except for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Moinard and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Facci go back to get him, but he does not look good. He was considered one of the favourites for today’s stage and already has a stage win to his name in this race.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-4.jpg

Perhaps unsurprisingly i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes is the first to show an interest in the mountain points and he puts in an attack. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Posthuma also show some interest and look to come up to him.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-5.jpg

These two get up to his back wheel but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes attacks again closer to the summit. This time he isn’t followed so he easily takes the six points, which gives him the sole lead in that competition. His team’s sponsors must surely be pleased! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso then i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Posthuma roll over for second and third. They have a minute’s lead over the pack behind, and then i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen’s group is another 4 minutes behind!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-6.jpg

Witht eh gap at only a minute, there are more attacks from the bunch. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Anthony Roux gets a gap and bridges across.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-7.jpg

Up front with the gap at about 40”, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Posthuma puts in a solo attack to try to force a much bigger gap. Is he willing to commit to a solo breakaway today?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-8.jpg

Amidst several other attacks out of the bunch, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Alex Dowsett is able to force his way up to the bunch. The gap is still small but he injects some pact and they catch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Posthuma. Just as the catch is made the British champion attacks away on his own.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-9.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso attacks up to him as well, leaving the others to be taken in by the bunch. Under the first intermediate sprint, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Dowsett rolls over in first with a 40” gap. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen is now 5 minutes back. There is an attack out of the peloton as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Nathan Haas looks to bridge up and he manages that. So with that we have a 3 man group up front and everyone is happy with it. So our break of the day is:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Alex Dowsett
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Damiano Caruso
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Nathan Haas

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-10.jpg

Now the pack sit up a bit and luckily for one team, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen is allowed to re-enter the peloton. Will he be too injured to compete in the sprint though? Speaking of the peloton they allow the gap to grow to a maximum of 4’30” before they start to clamp down on it. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars are the primary protagonists here.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-11.jpg

As the final climb starts the gap is at 2’32” and dropping but these are all great puncheurs up front so by the time they reach the top the gap is still at 2’13”. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Dowsett goes over first and is followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Haas then i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso. We now have a 23km descent so things are a bit touch-and-go from here!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-12.jpg

All the sprinters are still in the bunch as we go over the top but as the descent starts, it is clear that some legs are hurting. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Michael Vanderaerden drops backwards and most of his team head back to try to bring him up to the bunch.

But this isn’t the most interesting thing on the climb. One of the GC riders is down... i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Alejandro Valverde! He is sitting 4th overall and is in the points jersey.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-13.jpg

He gets back up and his teammate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Johansson has dropped back to provide support. The i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto riders aren’t going to be helping him. But this could be tough because i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars are all pushing on, because they really want to fight for this stage win.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-14.jpg

With 10km to go it is mostly i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars applying the pressure. The gap to the leaders is down to 55”. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde has dropped 3 minutes behind!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-15.jpg

With 5km to go i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Terpstra makes the catch and it looks like we are going to get a bunch sprint after all.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-16.jpg

With 3.5km to go we have our only lead-out train of the day. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina tried to set one up but couldn’t sustain it. Still they have left i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao in a decent position. The train is:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dumoulin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Degenkolb
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Merino Criado
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Matthews are both to their right, up against the barriers, and are looking for a way on to this train.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-17.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss muscles i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao off i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey’s wheel and is now fifth in the sprint train with 2.7km remaining.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-18.jpg

With 1.7km to go i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao is forced to go for a long sprint. The rest of the train moves on to his back wheel, leaving i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey behind him and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss in third position on this new train. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dumoulin comes off and now i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Degenkolb is leading out i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-19.jpg

Under the kite i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Degenkolb pulls out a lead over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao, setting i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway up perfectly.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-20.jpg

With 700 metres to go, everyone has come around i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey moving the fastest. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway is still taking his lead-out.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-21.jpg

With 400 metres remaining i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway finally launches himself, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Merino Criado are coming up fast!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-22.jpg

With 200 metres to go i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey is just ahead as Holloway and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Merino Criado are half a length behind both coming quickly.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-23.jpg

And i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Daryl Impey just holds on for the biggest win of his career!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V10-24.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Merino Criado is half a length behind for second, with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway in third after a perfect lead-out. Speaking of lead-outs i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Degenkolb holds on for fourth. Maybe he just was going too well today and actually ended up hurting his leader? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera is in fifth, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss takes a disappointing sixth then i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bibby, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png van der Hugenhaben, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Grabovski round out a surprising top ten. Clearly a lot of the sprinters were hurt quite badly by today’s climbing and will have to make up for it tomorrow.

But the biggest loser today is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde, who comes in 5’52” down on the pack today. This drops him from 4th overall to 21st. Not only that but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio takes over the lead in the points jersey as well thanks to his top 10 finish today.
