Stage 2 features the first significant climbing of the race - will the hills be able to force a gap? There's an absence in the field of the division's strong puncheurs, with the best hill stat being 75 - but there are 7 riders with this stat, so it could be an entertaining finish! They are Acevedo, Der, Durasek, Ji, Pakthusov, Pineau and Zeits.
Five riders got into the breakaway: Sutherland, Bespalov, Dyrnes, De Bie and Mundle.
They had to watch out for the overhead power lines on the Category 2 climb though, raise your head too high there and you risk electrocution!
Sutherland won the battle for points at the top, a key victory in the battle for the first KoM jersey of the race.
Evian took responsibility for the race lead today, and were amongst those to help out with the chasing. For a period of time, the peloton rode parallel to a random, sinister looking, wall. What secrets does the Iranian government hide behind it?
Bespalov and Dyrnes each won an intermediate sprint, while the group's lead is quite small leading onto the Cat 3 climb towards the end of the stage.
Many of the sprinters have already decided they cannot be bothered today, and dropped of the back of the peloton. Surprisingly including the feared hill slayer Hoffman!
A quite amusing sequence started to happen at the back of the peloton as they started the climb. Riders would drop back to collect water bottles for their teammates, and get dropped. So their teams would send another rider back ... who then got dropped as well!
At the front of the peloton, attacks were already beginning.
Masuda, Acevedo, Grygorenko, Pakthusov, Bono, Golas, Blazquez and Vorganov.
They couldn't get a gap, but they did caught the breakaway. Russian champion Vorganov made a 2nd move, followed by a few others who had attacked before, as well as Yeung.
No gaps have formed as they approach the summit, and there's trouble afoot as ING team leader Castano punctures!
Masuda takes the points at the top, followed by Rutkiewicz and Blazquez.
Splits in the peloton over the top due to dropped riders did not favour Castano, and once he had got going on his new bike, he found himself gapped by the peloton. Teammates drop back to help.
There's no waiting in the peloton. Blazquez, Vorganov, Yeung and Golas try another move, this time joined by Seo.
That doesnt work, but Vorganov keeps at it and a move launched with 5km to go creates small gap. Golas, Yeung and Acevedo are with him.
Pineau and Der are the next to make a move.
Durasek, Izagirre and Ji try to follow.
Vorganov and Golas have dropped back, and Napolitano is still riding well, while Bintang lead the peloton.
Pineau is really pressing on at the front.
The Frenchman is riding well clear of the peloton, with others in pursuit. Others are still trying to attack away here, but aren't having as much luck. Feillu and Nazaret amongst them.
Durasek and Der are together, chasing after Pineau, while Izagirre lies 4th.
For the 2nd stage in a row, Pineau has a gap going into the final kilometre - but Der has bolted away from Durasek and closed the gap.
Zsolt Der keeps going, and the Serbian wins the stage!
2nd for Pineau, and a lucky Durasek takes 3rd and is awarded the same time as the front 2. Pineau will move into the Points jersey lead after a very aggressive opening to the race has yielded a 4th and a 2nd.
Izagirre is 4th, but does receive a 22 second gap to the lead 3. And that is the gap the peloton will have.
Ji is perhaps a frustrated 5th as time gained here could really have helped him for GC, Feillu takes 6th, Nazaret 7th and Shimizu 8th.
JK Cycling rider Seo takes the U25 jersey thanks to time bonuses achieved on Stage 1.
An angry Carlos Castano will finish 68th. He has lost 3'17 today, a major blow.
