Azerbaijan Tour - Stage 2
SportingNonsense
Stage 2 features the first significant climbing of the race - will the hills be able to force a gap? There's an absence in the field of the division's strong puncheurs, with the best hill stat being 75 - but there are 7 riders with this stat, so it could be an entertaining finish! They are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Acevedo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Der, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Durasek, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Ji, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Pakthusov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Pineau and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Zeits.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-1.jpg

Five riders got into the breakaway: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Sutherland, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png Bespalov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Dyrnes, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png De Bie and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Mundle.

They had to watch out for the overhead power lines on the Category 2 climb though, raise your head too high there and you risk electrocution!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-2.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Sutherland won the battle for points at the top, a key victory in the battle for the first KoM jersey of the race.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-3.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Evian took responsibility for the race lead today, and were amongst those to help out with the chasing. For a period of time, the peloton rode parallel to a random, sinister looking, wall. What secrets does the Iranian government hide behind it?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-4.jpg

Bespalov and Dyrnes each won an intermediate sprint, while the group's lead is quite small leading onto the Cat 3 climb towards the end of the stage.

Many of the sprinters have already decided they cannot be bothered today, and dropped of the back of the peloton. Surprisingly including the feared hill slayer i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Hoffman!

A quite amusing sequence started to happen at the back of the peloton as they started the climb. Riders would drop back to collect water bottles for their teammates, and get dropped. So their teams would send another rider back ... who then got dropped as well!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-5.jpg

At the front of the peloton, attacks were already beginning.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Masuda, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Acevedo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Grygorenko, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Pakthusov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Bono, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cre_zps8fb855ae.png Golas, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Blazquez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Vorganov.

They couldn't get a gap, but they did caught the breakaway. Russian champion Vorganov made a 2nd move, followed by a few others who had attacked before, as well as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Yeung.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-6.jpg

No gaps have formed as they approach the summit, and there's trouble afoot as ING team leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano punctures!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Masuda takes the points at the top, followed by Rutkiewicz and Blazquez.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-8.jpg

Splits in the peloton over the top due to dropped riders did not favour i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Castano, and once he had got going on his new bike, he found himself gapped by the peloton. Teammates drop back to help.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-9.jpg

There's no waiting in the peloton. Blazquez, Vorganov, Yeung and Golas try another move, this time joined by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Seo.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-10.jpg

That doesnt work, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Vorganov keeps at it and a move launched with 5km to go creates small gap. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cre_zps8fb855ae.png Golas, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Yeung and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Acevedo are with him.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Pineau and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Der are the next to make a move.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-11.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Durasek, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png Izagirre and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Ji try to follow.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-12.jpg

Vorganov and Golas have dropped back, and Napolitano is still riding well, while Bintang lead the peloton.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Pineau is really pressing on at the front.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-13.jpg

The Frenchman is riding well clear of the peloton, with others in pursuit. Others are still trying to attack away here, but aren't having as much luck. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Feillu and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Nazaret amongst them.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-14.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Durasek and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Der are together, chasing after Pineau, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png Izagirre lies 4th.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-15.jpg

For the 2nd stage in a row, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Pineau has a gap going into the final kilometre - but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Der has bolted away from Durasek and closed the gap.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-16.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Zsolt Der keeps going, and the Serbian wins the stage!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-17.jpg

2nd for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Pineau, and a lucky i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Durasek takes 3rd and is awarded the same time as the front 2. Pineau will move into the Points jersey lead after a very aggressive opening to the race has yielded a 4th and a 2nd.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.png Izagirre is 4th, but does receive a 22 second gap to the lead 3. And that is the gap the peloton will have.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/az2-18.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Ji is perhaps a frustrated 5th as time gained here could really have helped him for GC, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Feillu takes 6th, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Nazaret 7th and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Shimizu 8th.

JK Cycling rider i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Seo takes the U25 jersey thanks to time bonuses achieved on Stage 1.

An angry i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Carlos Castano will finish 68th. He has lost 3'17 today, a major blow.
