The Azerbaijan Tour, in Iran, opens up with a flat stage. Sprint finish is expected. Napolitano is a clear favourite, but there are a lot of strong sprinters here to challenge him.
4 man breakaway: Hoelgaard, Hugentobler, Schelling, Seo.
An impressively long bridge was part of the route today.
With windy conditions throughout the stage, the bridge was dangerously narrow. Fortunately, no splits occured.
Hoelgaard edged out Seo for both intermediate sprints, and the break made it into the final 10km before being caught. ING did some chasing, as did Pivovarna Lasko - surprisingly including one of their sprinters Bozic in the work.
WWE hit the front in a messy build up to the sprint. Kessiakoff, Pineau and Vingerling.
Napolitano has grabbed the perfect wheel, followed by Soupe and Polivoda.
Van Poppel, Bazajev, Hoffman, Hutarovich, Anton Martin, Modolo, Gatto, Tzortzakis, Andriato and Sutton are all battling for position behind them.
Pineau opens the sprint, and Vingerling lets him go! The Dutchman apparantely not up for the finish today, and trying to help his teammate.
Things are stretched out behind, which suits Napolitano, who launches his chase with just over a kilometre to go, and all his rivals behind him.
The Italian takes the lead but Soupe is right on him, and looking strong. Hoffman and Bazajev are chasing after them.
It's a 2 horse race for victory though - can Soupe overhaul Napolitano?
No he can't, it is victory for Danilo Napolitano. The favourite delivers.
Soupe must be content with a great ride to 2nd, while the ever present Hoffman completes the podium.
Pineau actually hung on for 4th, beating Bazajev, Anton Martin, Van Poppel and Hutarovich.
And Vingerling? All the way down in 23rd!
