Two flat stages down and one to go. Any sprinter with the ambition of trying to hold on to a decent GC position through the TT and the hilly stage will be desperate to snatch some more bonus seconds today.
Probably due to the stage not even including intermediate sprints, the interest for joining the long breakaway is very low.
The three riders who eventually establish an advantage have all been seen on the attack earlier: Rovira, Veyt and Kaupas.
The trio establishes a maximum advantage of nearly 8 minutes, but Die Berg make sure to start reducing it early, already around 100 km from the finish by having Kochetkov and Giogieri set the pace.
After stabilising at roughly three minutes for a while, the last chunk of time is rapidly eaten up by the peloton when Sauber and Allianz comes to Die Berg's assistance inside the last 15 km.
The catch is thus made with 8 km left to race.
Soon afterwards, the trains come to the fore - once again with Allianz appearing to be the strongest one. Interestingly, only Sauber challenges, while Die Berg has left Abakoumov on Dekkers' wheel rather than forming a train of their own - perhaps due to the last two days' failures.
Behind Abakoumov is Renshaw, while Saramotins and Belletti choose Sauber's train.
Almost simultaneously at the 2 km-mark, Havik and Haidar Anuwar opens the sprint for their leaders.
However, while Dekkers remains glued onto his team mate's back wheel, Awang struggles to match his!
It's a tactical disaster for Sauber. Haidar Anuwar doesn't seem to realise that Awang has lost his wheel and continues to push, forcing his leader to dig deep to close the gap.
On the other side of the road, Dekkers makes his move just as they enter the final kilometer.
The Dutchman quickly goes past a still sprinting Haidar Anuwar and into the lead, but Abakoumov and Saramotins are both coming up quickly.
Awang, on the other hand, struggles to click in an extra gear to accelerate.
As the line comes into view with 400m to go, Abakoumov jumps up alongside Dekkers, while the rest seem to be too far back.
After getting a perfect leadout from Dekkers, it is Abakoumov who wins!
Behind him, Renshaw comes past Dekkers for 2nd with a brilliant acceleration from third position in the final metres. Belletti and Saramotins are 4th and 5th, meaning that the latter will ride in the points jersey tomorrow as well - sitting 2nd in that competition behind Abakoumov.
The peloton stayed relatively intact all the way in, but notably dropped in the end is Flens. The three minutes lost here certainly ends all aspirations he might've had for the overall. All in for tomorrow now.
Abakoumov obviously retains the race lead, now with Dekkers 20 seconds back and Da Dalto at 28.
The GC contenders and timetriallists are 48 seconds down, which shouldn't be enough for Abakoumov to stay in the red jersey after tomorrow.
