So as a bit of an innovation in modern day Grand Tours, the key time trial is early in the race. This is likely to force the climbers to attack as soon as we hit the mountains (that is to say, tomorrow). Today’s course is 43.2km in length and almost entirely flat, with just a small climb between the two time checks. The first check is after 15km and the second is after 34km.
There are a lot of time trialists who set off early. We are going to have to cover them first as they vie for a potential stage win or at least a strong placing, and then we will have to watch the GC shake-up towards the end of the stage. There are some early times which are quite good. The early leader is Freddy Johansson with a time of 1h01’04”. The even better time trialists follow soon after. Sten Stenersen is just such a rider. He sets new best times at the first two checks – 21’31” and 48’02”.
And his final time is a new best of 1h00’57”. This is clearly a great time so it looks like any effort under 61 minutes is going to be competitive. This is clearly a strong time, as Michael Faerk Christensen, his teammate and a better time trialist on paper, comes in just one second slower, making it two B&O riders on the early provisional podium.
The next strong time trialists out on course is the young Frenchman Mathieu Bernaudeau. He really doesn’t like hills but over this sort of terrain he is fantastic. His first time is lacking somewhat, however, as he goes through in 21’36” which is 5” slower than our current leader. A fantastic second leg of the course really helps him, however, and he brings that time back, turning it into a 4” lead at the second check. Will he hold this to the finish?
He does indeed and we have our new best time of 1h00’49”. It looks like the 1 hour mark will be out of reach of almost anybody here, so Bernaudeau can be pleased with his ride.
Two more outside favourites for today now go through the finishing line. Maciej Bodnar is just 2” slower than Bernaudeau and so too is Javier Aramendía. The Spaniard trailed the Polish rider at each of the time checks but just beats him by a fraction of a second to move onto the second step of the podium. That also knocks the two B&O riders off.
So from Aramendia in 128th place we have to wait until the 78th overall Fabio Duarte comes through for anything notable to happen. The Colombian has had a fairly dismal race thus far and will be hoping to make some time back here. Certainly with the mountains coming up he may be able to get some time back and continue aiming for the top 15-20. His time at the first check shows his seriousness as he goes through in a new best of 21’27”, beating Stenersen’s previous best by 4”. He in fact loses a lot of time across the middle section as he goes through in 48’05”, 7” behind our stage leader Bernaudeau.
This trend doesn’t stop as he finishes in 1h00’59”. Certainly that’s a respectable time and he will undoubtedly move up on GC tonight but after that start he looked like he was capable of so much more.
Just 5 riders after Duarte, sitting in 73rd place thanks to some unnecessary time loss on the hills is Jose Rujano. This could be a tough day for him, given that he was 52nd in the prologue, which actually suited him a bit more. Regardless, he needs to perform today if he wants to keep a top 10 overall in sight. His time through the first check isn’t going to set the world on fire, but 21’46” is a solid time which is actually the same as Victor Renäng managed earlier. His second check is a little slow as he goes through in 48’40”, putting him 42” on the best time of Bernaudeau.
And his final time is 1h01’43”, which is still within a minute of that important 61 minute mark. Clearly this is one of Rujano’s better time trial efforts and he is going to lose less time than he was anticipating.
So we go from a pure climber to a pure time trialist. 68th placed Andrew Tennant surely had this stage circled in his race handbook and will be hoping for a big result today. Through the first check it is clear that he is on a magnificent ride – 21’11” puts him almost 20” faster than the previous best. And he keeps this speed through the second check as he goes through in 47’20”.
And we have a new best time of 1h00’05”. So close to that 1 hour mark! But more importantly that’s 44” better than the previous best of Bernaudeau. Could we be witnessing a huge upset as a Pro Continental rider takes a time trial stage at a Grand Tour?
To say that Ryan Eastman has been disappointing this race would be an understatement. From odd tactics (like getting in the break on stage 2) to poor positioning (like losing time on the final hill on stage 2), he really hasn’t done himself any favours. He isn’t brilliant against the clock but still needs to perform today to justify the huge amount of money the team has sunk into him. His performance at the first check is a strong 21’37”, just 1 second slower than Bernaudeau. He clearly expended a lot of energy at this early phase, however, as his second check is a much slower 48’16”.
And Eastman finishes in a time of 1h01’12”, which is rather disappointing compared to his first time. The key is clearly to conserve as much energy as possible for the end.
But blazing up behind him is Rigoberto Uran! He is a great time trialist and was listed as another outsider for this stage. And you can see why as he sets a new best at the first check of 20’59”. That’s 12” faster than Tennant! Some riders have been going too hard too early, however... but Uran isn’t one of them as he sets another new best at the second check. The time here is 46’51”, putting him almost 30” ahead of Tennant. The Colombian is flying!
And Rigoberto Uran sets a new best time at the finish, and it is a great one – 59’28”! He doesn’t just beat the 1 hour mark - he completely destroys it. You have to wonder if he can make back almost all the time he lost on the earlier stages
All of the riders from this point onward haven’t lost any time on the road stages, so they can fight it out for GC places. Of course with Uran surging up the board they are also going to be trying to defend their own positions. Note that some riders will be skipped over because they are not particularly good TT riders and aren’t riding for GC either.
The first of these riders is the young Rasmus Guldhammer, sitting in 37th. This is his weakest discipline by far and that’s why he is further down than the others – he was 69th in the prologue. And it doesn’t look like things will be much better today as he goes through the first check in 22’21”. Things continue poorly as his next time is 49’26”.
And his final time is 1h02’33”, which puts him in provisional 41st. He is going to slip a long way back today and indeed Uran easily overtakes him.
Pierre Rolland isn’t really a complete GC rider but he could make some nice inroads to stick his neck into the top 10 for at least one day, scoring some valuable points and getting the prestige. There is also a stage placing to think about. Indeed through the first check he is a serious contender as he clocks the third best time of 21’25”. He keeps his third place through the second check with a time of 47’23”.
And just for a change he finishes in third place, with a time of 1h00’06”, just 1 second slower than Tennant, who could well be lining up for a stage podium here.
Some have been tipping Tiago Machado as a possible rider to take out the whole race here, or at least a podium. Certainly he hasn’t shown himself much but after today things will get much easier for him. He just has to limit his losses here. His first time of 21’54” is perhaps not what he was looking for and indeed his second check of 48’24” is slower than Eastman’s time.
He finishes in 1h01’19”, which is certainly enough to limit most serious time losses, but in reality he was probably capable of more than that. He currently sits 15th on the provisional time.
Daniel Martin perhaps surprised a bit in the prologue as he finished 15th, but a lot of that was due to his climbing ability. Here it will just be one long contest over the flat. And certainly it must feel like a long day for him as his first check is a rather poor 22’04”. His second check doesn’t deliver any better news as it reads 48’48”, which is actually slower than Rujano.
Martin finishes the course in 1h01’48”, which is 33rd provisionally, but with the number of other TT riders left to come he may well drop down into about 40th on GC. One consolation for him will surely be that he held Uran off by 4”.
Another rider thinking more about the stage placing today is Dmitri Grabovski. He sits in 21st and could well move himself up temporarily. His first time is only 21’42”, which is actually worse than Eastman. But unlike the American Grabovski has clearly conserved some power and through the second check he moves up to 8th place with a time of 48’01”. Could he power on further up the standings?
He does indeed as he finishes in 1h00’51”, good enough for a provisional 5th. That may well be good enough for a top 10 today.
We now move into our top 20 and the first of those is Ian Bibby, who has kept himself out of trouble thus far, perhaps helped by his team of puncheurs. His first check is 21’36”, putting him easily in amongst the early time trialists, right where he wants to be. He clearly learned from earlier riders that you have to conserve energy, however, as he now pulls out a terrific 47’47” at the second check which will put him 4th there.
And Bibby will be truly pleased with his performance today as he comes in with a time of 1h00’36”, which is 4th at the moment. That’s two riders from Jaguar in the top 5 so far!
Riccardo Ricco is a much worse time triailist, so he will be one of those riders limiting his losses today. He really needs to do something in the mountains because his gap is likely to be quite daunting after today. His first check, however, is absolutely dismall. He goes through in 22’08”, which is one of the slowest efforts from a GC rider so far. His second check is certainly not any better as he goes through in 49’18”.
And his final time is 1h02’24”, well off some of his competitors and putting him in only 44th on the stage at the moment. Interestingly, it also means that Uran moves ahead of him in the general classification, which should give some indication of how poor that time was.
Moving now to 15th place, we have Juan Jose Cobo. Like Ricco he isn’t a particularly good time trialist, but unlike Ricco there isn’t a lot of pressure to perform. His first time is 22’08”, perhaps not as bad as could be expected. His second check is 48’58”.
And he finishes the course in 1h01’59”, and given that he was probably aiming for around the 62 minute mark, that’s an acceptable effort. He will lose time to Uran as well, but the top 15-20 are still in sight.
One of the riders truly looking to tear up the course today is surely Ruben Plaza. He starts the day in 14th overall but could certainly move up into the top 5. He really needs to make up time now because as soon as the toughest mountains come he will lose minutes. His first check is a fairly strong 21’30”. Things only get better from here, as he has clearly conserved energy and gets a time through the second check of 47’35”, good enough for 4th at the moment.
And he holds that speed to the end and gets a more than respectable 1h00’20”, which is 4th at the moment, moving between Rolland and Bibby.
Sitting in 12th overall is Stefan Denifl. He came a remarkable 8th in the prologue and will be hoping for a similar performance here to spur him into the top 10. Realistically though that course suited him much more than this one. His first check, however, is a relatively strong 21’53”, about the same time as Machado, who finished 15th earlier. His second check is another solid time of 48’26”.
And his final time is 1h01’21”, which is provisional 21st place and certainly another surprisingly good performance from the Austrian.
10th overall Alberto Contador was 6th in the initial time trial and will certainly be looking to put in a good showing here. While not as good a time trialist as the absolute best GC riders, he is certainly better than most. This longer test should suit him. His first time is a fairly average 21’36” but he really picks up and goes to set the 6th best time at the second provisional check of 47’50”.
Contador finishes the course in provisional 6th with a time of 1h00’37”, which I’m sure he will be happy with. Uran must also be getting excited because there aren’t many riders left who can beat him from here.
One of the riders who will certainly not be beating him today is Frank Schleck. Certainly the best puncheur in the race, he is also a poor time trialist. This will be about serious damage limitation and he will have to be more aggressive on the hills if he wants to make back any lost time. His first check is 22’14”, just inside the time of Ricco. His second check isn’t much better as he goes through in 49’11”.
And he finishes in provisional 44th place, with a time of 1h02’16”. That’s yet another rider who will be overtaken by Uran, who could well be moving into the top 20 today and back into GC contention.
It seems likely that Vincenzo Nibali, who sits in 7th at the moment, will want to try to defend his top 10 place before the mountains, which will give him more options as the race carries on. Certainly it is also a chance to really put some time into the slightly better climbers. And so he does at the first check as he goes through in 21’32”. His second check time is 47’43”, meaning that he has put 7” into Contador thus far.
The finishing time for Nibali is 1h00’28”, good enough for 5th thus far, just 4” slower than Bibby but more importantly 9” faster than Contador.
So we come to our top 5 and we start with one of the favourites to take the stage Justo Tenorio. He starts the day 7” down on GC but should be able to beat every rider ahead of him except perhaps Joost Posthuma. Just as a reminder the time to beat for the stage is 59’28” as set by Uran. The time through the first check is a solid 21’14”. Solid but still 15” slower than the Colombian. He clearly picks up the pace though as he moves into second at the 34km intermediate check, overtaking Tennant with a time of 47’05”.
And the time of Tenorio at the finish? 59’44”. That’s 16” too slow to take the stage win but certainly brilliant for his GC chances.
Following that brilliant performance is one of the big surprises of the prologue, as Luis Leon Sanchez goes out on course. He will be hoping for a good time here to get his GC bid off to a good start. His first time is 21’42”, which means that he has already dropped some time on likely rivals. His 48’06” at the second check also is a bit lacklustre.
And he finishes in 1h00’58”, which is currently 14th. That means that he will almost certainly drop out of the top 5 today, but will hold on to his top 10 position.
His much more anticipated teammate Joost Posthuma is next. He won the first stage and is the best time trialist here on paper, but we have already seen how good Uran’s time is, so can he do this? Remember that there is also a leader’s jersey on the table. He needs a time of 59’47” or better to stay ahead of Tenorio and lead the race for the second time. The Dutchman’s first check is 21’18”, meaning that he has already dropped 4” to Tenorio and 19” to Uran. Clearly something is not right as his second check is 47’15”, which is third place but still well behind both of the others. Perhaps his efforts in the break yesterday cost him too much energy?
And Posthuma looks absolutely broken as he crosses the line. His time is 59’57” – normally a time to be proud of but in this case he has failed to gain another day as race leader. Still, he will end the day as 3rd best time.
The race carries on as our second last rider Alejandro Valverde is next. This is his weakest discipline and he will be hoping to keep his GC position relatively intact before the mountains start tomorrow. His first time is 21’56”, which is actually not as bad as it could have been. His second check time is 48’37”.
And he finishes in a time of 1h01’35”, which is certainly acceptable and is good enough for provisional 33rd.
And last but not least we have our race leader Damiano Caruso. To say that he is not known as a time trialist would be an understatement. But really he has enjoyed a stage win and a day as race leader thus far so if he takes it easy certainly no one will blame him. His first time is 23’24”, which is 180th. His second check is 51’51”.
And he finishes the course in 1h05’30”, a time that is 186th out of 197. He waves to the crowd as he comes in and it is clear that either way he has enjoyed the novelty of being race leader.
So Rigoberto Uran takes a stage win which makes up for his earlier performances somewhat. Not only that but he surges up the table to 20th place, only 2’22” down on our new race leader Justo Tenorio. The whole GC has been reshaped and it will be shaken up again tomorrow as we hit our first mountain stage of the race. Joost Posthuma gets the points jersey as a consolation prize for his third place today.
