Well this appears to be the first simple stage of the race. A slightly bumpy starts leads to a long and steady descent and a mostly flat run-in to the finish. As such the pure sprinters are likely to have their first shot at a stage win. We saw yesterday that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen is the strongest of the sprinters who can climb a bit but how will he fair against the likes of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss?

Of course there is always the chance that a break could stay away and there are some early mountain points on offer. The first riders to give this a try is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Andrew Fenn.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-2.jpg

The early attacks who go with him are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Marc Machado
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Chris Froome
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Marcello Pavarin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Alex Dowsett
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Amael Moinard
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Jocelyn Bar
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Arnold Jeannesson

However, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Mikel Landa controls all of these attacks, trying to keep the break to an acceptable size for his leader i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Matthew Goss. It takes a short while for the next attack to occur and this time it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Michael Albasini, who attacks just a few kilometres before the only mountain points of the day. Several other riders find this an attractive prospect and they attack too, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Alex Dowsett being the only one who can force himself away to go with the Swiss rider.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-3.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Albasini clearly wants a larger group so he sits up. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Dowsett approaches the summit himself, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Pavarin attacks behind him for the points on offer. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Pavarin is surging up the climb, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Dowsett just holds him off to take the maximum ahead of the Italian. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Nathan Haas attacks out for third place.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-4.jpg

All of these attackers now sit up and wait for the next breakaway attempt to form. There are only 2 sprint points out on course and no more mountain primes, so there are rather slim pickings out there. A group of 4 riders attack out and, surprisingly, they manage to stay away. The group is:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Chris Froome
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Michael Albasini
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Damiano Caruso
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Joost Posthuma

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-5.jpg

That’s right, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Posthuma is in this group – he is on the same time as race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Alejandro Valverde. Not only that but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso is only 10” down on GC thanks to his win on the second stage and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Froome is 14” down. With the 2 sprint primes each giving a maximum of 6” either i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Posthuma or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso could conceivably take over the race lead. Remarkably they are allowed to get away and form our break of the day.

So we come to the first sprint point, which will be absolutely crucial. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Posthuma leads out the sprint but this is probably his weakest discipline and all three of the riders overtake him! Instead the winner is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Albasini and then i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Froome. So i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso is now only 4” down on GC and if he wins the next sprint prime then he is ahead on time, while a second place would result in yet another count back to fractions of a second. Meanwhile, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Posthuma just needs to scrape at least a third place at the next prime.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-6.jpg

We now received information that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Rafel Majka has been dropped from the bunch. He fell on stage 2 just before the end and so he is clearly injured. He will have to hope that he makes the time cut today.

But the peloton aren’t going slowly today by any means. The gap only hits a maximum of 4’40”. Clearly the sprint teams don’t want to miss out and indeed it is a combination of riders from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Koenigsegg who are working on the front. Perhaps the latter realise only now just how close they are to losing this jersey?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-7.jpg

So we get to our next sprint point which has taken on more importance than the race organisers could ever have realised... i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Posthuma starts at the back this time... but he just falls further behind. Crossing the line first? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Damiano Caruso, who now moves into the provisional lead on GC! All he has to do is finish in the lead group today and hope that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde can’t take any bonus seconds. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Albasini is second and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Froome is third. The gap is down to 2’25” with 30km to go.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-8.jpg

Into the final 10 kilometres and the gap is down to 32”. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia had done the bulk of the chasing with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina starting to pitch in the closer we get to the finish. All three clearly want to take today’s opportunity for their sprinters.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-9.jpg

With 5.5km to the line i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Jelle Wallays makes the catch. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars now look to set up their sprint train and already i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Matthew Goss has decided to bet it all on their train.
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Jose Rujano
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Samuel Dumoulin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png John Degenkolb
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dan Holloway
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Matthew Goss

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen is hanging around but has yet to attach himself to a train. He will be hoping to use his natural skill at positioning himself in sprints to benefit himself here.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-10.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano peels off with 3.7km to go, clearly not wanting to push himself too hard ahead of the mountain stages. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen decides to get on the back wheel of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss. Things won’t be uncontested though, as coming up on the right hand side of the road is the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina train. They have as their train:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Chris Anker Sorenson
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Benoit Sinner
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Oscar Guerao
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Greg Van Avermaet
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Michael Vanderaerden

In the middle of the road we have an interesting development as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Paride Grillo leads up i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Alejandro Valverde. He seized the jersey with time bonuses yesterday – will he defend it the same way? Remember, if he doesn’t get time here then he loses his lead.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-11.jpg

More sprinters start to come up. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Leigh Howard joins onto the i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars train while there are four more riders who take the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina train, perhaps because it is easier to get to. They are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Armindo Fonseca
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Maximiliano Richeze
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Raul Granjel Cabrera
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Pedro Merino Criado

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-12.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dumoulin comes off his train and it is still leading, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Sorenson has narrowed the gap.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-13.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Sorenson comes off the front and he has done a tremendous amount of good but as he peels off he slightly blocks i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Sinner, causing the train to slow down!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-14.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Sinner is forced to lead i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao to the middle of the road, while i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Van Avermaet is left with nothing to do except launch an early sprint, dragging the rest of the train with him.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-15.jpg

And this could be the death blow for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao’s chances – as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Vanderaerden goes he finds himself completely boxed in. Meanwhile the i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars train have sped on ahead.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-16.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Degenkolb has given a magnificent lead-out and now i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway looks to finish this off. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Van Avermaet is sprinting quickly!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-17.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen breaks to the right and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Howard follows him. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss is still in i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway’s wheel!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-18.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss finally jumps, with just 500 metres to the line! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera is coming up incredibly quickly on the right.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-19.jpg

With 250 metres to go it is a 3 way race. Who will it be?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-20.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Matthew Goss wins it by half a bike length! That’s his fourth ever Grand Tour stage win.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-21.jpg

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V4-22.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway will perhaps be disappointed to have come so close but will have to make do with 2nd. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen takes third place, which he is actually quite likely to be pleased with and it puts him in with a shout for the points jersey.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Howard holds off i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Granjel Cabrera to take fourth. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao, after a lead-out where everything seemed to go wrong, will have to accept his sixth place. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Richeze will take a seventh place and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Merino Criado came from a long way back for eighth. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Dockx is the biggest surprise in ninth and finally i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Matthews takes tenth place.

So looking at the jerseys, we now have our third red jersey wearer in four days as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Damiano Caruso takes over the general classification! After his first Grand Tour stage win a couple of days ago he now also gets to wear his first ever leader’s jersey. There is no change in the mountain classification but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Michael Van Stayen takes over the points competition by just one point over i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dan Holloway. With his superior climbing skills it will be interesting to see what he can do on some of the medium mountain stages. This also means that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Alejandro Valverde went from leading in two competitions to leading in none.

As a final note, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Rafel Majka did not make the time cut and has been eliminated.
