A trio of flat stages opens this race. The first of those will be tackled today, with Dekkers, Awang and Abakoumov expected to be the fastest ones.
Despite having nothing to really gain from attacking on an easily controlled stage like today's, Vitauskas Kaupas and Davide Villella decides to try.
They do at least get rewarded with both points and bonus seconds through the three intermediate sprints included in the stage. Kaupas is the quicker of the two and wins 2/3, with Lasca and twice Awang sprinting clear of the field to grab 3rd place and the remaining two points.
There is little the duo can do to prevent getting caught however, as Die Berg kept them in a tight leash and shuts them down already with 20 km to go.
Having spent all day taking it easy and profiting from Die Berg's willingness to do the work, Allianz and Sauber Petronas now take over the pacemaking as they rush towards the finish.
Interestingly, even Jiriakov has been ordered to help out.
There's not enough wind to cause any echelons, but the high speed does at least shell Villella out the back. Shame for the young Italian to the seconds he fought to gain at the sprints earlier go to waste now.
Meanwhile back at the front, Die Berg resumes the leading position inside the last 5 km, with Petrovski and Kochetkov leading out Abakoumov.
Finding position right behind the Belgian sprinter are Saramotins, Da Dalto, Demare, Haddi, Lasca and Selig.
The Allianz rider sitting next to Abakoumov is Havik, who is desperately looking behind to find his team leader Dekkers. Luckily for them, the Dutchman sits just behind the other sprinters - unlike Awang, who appears to be struggling a long way back.
Entering the last 3 km, Kochetkov cracks, forcing Abakoumov to tag onto Petrovski's wheel instead.
Meanwhile moving up on his left side is Dekkers, followed by Harrison.
Perhaps unaware that Dekkers still hasn't found his way up, it is Havik who opens the sprint with 1500m to go, distancing an empty Petrovski. This causes chaos to erupt as all the other sprinters launch behind.
Havik soon starts to lose his momentum, allowing Selig to overtake on the far right hand side, having been the first to respond to the acceleration.
Surprisingly, Abakoumov appears to have no response. Instead, it is Da Dalto coming through the middle to challenge, with Saramotins and Harrison following the slipstream.
As Selig soon starts to fade, Da Dalto powers through to take a shock stage win for Kappa. Clever tactics to let him go for himself rather than help the normally faster Lasca.
Saramotins and Harrison completes an unexpected podium, having picked the right wheel in the finale.
Rounding off a strange top 5 are Norman Hansen and Duchesne.
Abakoumov lets his team down with a very disappointing 11th place, while Dekkers (26th) and Awang (66th) were even worse off.
Most riders stayed in contact with the peloton all the way, but a few had to let go in the end. Unexpectedly among them we have Vattenfall's captain Gingsjo, who loses 1'35.
Also tailed off in the end was Kaupas, who thus wont be able to enjoy the bonus seconds he took earlier either.
