Vuelta a Espana - Stage 3
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-1.jpg

Yesterday saw some drama on the final hill for some GC riders. The course today isn’t likely to shake up GC too much, though with a fairly strong wind forecast for the whole day anything is possible. If yesterday’s stage was a fairly typical hilly Vuelta stage, today is a fairly typical Vuelta flat stage – that is to say, not very flat at all. There are a first, second and third category climb out on course, which may make some sprinters struggle. But it also means that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bassirou Konte is likely to lose his mountain jersey unless he can get in the break today as well.

The first attack today comes from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Peter Kennaugh, who was dropped fairly early in yesterday’s stage and as such is 12’34” down.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-2.jpg

He is joined by:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Amael Moinard
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Damiano Caruso
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Wilco Kelderman
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Peter Sagan
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Jose Mendes

They get a short lead but with yesterday’s winner i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso in the break (who is only 8” down on GC), as well as a number of other strong puncheurs, this is too dangerous to go and as such i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Welle Jallays makes the catch. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Bauke Mollema and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Brent Bookwalter help him out to keep the pace high. It is interesting to see some of the teams with sprinters doing the work – they are clearly confident about today.

The next attack is deemed acceptable and forms our break of the day:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Michael Faerk Christensen (+15’02”)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Vegard Robinson Bugge (+30”)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Jose Mendes (+16”)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Wilco Kelderman (+12’32”)

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-3.jpg

The sprint bonus seconds won’t be enough to overhaul GC so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes isn’t quite the danger he appears to be, unless the break go on to win, which on this course is entirely possible. Speaking of sprint points, the first one is slightly uphill, right near the base of the third category climb. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Bugge wins this ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes, while i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman just rolls over for this place, given the fact that he is much further back in GC.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-4.jpg

Of a maximum 32 points on offer today, 6 of them are at the summit of this climb, which would be enough to draw even with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Konte’s lead. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman launches the first attack, while all the riders stick to his wheel. Everyone is interested in this one.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-5.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman is forced to knock off the pace a bit, so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Bugge launches the next attack. But he can’t outdo i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes, who takes the maximum at the summit. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Bugge gets second and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman’s enthusiasm only nets him third. They now have a lead of 8’27” over the peloton.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-6.jpg

We now descend down to the second sprint point and here i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes makes up for his earlier missed effort, taking the maximum bonus seconds ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Bugge. With the 10 bonus seconds earned today, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes will move up to 6th overall if he finishes with the bunch, which would provide valuable publicity for the Portuguese team.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-7.jpg

Race radios erupt as crucial news arrives in – i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Frank Schleck has taken a fall! He gets up without any obvious problems and he gets into the bunch just fine, but the thought must now be lingering in his manager’s head – is he injured?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-8.jpg

We have the Vuelta’s usual rolling terrain before the final two climbs and it is here that i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Festina start to work together. They are working for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao respectively and clearly think their sprinters are capable of sticking with this one.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-9.jpg

With 53km remaining the break reach the base of today’s first category climb, the Puerto del Espino, which is a fairly reasonable 5% gradient the whole way up and hasn’t got any real spikes in gradient. Their lead is down to 3’52” already and they may struggle to extend it over this terrain.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-10.jpg

Back in the pack the first rider is dropped – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Rafel Majka. The young Polish rider crashed yesterday and it has clearly affected him today. He may rely on the fans to push him up.

There are 16 mountain points on offer at the top and thus the winner here is likely to wear the jersey on the podium after today’s stage. The first to attack is the man who won the earlier mountain prime – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-11.jpg

And i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Bugge comes around him this time, taking the maximum. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes just beats i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman to the line to take second place, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Bugge now leads him 20 points to 18 with one 10 point climb still to come.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-12.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Christensen comes over 44” later, but he rejoins on the descent. The leaders have a 2’48” gap over the peloton, which is now reduced to 191 riders – but who is missing? Perhaps unsurprisingly it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Michael Vanderaerden, who is not a noted climber of hills. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Pereyra, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Hirschlein and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Libert all wait for him to make sure he can get over the remaining hill and to the finish.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-13.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Jocelyn Bar falls on the descent but perhaps more importantly i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Domenik Klemme suffers a puncture. He is 10th overall and, while he isn’t going to be in the fight for GC overall, the position still is valuable.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-14.jpg

Both of them get back as the final climb starts, however. The gap to the break is 2’37”, with 33km remaining. Up front there are only 3 riders left, as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Christensen unhitches for good. This was always going to be a tough stage for him.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-15.jpg

This climb is much steeper than the previous one and as such it suits i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes much more. As such he easily takes the points at the summit. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Bugge manages second with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman once again third. This ties i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Bugge up on 28 points apiece. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes will wear the jersey tomorrow based on winning two summits over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Bugge’s one.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-16.jpg

But so convincing is the attack of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes that he just continues with it. He pulls out 25” over the top on the other two breakaway riders. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Project 1t4i lead the peloton over the climb. Most of the sprinters are still here in the 174 man group, though Lotto’s backup sprinter i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Maciej Ulanowski and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Jon Aberasturi are both dropped.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-17.jpg

The gap through the entire descent holds steady at 1’15” to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes. The breakaway are about 20” behind him.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-18.jpg

The peloton come down and start to get buffeted by coastal winds. Pokerstars have taken up the pace for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dan Holloway. Confusingly, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Welle Jallays and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Jelle Wallays are the two riders doing most of the work. With 7km left the gap is down to 34” and the two chasers have been caught.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-19.jpg

The high speed of the pack together with these strong cross-winds are causing difficulties at the back and gaps are starting to open up. There is no chance to get information about who is back here, so we will have to see what happens and they will have to hope that they can hang on until the finish!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-20.jpg

With 3.4km to go i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars have set up their train but it is notably missing one of their key riders – i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png John Degenkolb was initially leading out for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dan Holloway but the wind hurt him and he has been forced to sit up somewhat.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-21.jpg

So the train at the moment is:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Jelle Wallays
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dan Holloway
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Michael Van Stayen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Alejandro Valverde
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Julien Simon

Most of the sprinters appear to have been really struggling, given riders like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon a real chance. Not only that but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde is here to sprint for bonus seconds! A third place on the stage would draw him level on time with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Joost Posthuma and it would come down to fractions of a second from the time trial! But the gap is still sitting at 16” to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon comes out of the wheel of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde and moves to the right. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Posthuma gets into his wheel and looks like he is about to sprint! Is he going for bonus seconds himself? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bibby gets on his back wheel meanwhile on the right there’s a Festina rider... but it isn’t i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao. It is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Mollema, who seems intent on fighting this out too.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-22.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Wallays seemed to be starting his lead-out but now with 1.8km remaining he takes a chance and jumps onto i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon’s back wheel, putting i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway in a more comfortable position and bumping i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Posthuma out as quickly as he got there. This leaves i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen with no lead-out but he has a train of his own behind him:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Guldhammer
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Merino Criado
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-23.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Wallays has to peel off, leaving i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway to close the gap to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen now manages to muscle his way on to i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway’s wheel, keeping himself out of the wind much more. The gap to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes also seems to finally be closing.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-24.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon has spent too long in the wind and just as he is about to catch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes he has to peel off, with about 1100 metres to go. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway opens up and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen starts to look to come around him.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-25.jpg

It is down to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway, who can take this?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-26.jpg

With 500 metres to go, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen goes clear!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-27.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon is doing well in third, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde is challenging. If i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Simon takes third he will defend his team’s leader’s jersey while if i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde takes it there is a chance he could become the new leader.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-28.jpg

But before that, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Michael Van Stayen adds to his total of Vuelta stage wins – this is his 3rd Vuelta stage in his career!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-29.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dan Holloway will have to be content with a second place on the stage. But everyone is watching for third place... and it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Alejandro Valverde!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-30.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Julien Simon faded a lot, and ended up in 12th. Fourth place went to a surprising i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Rasmus Guldhammer. His teammate i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Domenik Klemme recovered from his earlier puncheur to take fifth. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Daniel Martin is in sixth with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Ian Bibby in seventh. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png David de la Fuente, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Luis Leon Sanchez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Ruben Plaza ensure another three Spaniards in the top ten.

But where were the other sprinters? We get an answer as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Guerao leads in the second group on the road. This was just too hard for most of the pure sprinters. The climbs took their toll and then the fast pace through the high winds was the final straw.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/v3-31.jpg

But now the real question is this – who is our new leader? The judges consult the time trial results, counting back to fractions of a second... and they judge that the current race leader is...
