Tour of Southland - Stage 8
roturn
imageshack.us/a/img197/6659/mg2013southland8pcm0043.jpg

With 80km another very short stage for the sprinters. Maksimov, Guillén and Torckler are the sprint winners so far and the first two must be names as top favourites.
But several other riders will also try to sign into the winner lists such as Drapac or Thorsen.

imageshack.us/a/img191/7496/mg2013southland8pcm0044.jpg

As wished by their managers their riders joined todays breakaway.
Now with Rocchetti not longer in the race lead Evian`s helpers get some freedom.
And also KoM leader Hugentobler is active again to secure his KoM lead.

This went more difficult than expected for Hugentobler. Instead of taking some more points easily he couldn`t match his companions and only collected 1 more point. Gougeard and Horgan beat him to take the bigger points.
But with a gap of 6 points to his team mates and 7 to another team his lead is pretty much secured.

imageshack.us/a/img560/5138/mg2013southland8pcm0048.jpg

3min later the peloton passes the KoM with 40km to go. Mainly team Gazelle is working to defend the leader jersey.

imageshack.us/a/img42/7305/mg2013southland8pcm0052.jpg

It was a hard fight to catch them. But with only 4km left the peloton finally made it to secure another sprint finish.

imageshack.us/a/img850/5296/mg2013southland8pcm0054.jpg

Again the sprinter teams form their trains and bring their leaders to the front.
Different to yesterday Banco Nacionale found a better position and so Guillén and Maksimov will get another 1-1 battle to find out, who is the better CT Tour sprinter.
Also Thorsen with an own train even though it`s still a bit blocked behind Maksimov.
And most important mayby that Gomenyuk is feeling much better again to work as first leadout in the Privatbank train.

imageshack.us/a/img690/1627/mg2013southland8pcm0065.jpg

Gomenyuk and Kopp leave the first position at the same time with 2,3km while Allianz is coming fast on the right with still 2 riders ahead of Thorsen.
Gomenyuk seems to feel much better, but still it`s the train sitting in 3rd position only, so maybe they should have changed their train after already 2 stage wins.

imageshack.us/a/img692/176/mg2013southland8pcm0068.jpg

With 1,4km to go the Allianz train is once again gone.
And while Vorganov is doing a great job to leadout Maksimov, it`s Havik somehow finding room to disturb the Privatbank train, while Thorsen can`t match the speed obviously.

imageshack.us/a/img211/883/mg2013southland8pcm0074.jpg

Last 700m and Guillén and Drapac are in the wind with Giacoppo in a very good position behind them.
Maksimov is ~3 bike lengths behind and needs good legs now.

imageshack.us/a/img268/6904/mg2013southland8pcm0076.jpg

Guillén is struggling and losing to Drapac now. Also Giacoppo is coming fast with Maksimov being a danger as well.

imageshack.us/a/img14/3251/mg2013southland8pcm0077.jpg

With an incredible finish on the last 200m Maksimov somehow managed to fly past all other sprinters to take the win. It`s his 3rd win here in Southland making it a good race for him and maybe even his breakthrough.
Once again as 2nd Drapac is back in form while Jang as 3rd for the first time showed a good sprint. Just like Maksimov he came out of nowhere in the end.

Giacoppo also struggled towards the end as 4th ahead of Friedman and Guillén, who wasn`t able to keep his good position.

Torckler, Meenhorst, Hochmann and race leader Nardin complete the top10, so Thorsen once again shows that he isn`t made for the real road sprints. He finished far off as 25th.

Counting all points together Maksimov will win the point classification already today as Drapac and Guillén had 1-2 bad days and Nardin and Torckler weren`t scoring high enough in the pure flat sprints.
