100km of almost pan flat terrain. From the experience of the last two stages we have to expect another sprint finish with Maksimov, Guillén and Drapac being the favourites due to their performance so far.
No breakaway until the KoM once again. Not many teams try to break out early for some reason. At least some of them should be more interested.
So it was easy for Hugentobler to extend his lead as he takes the max points here.
Kochetkov and yesterdays solo leader Delgerbayar take the next points.
They still lead at the intermediate sprint with a small gap.
Delgerbayar, Kochetkov and Hugentobler are the first three riders here.
And as the peloton doesn`t seem to care at all they decide to hold on creating a bigger gap. The 4th rider is Seo from the Japanese-Korean Cycling Project.
Same scenario as the last days. Evian is doing everything until the breakaway starts to become very dangerous. Today they still have a 3min gap with 40km to go and only two Evian riders are doing the pace.
2km later the sprinter teams realize that it`s up to them. So Privatbank and Allianz come to the front and the gap melts.
Seo, who saved his energy the most at the two sprints fought the longest. But with less than 5km to go the peloton also caught the Korean and Privatbank took over.
The sprint today is not organized very well. One reason could be the worse weather today. Not only it`s colder than recently but also very, very windy.
Athanasiades Hoelgaard Maksimov Petit Torckler Scully Siskevivius Nardin Porsev Morales Drapac Friedman
So it`S looking pretty good for Maksimov to take his 2nd stage win here, while Guillen, Gavazzi, Hochmann, Thorsen, Awang or Giacoppo all suffer from the wind.
Thorsen actually is the worst as he couldn`t even stay in the peloton. A group of 15-20 riders is behind the peloton after a corner, where the wind changed hard.
And the news for Team Allianz won`t become much better as their GC rider and 10. overall Kim Kirchen obviously waits for their sprinter. With 2,2km to go this is a very stupid move.
The heavy wind really destroyed the sprint preparations. So it`s Hoelgaard now going with 2km to go but his leader isn`t behind him.
On the other side Torckler also went early with Maksimov and Petit closing the gap.
Torckler really is strong here and the crowd is cheering for him.
Hoelgaard is not a real sprinter and is slowing down, while also Maksimov can`t follow. The Privatbank train was far too early in the wind it seems.
Therefore Petit with Siskevicius behind him are going fast.
800m for Torckler and still he has a nice gap, while Siskevicius comes around Petit. The French also was too early in the wind and just Torckler seems to be able to do so and still be quick today.
This came out of nowhere. It looked like the podium was decided, just the order wasn`t.
But here comes Nardin and he comes fast. He did the right thing by waiting longer today and seems fresher than the others.
But can he also close the gap to Torckler?
200m left and he is coming dangerously close. The other two weren`t a problem and the Gazelle rider surely is the quickest by far now.
Close, yes. But Torckler was impressive today. As first in the wind he was able to hold on until the line and takes the first stage win for a Kiwi in this race. The crowd is celebrating.
Nardin finishes as 2nd and both take important bonus seconds here, which might become very useful after tomorrows stage, when it`s going uphill again.
The fight for the last podium was won by Siskevicius ahead of Petit, who showed some strength today by beating most better sprinters.
Also Scully as 5th is impressive as he comes in ahead of Maksimov. Rocchetti, Kopp, Hoelgaard and Porsev are the last riders in the top 10.
Drapac (19), Friedman (22), Guillén (27), Gavazzi (28), Giacoppe (40), Hochmann (48) all had no impact today.
And good news this time for Allianz. The gap could be closed in the sprint and so Kirchen won`t lose time today and keeps his chances for a high GC placement.
