Sorry for the delay, Roturn did some road work and remove a couple of narrow finishes for me. And now that it's done we can head back to the action at hand.
It's the same favourites we have seen all tour so no need to repeat myself let's jump right into it.
Some pretty interesting names trying to jump in the breakaway today including Danielson, Kiserlovski, and Demare. But the first attempt doesn't stick.
After a few attempts Danielson finally realized the peloton isn't going to let him get away. So after he stopped trying, we get this 5-man breakaway and some rain.
Demare
Vink
Kiserlovski
Retschke
Oliver
Vink was the only member in the group to have KoM points coming into today and is the only one interested in getting a few more points.
Nobody can be bothered to sprint at the other two checkpoints on route today either. With all of them being at least three minutes back they are more concerned about pulling off back-to-back breakaway wins. And right now they are doing an okay job, 6'45" lead with 95kms to go.
The rain let up for a little bit but reemerged with 40kms to go. Then quickly after the rain took its first victim, Suray with a flat tire. The breakaway isn't fairing too well either at the moment as their lead is down to 2 minutes by some great pace making from Flens.
The rain takes another victim with 22kms to go, Pate with a flat.
Die Berg completes the catch of the breakaway around 10kms to go. The rain is still pounding away with a very technical finish ahead.
For the first time this tour it's Allianz making the lead train for Thorsen. Very strange since the finish is slightly uphill and they only have 4 riders in the race.
Kirchen leads out Thorsen with Lasca on his wheel.
While BCR are storming their way to the front with Colex, Morales, and Guillen. Following their train are,
Friedman
Chicchi
Abdallah
Lay
Schinker
Papok
Polivoda
Speirs
In the middle not wanting to commit to Allianz's train are Rizza, Hochmann, and Renshaw.
Hochmann doesn't want to follow Lasca so Die Berg makes their own mini-train with Rizza and Renshaw tagging along. 2200 meters left with a couple trick bends in the final kilometer.
Lasca doesn't seem confident behind Thorsen as the road kicks up a little and Hochmann is giving one heck of a lead out for Rizza and Renshaw. Morales is now in full sprint trying to give Guillen a chance.
Thosen hasn't even started sprinting and is already fading. Rizza kicks just as soon as Morales gets to Renshaw's wheel.
There isn't much room for Guillen to make a move as Hochmann is going backwards since his job is done and Morales is out of gas as well. Blocking in Guillen and the rest of the sprinters behind him.
Guillen is completely blocked in by his own teammate. And now Thorsen looks like he has found new life getting on the back of Lasca. Behind it's mess trying to avoid the dead end Morales, Hochmann, and Guillen have created. Something has to give.
Hochmann finally gives enough space for Guillen to get around, but it's still Rizza and Renshaw's stage to lose at the moment after that great lead out.
Now the second tricky twist in the final kilometer sees Lasca coming into the lead with Thorsen still following him. Guillen is also looking really strong, has he finally timed it right? Getting blocked in might have actually helped him. The only other sprinters to have a shot now are Lay, Chicchi, and Abdallah lurking in the second row.
300 meters. Lasca is ahead by a wheel over Renshaw, as Rizza is now moving backwards into the pack. Guillen has a shot if he can't get around Renshaw.
The line is finally in sight. Abdallah and Lay are making a strong push while everyone else is just hanging on.
Lasca does hang on to win the stage after putting faith in the Allianz's sprint train and then ditching it at the right moment.
Renshaw gets rewarded for trusting the Die Berg train and the often criticized Thorsen puts his 4-man team to work and rewards them with a 3rd place.
A very close finish for 5th between the guys many thought should have been competing for the victory. Guillen just beats the charging Lay.
The rest of the top 10 goes Abdallah, Chicchi, Friedman, Rizza, and Schinker.
Papok with an unusual bad day in this tour and finishes 15th and gets a single sprint point. But he will retain the green jersey after all the points he stockpiled earlier in the tour.
