Giro d'Italia - Stage 10
SportingNonsense
The peloton spent a night at altitude at Roccaraso, but the race is not going to get much easier now that the first Mountain stages have passed. Chieti is the destination, more commonly found in the Tirreno-Adriatico, and it's steep Via del Tricalle climb will be raced 3 times.

Despite his recent time loss, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Yuri Trofimov is the obvious favourite to make this stage his 3rd win of the race, and start gaining back that time. It could also be a good opportunity for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Riccardo Ricco to regain some time - and perhaps for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Simon Spilak to take over from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Angel Madrazo in applying pressure on i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Taylor Phinney at the top of the standings.

And then there is a question of how the puncheurs in the field can do. Is Chieti perfect for them, or will it be too hard? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Dimitri Claeys, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Aleksandr Efimkin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Diego Ulissi and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Damiano Caruso will be eager to find out.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-1.jpg

A fast downhill start does not deter the attackers, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Kevin Fouquet is the first to launch a move on the initial steep section.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-2.jpg

This led to a further 9 riders joining the move:

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Jetse Bol
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Wes Sulzberger
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Welle Jallays
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Martin Hacecký
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Fabio Duarte
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Aleksandr Dyachenko
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Yonathan Monsalve
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Philip Deignan
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Daniel Navarro

Theres 2 reasons why this is not going to work though. Firstly because there is too many of them. Secondly, because i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Sulzberger is here. A sure fire guarantee that this won't be the move that goes clear!

The 10 are replaced by 1, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Francisco José Terciado presses forwards alone.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-3.jpg

He won't stay alone, as 5 more join him.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Petar Panayotov

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Taylor Tolleson

But they can't stop him winning the first KoM.

The race has been a let down for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte so far as he is not even in the Top 50 GC - and only the 5th best placed rider in this break. His hopes of salvaging this race lie in breakaways from now on.

The best placed rider in here is 27th overall i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Dyachenko and the Kazakh rides over the second KoM first.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Dyachenko also led through the intermediate sprint as the route hit the coast. There is a strong sidewind present which could cause trouble later in the day in the peloton.

The presence of Chieti will dominate the stage more though and as the breakaway approach the first ascent they hold a 6 minute lead. With 42km to go, that is quite a handy advantage.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-6.jpg

Once again i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia have been left to do all the work - so perhaps today will be another win for the breakaway. Although i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Elissonde, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Meyer, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Pinot, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Mccarthy and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Atapuma can't resist applying a little bit of pressure as the peloton takes on the Chieti climb for the first time.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-7.jpg

A successful day continues for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Dyachenko as he wins another KoM by being first to the top of the climb. The bad news is that their lead has now been slashed to 3 minutes.

The damage has been done at the other end too, with 84 riders being dropped on that 1 climb alone. The sprinters amongst those who decided they had better things to do than match the pace of the leaders today!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-9.jpg

Wikipedia arent really chasing, and for the rest of the circuit the gap remains constant. But even with the presence of good climbers in the breakaway group, it does seem a tall order for them to stay clear over 3 ascents up Via del Tricalle.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-10.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia are certainly earning plenty of plaudits for their riding in the race, but it just got a whole lot more challenging as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Yuri Trofimov attacks!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-11.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Diego Ulissi is immediately with him, and all hell breaks loose behind as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Taylor Phinney is the next man to launch a move.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-13.jpg

Meanwhile the breakaway picked up some more KoM points at the summit:

Down the other side of the hill, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Yuri Trofimov has come out strongest of the attackers.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-14.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricco and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Sicard are chasing - the Frenchman continuing his impressively strong race - with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Velits also clear of the peloton.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Wallays, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Phinney, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Ulissi and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Gastauer try to attack across but cannot get a gap, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Trofimov catches the breakaway and is then joined by Ricco and Sicard.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-15.jpg

Two Bacardi and two Pearl Adidas riders in the move could help the pace setting - but it is irrelevant as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Trofimov has sat himself on the front, motoring towards the finish line.

Next to attack are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Emanuele Sella and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Simon Spilak. Together, they bridge across to the front group.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-16.jpg

5 kilometres remaining, and chasing a chance to regain time and win another stage, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Trofimov is really burying himself on the front of the group. The gap is not huge though, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Kiserlovski leading the peloton.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-17.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Ben Gastauer attacks from the peloton, and soon after the Trofimov group is caught. The Luxembourger carries through his attack though, and opens up a lead as the final Chieti climb begins.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-18.jpg

There's a lull in the action - so perfect timing for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Gastauer's move - but then i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Trofimov does respond.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-19.jpg

The Russian glides past Gastauer, and has i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Riccardo Ricco chasing after him now.

Positioning is vital at this stage, but some of the top puncheurs in the field are poorly positioned at the back of this reduced peloton. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Claeys, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Betancourt and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso are not helping their chances here.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-21.jpg

The sprint is off and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricco immediately looks to challenge i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Trofimov.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-22.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Angel Madrazo is poorly placed here if any gaps can emerge at the front. Beside him is a favourite for the stage in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Aleksandr Efimkin, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Dimitri Claeys has started to move up a little too - but surely too late. Some of the leading GC contenders are best placed to take the stage now, rather than the puncheurs.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-23.jpg

Sure enough, it is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Taylor Phinney who is looking strongest into the final kilometre as he rides past a faltering i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Trofimov.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-24.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Phinney moves alongside i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricco, but so does i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Simon Spilak - the Slovenian edging in front now.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-25.jpg

But coming up fast is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Aleksandr Efimkin. Bad position overcome, and he is the next man to move ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Trofimov.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-26.jpg

But if i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Efimkin is quick, then what about i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Dimitri Claeys! From the back of the group right up to the front, the Belgian is flying.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-27.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Spilak's lead is going to be shortlived as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Claeys storms into first place.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-28.jpg

Such an explosive finish by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Dimitri Claeys, and he wins his 3rd career Giro stage. More importantly, it is Lotto-Cervelo's first ever Grand Tour stage win!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-29.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Claeys was so strong that he is actually awarded a 9 second gap on the line - not that the extra time will mean much to him.

Time is more important for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Simon Spilak though, and he reduces Phinney's race lead by taking 2nd place. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Aleksandr Efimkin takes 3rd, the best result to date for the wildcard Cisco squad.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-30.jpg

4th for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Taylor Phinney will give the American the lead in the Points competition, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Riccardo Ricco takes 5th and another fast finishing puncheur i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Damiano Caruso grabs 6th.

Only 7th for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Yuri Trofimov, who perhaps believed his own hype and expended far too much energy for no reward in the lead up to the uphill finish.

There's Top 10 finishes too for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png López Garcia, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Augustyn and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Ulissi.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/gdi/rocachieti-31.jpg

As mentioned, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Phinney now leads the Points competition - 1 point ahead of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Ben Swift, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png a further point behind in 3rd.

3rd place on the stage brought i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Efimkin 6 KoM points and he now moves up to 2nd, within 2 points of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Riblon. That competition is becoming increasingly close as the race goes on.

Meanwhile, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia's teams classification lead over Pendleton's has been extended by 3 minutes to 13.

All riders finished within the time limit, and Lotto bookend the day's results after i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Ciolek punctured some time after already being dropped, and struggled in alone a long time after everybody else.
