Rizza, Guillen, and Hochmann are your favourites, strange to see our two previous stage winners Papok and Lay aren't apart of the top 3 to beat.
Five riders are apart of the opening attack,
Andersson
Hoelgaard
Abreu
Chacon
Vink
Abreu and Vink are the familiar faces after being in the breakaway on stage 2.
But it's a no go. So Matteau and Mihaylov lead the next attempt.
They are quickly overtaken by the first attackers as all 5 of them try their luck again.
The peloton doesn't like this group up front but isn't chasing hard enough to pull back the minute they gave them when they attacked.
Eventually the peloton finally gives in and allows this to be the BOTD.
Hoelgaard is the best sprinter and best placed overall (+37" ) in the breakaway as he makes his presences know right away by winning the first sprint point by a landslide. Andersson beats Vink for 2nd.
At the second sprint point Hoelgaard takes 1st once again this time challenged a little bit more by Vink, leaving Andersson with 3rd as Abreu and Chacon didn't sprint at either markers.
Perhaps they are saving their energy to grab the first king of mountains jersey but Credexbank is already closing in and could have the breakaway caught before they even reach the only KoM point on the route.
It's just a minutes lead as they approach the climb.
The organizers have already pulled their car out from the gap with 20kms to go.
Hoelgaard wants to go 3 for 3 today as he attacks 2100 meters to the top. Abreu is the first to counter but shortly after everybody is up on their pedals.
As Hoelgaard sits down so does everyone else behind him, the next attack should be wearing the KoM jersey tomorrow.
And it's Chacon, but Hoelgaard has left a little bit of energy in his reserves to try and take it on the line.
But it isn't enough, Chacon gets Iberia the KoM jersey to go along with their stage win yesterday by Lay.
On the descent the breakaway is caught by Die Berg.
It's BCR and Allianz helping Die Berg to keep the tempo high heading into the final 10kms.
Very similar to stage 3, BCR has made the only sprint train with Colex and Morales for Guillen. Behind are Rizza, Schinker,
Papok,
Friedman with Lasca and Thorsen fighting for his wheel.
Further behind Thorsen are Lay, Polivoda, and Renshaw.
Thorsen has lost contract of Lasca's wheel putting Lay, Polivoda, Renshaw, Chicchi, Speirs, and Abdallah in a second chase group.
Now Lasca and Friedman have lost contract to Papok. Leaving Guillen, Rizza, Schinker, and Papok to battle for the win.
Guillen hasn't brought his legs to Romania it seems as Morales pulls off and Guillen has nothing left in his tank, Rizza goes right around him. Behind Lasca is leading a ferrous charge to the front with Speirs and Abdallah tagging along.
Schinker and Papok make their moves on opposite sides of Rizza.
Now here comes Lasca out of nowhere along with Speirs.
Schinker didn't have much in his tank but Papok is giving Rizza a run for his money. They can't look at each other for too long as Lasca is still coming strong.
Papok does it as he gets around Rizza for his second win of the tour and extends his lead with the 20 bonus seconds. However the climbers won't be concerned because he is a terrible climber to say the least.
Lasca had arguably the best sprint today but lost Papok's wheel at the worst time and it probably cost him the stage win, he settles for 3rd.
Polivoda with a strong finish like Lasca to get 4th ahead Friedman, Speirs, and Schinker.
Lay can only manage 8th after winning a day ago, positioning was his downfall. 9th to Renshaw and rounding out the top 10 is Tianen. Guillen slips all the way back to 14th! His team might have to check his bike or start asking some tough questions towards Guillen as his team gave him a perfect lead out the past two days and he has ruined both of them.
And just like yesterday another split occurs during the sprint. Don't the climbers learn from their previous encounters with danger. Favourites that are potentially caught out are:
Niemiec
Oliveira, Sanchez
Naibo
Camano
Colorado
Danielson
Their managers aren't going to happy but when the gap is that big the organizers have no choice but to grant it. They all lose 1'56", and it goes to show that you have to finish the stage all the way to line and not get caught napping. In total 23 riders finish in this group and have their GC hopes have taken a tough hit.
