A little bit longer than stage 2 with a tiny incline near the finish is ahead for the sprinters. Papok upset the favourites on stage 2 to give Credexbank their first win of the season. So will Lay and Guillen get it right this time around or is another spoiler in the works?
It doesn't take long for the first attacks of the day.
Joeaar
Rodriguez Oliver
Demare
Joeaar had the good opening time trial and is 6th overall (+8" ), Oliver tried and fail to get in the breakaway yesterday, and Demare is a dangerous hilly sprinter to have out front.
But the peloton is content to let these three guys go.
100kms left, the breakaway has already hit their a maximum advantage of 8 minutes before the peloton lead by Kenya Airways started to close in the gap. Right now it's down to 6'30".
Approaching the first sprint point it's seems certain than Demare should take it easily over Joeaar and Oliver. But if you do the math, Joeaar could still take virtual yellow with two 2nd places, as that would give him 8 seconds.
And that is what exactly happens. Joeaar even gives Demare all he can handle at the 2nd sprint point but still gets 2nd by a few inches. He can celebrate for now as he has taken the yellow jersey away from Rijntjes by 2 seconds. But it's the sprinters that will have the final say if he gets to put it on after the stage.
Speaking of which, the peloton already has the breakaway in their sights with 30kms to go.
Cut the distance in half and Joeaar has made his last ditch attack and is holding a minutes lead over the charging peloton with with breakaway partners stuck in the middle.
There is a lot of indecision in the peloton about how should be chasing. And finally with 12kms to go BCR takes up the responsibility. However as the peloton were looking around at each other the guys up front picked up an extra few seconds.
But it won't matter as BCR puts the hammer down and Joeaar is caught with 8kms to go. It's going to take all he has left to hang on to the peloton if wants to get yellow at the end of the day in case the sprinters don't take it from him.
That transitions nicely into the fact that 2nd overall Vink has just been dropped. Not surprising considering the hard day he had in the breakaway on stage 2.
Back up front, Colex is final lead out for Guillen, with Lay, Papok, Polivoda, Lasca, and Speirs all in line behind him.
Up and over the small speed bump, it's just 1 long train lead by BCR. Joining now behind Lasca is Rizza, Meenhorst, and Renshaw as Speirs get pushed off Lasca's wheel.
Meenhorst and Renshaw are the first to go with 1800 meters left.
And they go straight into lead. Horgan is coming up right behind them as the main train has yet to kick, they can't wait much longer.
Meenhorst is under the banner as chaos ensues behind as all of the sprinters that were in BCR's train have all kicked at the same time.
Out of that group Lay was gone by Guillen but he is only in 4th as Tianen jumped early like Meenhorst and Renshaw except on the right side of the road to move into 3rd. But more surprising is the man drafting off him, Ibarguren who has no right to be where he is, he is out sprinting teammate Rizza!
As Meenhorst and Renshaw fade away with 500 meters to the line, Lay surges to the lead. Tianen is still holding strong but is being challenged by Ibarguren for 2nd! This is an unbelieving showing of form from him.
The legs finally give out from Tianen.
Lay is home free, but it's going to interesting to see if Ibarguren can keep 2nd over Papok, as it looks like Guillen is going to have to settle for 4th.
Victory to the Spaniard Lay, and with the bonus seconds move him into 2nd overall. If could have been wearing yellow as Joeaar was shuffled through the peloton and dropped, not fair considering all the effort he exerted in the breakaway. That moved Lay up into 1st but...
Papok gets around the surprise of the day Ibarguren. And with the bonus seconds will swap the green jersey for the yellow as he surpasses Lay by 4 seconds. Guillen just can't get his timing right as he gets 4th beating out Tianen.
The rest of the top 10 is lead by Aussie Renshaw in front of Polivoda, Meenhorst, Speirs, and Lasca.
But the excitement isn't done there, a break in the peloton occurs during the sprint. Over 40 riders are caught out!
The GC contenders are,
Rudaskov
Ndbri, Camano
Parra Bustamente, Colorado
Sanchez, Olveira
Niemiec
Danielson
But, the gap isn't big enough! They will all finish on the same time, they were facing at least a minutes gap to the lead group if the organizers decided to recognize the split. The climbers have to be more careful considering there are still 5 more flat stages to go.
