Stage two of the Glava Tour has a very flat profile, just like stage 1. That means that there should be a similar outcome today with a massed sprint. The favorites are the riders who did well yesterday, and some of the bigger names who missed out. The main names mentioned pre-stage are
Lay,
Guillén and
Sutton.
Yesterday’s winner Ciocan isn’t there and many see his win as lucky. He will be hoping to prove them wrong.
It is a sunny day in Norway as we pull out of the start. Straight away a group of four attacks away and gets a 45 second gap. The names are Renang, Hagen, talent Dombrowski and climber Di Gregorio. Porsev is also trying to bridge up to the quartet and is in the gap.
It is very unusual for a rider in Di Gregorio’s position as having a teammate in the leader’s jersey to get in the break. We will see if the peloton are happy with this or not.
Porsev bridges the gap relatively quickly and the five make it to the day’s only mountain sprint together. Hagen takes it ahead of Porsev and Renang, but Veilleux will retain the jersey after winning two sprints yesterday.
The quintet aren’t in the clear yet though. The peloton are keeping the gap under a minute thanks to BNCR and Credexbank.
Eventually though they fight through and pull away, currently holding around 2 minutes on the bunch. Great news for Mobil, who despite having the race leader will not have to chase.
The five riders have pulled out 4’16 as we reach the first of two intermediate sprints. Porsev unsurprisingly takes it due to him being the strongest sprinter in the group. Hagen and Dombrowski get second and third.
With 50 kilometers left the bunch has started to increase the pace. Ibeira are the main driving force, probably for Lay, while Mobil are also lending a hand despite Di Gregorio being up the road. The gap is dropping but it still currently stands at 3’24. The break probably doesn’t have much hope though on this flat run-in.
Up at the front Porsev takes the final sprint like the first. Hagen gets another second and Di Gregorio sneaks into third. The gap has fallen further now to just 2 minutes now that we enter the business end of the race.
And that gap is closed to just 30 seconds as we near the last 20 kilometers. Porsev attacks away in a desperate attempt at getting a little more camera time, with everyone bar Hagen following.
They get nowhere though, so Di Gregorio tries again. The others can’t follow so the Frenchman sets off alone, 42 seconds ahead of the pack.
The other four attackers are swept up with 12 kilometers left so Di Gregorio is the last rider off the front. It looks as if he will be caught soon with BNCR pulling hard but you never know.
Other than that, the race looks poised for another bunch sprint. BNCR and Credexbank look like the main driving forces like yesterday, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are the favorites, after they got swamped yesterday.
Into the final 10 kilometers and Mobil’s attacker has been swept up. We will have a bunch sprint.
Credexbank have set up a train and have three men in front of Kanovsky. BNCR are just behind preparing a leadout for Guillén but the Belarussians are well in control. Ben Youcef, Lay and Sutton are also well positioned.
The sprint has started and BNCR has moved into control as once again Credexbank’s efforts have proved lackluster. Guillén is in pole position with Morales giving him a great leadout. Lay is just behind in his wheel.
1200m to the line and Guillén has been launched into the lead. Credexbank have fought their way back to the front and Clarke is right behind the Costa Rican, yet to release Kanovsky. Lay and Sutton are both waiting to start their final kick within the first few positions.
Only 800m left and Guillén is still sprinting strongly. Crespo, Kanovsky and Lay are coming fast from behind though! Can they catch him?
He is still riding well with 400m left…
But has faded with just 100m to go! Dekkers and Lay have come past the Costa Rican champion and are fighting each other for the win.
Dekkers takes it! What a great final sprint from the Dutchman, overtaking most of the main sprinters in the last few meters to claim victory.
Sutton got second by centimeters against Lay who also gets a podium, in third.
Lasca repeats his previous success in fourth, as does Ciocan in fifth.
Kanovsky, Lequatre, Ben Youcef, Guillén and Speirs complete the top 10 in that order. Especially a disappointing finish from BNCR’s leader, after leading for so long during that last kilometer.
After the stage, Sutton moves into the leader’s jersey after gaining more bonus seconds. Risa-Ergon will have to defend his lead tomorrow.
