Volta ao Alentejo - Stage 2
SportingNonsense
The race continues with a stage that is most likely to favour the sprinters who can handle the hills with the Category 3 climb towards the end, and then an uphill rise up to the finish sprint. And as Stage 1 proved, the Sprints are set to be very open battles.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-1.jpg

When i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Cardoso started the race, he might have looked at today as a stage win possibility in the sprint. His crash in Stage 1 appears to have changed his prorities though, as instead he goes into today's breakaway with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Demare, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Kochetkov and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Krasilnikau.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-2.jpg

All 4 lost time yesterday - and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Kochetkov was involved in that same crash as Cardoso. For some reason, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/pvb_zpsc75e654c.png Cardoso is the only rider not interested in the sprints.

That's good news for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Demare, who wins the first two fairly comfortably.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-3.jpg

But the Frenchman goes for a drink just before the 3rd sprint, giving i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Kochetkov the opportunity to win something.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-4.jpg

Cardoso finally shows some interest in scoring today when we reach the climb, but still he comes away empty handed. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Krasilnikau takes the points to move 3rd in the competition - still led by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Ilias.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-5.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Prio-Porto, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/anc_zps34cc1374.png ANC-Halfords and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Risa-Ergon have been in charge of the peloton today and the break is well within reach at 20km to go, with just a minute's lead.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-6.jpg

And shortly after 10km to go, the break is caught.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Sutton was all but anonymous in taking 16th in Stage 1 so Risa have decided to do better and create a leadout for him today. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Rake, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Hagen and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Kristoff are his train, and they ride unchallenged at the front of the peloton.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Rizza, for some reason i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/anc_zps34cc1374.png Appleby and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Ciocan look to follow, with the other sprinters further back.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-8.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Kristoff opens the sprint as the road hits just a 2% gradient with 2.3km to go. Hill hater i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Gavazzi is right up there alongside Rizza.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-9.jpg

And it looks like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Gavazzi has taken Sutton's wheel, pushing i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Rizza and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Ciocan back.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/anc_zps34cc1374.png ANC have another chaotic leadout attempt, while again i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Prio are also doing badly with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Martins to far ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Duque, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Belletti and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Abakoumov follow Santos, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Silvestre and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Appollonio are also floating around up here.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-10.jpg

Having won i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Sutton's wheel, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ekc_zps98eb3bbc.png Gavazzi quickly loses it and this gives the Australian a big lead as he starts his own sprint.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos has been forced to launch a long pursuit again but while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Duque tracks him, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Belletti is riding off in a different direction.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-11.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Duque is looking good as he moves into 2nd to chase Sutton, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Ciocan also well placed to try to defend his race lead.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-12.jpg

Can i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Sutton hold on?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-13.jpg

Forget Duque, because i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Dall'Antonia is really on a charge now. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Rizza looking quick too as he tries the opposite of his early sprint on Stage 1.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-14.jpg

The Italian pair rapidly close down on Sutton, who starts to celebrate early ...

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-15.jpg

... but it is a justified celebration as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/reg_zpsf2e631b7.png Sutton just holds on for the victory!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/altjo2-16.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Dall'Antonia takes 2nd, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Rizza 3rd and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Duque 4th.

5th place for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Ciocan and while Sutton is now on the same time as him, the Romanian has a better finishing position aggregate so keeps the lead. He also remains leader of the Points classification.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos was 6th, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/anc_zps34cc1374.png Nelson 7th to take the lead in the U25 competition and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Abakoumov 8th with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/vtf_zps1d97281a.png Tiainen and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mag_zpsa8a946c8.png Belletti completing the Top 10.

No splits today, although a group including yesterday's Top 10 finisher i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Irvine did come very close to losing time.
