March Rankings Update

The season is well underway now, after 18 more races in March. Those races were won by 15 different teams - with the rankings points being more evenly spread out than previous months.

Allianz-BMW and Kappa-Eni both won 2 C2 classics, but the leading pointscorers of the month were Tinkoff after they won two C1 stage races: Algarve and Sochi. With a monthly points per race day average of nearly 40, March certainly went well for the Russians.

The next best 4 teams all have a C1 or HC stage race victory to their names, and are all expected to be promotion contenders: Bouygues Telecom, ING, Bpost and Bintang.

Despite not winning any races, Banco Nacional de Costa Rica and Die Berg Komt Er were the leading CT points scorers this month.

Hollister remain the leaders, but they are increasingly coming under threat. It is only thanks to Taiwan that they do lead, because Rothaus did briefly manage to overhaul them following the E3 Prijs classic.

ING and Tinkoff have climbed into the promotion spots, with Bpost and Bouygues also on the rise. Jaguar are the 3rd new entry into the Top 10 after this month. Of the 3 who fall out, Pivovarna Lasko remain close in 11th, HTC are down to 15th and WWE have slipped 12 places down to 17th - their fast scoring early start having come to an abrupt halt.

Tinkoff are the biggest climbers, up 11, but after Alarcon finally delivered a victory Bintang also have a large jump - up 10 for them. Only they and Alstom have managed to move up into the Top 20.

CSC, Oz, Amex and Lukoil have all managed to nove out of the relegation zone this month, Repsol are the only team who failed to do so and they can be found languishing at the foot of the table. Meiji, Evian and Armavia should certainly be concerned to find themselves now in the bottom 5 because all raced quite a lot during the month, while Swedbank have slipped into the final relegation spot.

Tinkoff have leaped up to the top of the points per race day table, highlighting their current good form. Only Volkswagen have used less race days than them, and yet the Russians are already in a promotion spot.

Volkswagen are 2nd in the standings. A PpRD score of 26 is good, but not quite as good as the 36 they had last month. Rothaus and Hollister prove that their top places in the standings are well deserved, while 9 team now have a 20+ PprD - up on 8 from last month.

At the bottom end, the 5 teams currently in the relegation zone are in the worst 6 PpRD positions - only Swedbank escape out, swapping places with LukOil.

We have a new leader in the Individual rankings after Timofey Kritskiy scored a victory in the Tour of Sochi and 2nd overall in the Corsica International. Hoffman slips to 2nd while a dominant Taiwan performance sees Efimkin into 3rd.

Taaramae and Alarcon have entered the Top 10 - their usual home in the Individual standings, while Vantomme is finally earning his worth for Rothaus as he too moves into the Top 10 places.

Team Gazelle are possibly the CT team with the highest proportion of C2 races on their calendar compared to C1 or HC, and it is so far working for them as they move to the top of the table. Victory in IWT Oetingen was their highlight of their month, and helped them to just hold off Kappa-ENI by 3 points.

There's no change in the promotion spots as Allianz, Iberia and Kenya Airways remain in place - but the Kenyans have lost the lead and now must look over their shoulder whith the likes of BNCR, Adira Isq and Die Berg Komt Er moving up.

Not a good month for MTN as they fall 8 places, and now find themselves at the bottom of a 5 point, 4 team scrap for 15th - currently edged by JK Cycling after their surprise C1 classic victory at Dwars Door Vlaanderen.

Dietmar Mehr-Wenige continues to lead the way in the Individual standings, as the debate continues over whether it is a good strategy for him to be largely focusing on C1 races. Just 25 points from the 9 race days of Gisborne and Taiwan clearly was not worth it, but scoring 139 in Adira's home race Volta ao Algarve has made up for that.

Scarponi also did well in Algarve, winning a stage, and victory in the Miguel Indurain classic has capped his month and lifted him into 2nd. Furdi is now the leading Gazelle rider in 3rd, while the arrival of the cobbles has helped lift Steegmans up into 4th place, and Maes into 8th.

The surprise of Kwita Izina Markus Eibegger scored 109 points there, and is now up to 11th in the standings, just behind teammate Rohregger.

There was plenty of race days in Asia however with the long and important stage races in Langkawi and Taiwan. It was Taiwan which had the biggest impact on the top of the table, with Cisco taking the lead and Hollister following them into 2nd. Davis is also up to 2nd for Hollister in the Individual standings, as Efimkin extended his lead there.

Europe Tour
The European continent is the most important due to the quantity of races, and Rothaus remain on top here - although they are just 6 points clear of Tinkoff, who have scored almost all of their ranking points in Europe.

Bpost are a distant 3rd, while Kappa are doing very well to be 4th - it would be a big effort for a CT team to finish in the Top 10 of the European standings by the end of the season, you would have thought. Gazelle are also currently in the Top 10.

Kritskiy moves to the top of the individual standings of course, as Pozzovivvo slips to 2nd and Geschke falls down to 9th. Alarcon, Vantomme and Cornu all had good months.

Pleased to stay on the top half of the table. Top 10 has always been out of question, so I'd be more than happy to stay where I am at the moment. Efimkin sitting 3rd in the individual ranking is a nice bonus.

Tinkoff are looking unstoppable. I'll be very surprised if they don't promote.

March was a good and busy month for us. We wont do a lot of racing in April, so we'll probably lose the number one spot.

But I think PpRD is much more interesting than current ranking.

Iberia are still leading in that regard, but they did see a decline from 22.1 end February, to 18.9 now. If that trend continues their superiority is over.
We dropped from 18.9 to 17.1, allowing the very stable (16.5 -> 16.6) Allianz to get close. Number four, Magna, had a good month and went from 13.3 to 14.8, which even saw them overtake the slightly faltering Kappa, who were on 16.2 and now on 14.6.

They don't need to worry though, as the number 6 is only on 11.2 But there are some teams that have greatly improved in March and might be closer to the top 5 next month.
