mind if I open a new thread? woops, I just did  . seeing as the Renault affair is done and dusted and of course Briatore was not punished (he never is despite all the dirty stuff he gets away with), the new season can begin!
and there's two big pieces of news:
1. With Renault knowing where it stands, Alonso will sign in the next few days, with only a very slight chance that he'll sign for Red Bull. his teammate is slated to be Nélson Piquet Júnior, with Renault taking a gamble on the young brazillian's decent talent, which they've been reluctant to do so far because of his enormous attitude problems. basically, his own mind goes "Me > Universe"
2. The new circuit at Portimão in the Algarve region will be ready in mid-to-late 2008 and quite a few teams have already pledged it as their testing circuit for 2009 and onwards due to Portimão having a similar climate and much better facilities. this has a big impact.
aside from random tests at Fiorano by Italian Ferrari and at Silverstone by the other teams (who are based in England), tests are in Spain, at Jerez, Valencia, or most usually, Barcelona. with them shifting to Portimão, the spanish racing sponsors will disappear, with the consequence of motorsports funding in Spain taking quite a big tumble.
that plus the fact that spanish young talent in other racing series seems to be little, looks like spelling the doom for spanish motorsport.
also, this should be an interesting season, with the usual suspects, plus Renault wanting to bounce back, BMW likely improving, and Honda definitely improving immensely due to their state-of-the-art wind tunnel finally being well-calibrated.

I had no idea Bourdais was coming to F1, I guess that goes to show how much I have been paying attention to Formula 1 this season.
Why isn't Fisichella racing anymore?

For the 2nd season in a row he said that he had at least 2 contract offers... Last year he rejected them because they were from weak teams... This year he said he had 2 contract offers from teams who would be in the strugle for points in every race but it seems like he is going to spend yet another season out of the F1 circus...

1) If i were mclaren, i'd go with the finn. How bout ralf? i know its a dark horse, but why not.
2) If i was air force india, i'd go with the money.
As far as the season goes, i will have to go with hamilton winning it all this year. |

why not? 3 reasons:
1. he has nothing near the required talent level
2. he's old

I said recent years. he got basically as many points as Jarno since he's been at Toyota and was horribly outshot in qualifying (which is central to Toyota as a marketing tool).
as for the paycut, as I've said, he refuses to take one.
he offered himself to McLaren but of course McLaren don't want him. he's old and there are much better alternatives.
his only shot is DTM, and that's if he doesn't think he's too good to go there, which he likely does

Heikki Kovalainen confirmed as a McLaren driver today in the best option (in my book).
Ralf bounced back in 2005 from the crash at the USGP the previous season but in 2006 and 2007 he's gone backward.
True Toyota didn't have a good season this year, Trulli with 8 points and Ralf with 5.
Toyota obviously have had to make a choice between the two and they have, Ralf's salary was quite frankly a disgrace. A little more than 3 times Massa's and 5 times Webber's, is it any wonder no team wanted him? |

McLaren admission ends F1 spy row
McLaren are free to race next season after the spy row which clouded this year's campaign was brought to an end.
F1's governing body the FIA cancelled a hearing into the legality of McLaren's 2008 car after the Woking-based team issued an apology.
They admitted that leaked Ferrari data was more "widely disseminated" within their camp than previously suspected.
McLaren were fined £50m and lost their constructors' points in September for possessing a 780-page Ferrari document.
They have apologised to governing body the FIA, which has cancelled a hearing into the legality of the 2008 McLaren.
A statement said: "In the light of McLaren's public apology and undertakings, the FIA president (Max Mosley) has asked the members of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) for their consent to cancel the hearing scheduled for 14 February 2008 and, in the interests of the sport, to consider this matter closed."
Mosley's request to the WMSC has been accepted, meaning McLaren can race next year without fear of additional penalties and the F1 "spy-gate" can be brought to a close.
The FIA's response came after McLaren said they would freeze development of three aspects of their 2008 design which may have been derived from the Ferrari document.
The FIA's investigation into the design of the 2008 McLaren concluded that the team were planning to use systems which "appear to have been developed by McLaren as a result of the receipt of confidential Ferrari information".
Ferrari have concurred with Mosley's approach but are still to pursue the matter through the courts, both in Italy and England.
A Ferrari statement said: "In the light of McLaren's apology, and the guarantees it has presented, Ferrari respects the proposal of the FIA president to cancel the extraordinary general meeting of the WMSC, thus bringing this incident to a close from a sporting point of view.
"However, it is confirmed that criminal actions are under way in Italy, and civil ones in England are still continuing."
In a statement, McLaren confirmed that the concerns of the sport's governing body, the FIA, over the use of the Ferrari data were legitimate.
"It has become clear that Ferrari information was more widely disseminated within McLaren than was previously communicated," the team said on its website.
"McLaren has written to the WMSC to apologise that it has taken an FIA investigation to find this information and have expressed our deep regret that our understanding of the facts was improved as a result of the FIA inspection rather than our own investigations."
Also Lewis Hamilton has had his driving license suspended for a month for speeding on a French motorway, he was clocked doing 196km/h (122mph) in a Mercedes near the northern town of Laon on Sunday. He was also ordered to pay a 600 euro (£430) fine.
The police described him as "co-operative and courteous", and said they gave him a lift to his hotel after impounding his vehicle.
The speed limit on French motorways is 130km/h (85mph).
