Welcome to the 2013 Ronde van Vlaanderen, one of the season’s monuments and arguably the toughest race on the calendar. There are 18.2km of cobbles and 18 hellingen which will determine the outcome. The final two climbs, and hence probably the most important are the Kappelmuur and the Bosberg, which peaks just 10km from the finish of this 255km course. This is sure to be one hell of a race, so let’s see things as they kick off with the first attacks of the day.
The first attack comes from Lloyd Mondory with the start line still in view behind the race.
He is followed by several more riders:
Jonathon Dufrasnes
Juan Gallego Martin
Maxim Belkov
Ronan Van Zandbeek
Then a new attack follows soon after:
Elia Favilli
Vegard Bugge
Andzs Flaksis
Sten Stenersen
Coen Vermelfoort
Serge Pauwels
Of course a group of 11 is far too large for the peloton, particularly with riders from several competitive teams here. As such the bunch runs this down but straight away many of the same names try again.
But this attack is obviously run down again. So this is a chance for several new riders... or of course the same names could just go again. This time six go:
Serge Pauwels
Jonathon Dufrasnes
Coen Vermelfoort
Juan Gallego Martin
Lloyd Mondory
Sten Stenersen
The peloton seem content to let this move go, but some other riders see a real chance here, leading to several new attacks. That said, Pokerstars and Pendleton’s Twicer both set a high pace to run down any bridging moves. The downside of this is that the pace is so high that the gap to the front group has dropped below 30 seconds. That just seems to be asking for even more attacks to bridge up so now three riders do just that:
Francis Mourey
Lars Petter Nordhaug
Juan Jose Haedo
All three of these bridge up and there are immediately several more attacks:
Serge Pauwels
Lloyd Mondory
Juan Gallego Martin
Sten Stenersen
Aidis Kruopis
In fact so strong is that is attack that they go straight past the break and the earlier bridging move, forming a new lead group of 5. The others are brought into the peloton by Anthony Geslin.
Things are far from decided though as there is now another attack, this time with some new names and some very dangerous teams:
Steven Cummings
Dimitri Claeys
Marco Zafferani
Guillaume Van Keirsbulck
Kenny Elissonde
Cristian Cominelli
Sebastian Einsle
Of course, with this many important teams, the group was never going to get away and it is down to Anthony Geslin to chase this one down too. He has been ever-present on the front so far today. Regardless, several riders try again:
Jonathon Dufrasnes
Dimitri Claeys
Marco Zafferani
Sebastian Einsle
With no one from Pendleton’s Twicer or Simply Red Bull here these four are allowed to join the front group, creating a break of 9. This inspires some others, however, and more look to join up to the front group:
Leopold Konig
Jocelyn Bar
Lars Petter Nordhaug
Jay McCarthy
13, however, is far too large for a break and as such Kevin Van Impe controls not just this move but in fact the entire break, as he drags in all but two riders, who manage to attack away. They are Sten Steneresen and Dimitri Claeys.
Now two groups decide that they will try their luck and look to join the front of the race. The first group contains:
Pavel Korzh
William Walker
Andzs Flaksis
Jocelyn Bar
Francisco Javier Echarri
And the second group contains:
Ronan Van Zandbeek
Steven Cummings
Vegard Bugge
Sebastian Einsle
Both groups join up with the two leaders and form a single 11 man group.
But of course there can be no relenting with this pace as Pokerstars, Bacardi and Simply Red Bull look to shut it down. Because of this several of the riders in the break look to get away, but none of the attacks will stick. As the group is about to be caught, however, Sebastian Einsle manages to get away on his own.
A lone attacker seeks to go after him in the form of Piet Rooijakkers. He gets up to Einsle and seeing this, Sergei Kolesnikov bridges up on his own as well. The peloton is happy with this group, as it is only 3 riders and none of them come from particularly dangerous teams on this sort of terrain. As such with 83km of this race already behind it, the race has its break of the day.
So now let’s have a look at the first part of this course, before we really get down to the grit of the racing. There is a short cobbled section before the fairly calm Nokereberg but then four cobbled sections come in quick succession, which should start to string the race out and hurt some legs. After that comes a fairly long flat run before we hit the main start of the racing – the tough Paddestraat kicks off just before another shorter cobbled section and the first of the tough hellingen – the Rekelberg.
Rooijakkers leads the break onto the first cobbled section of the day. The leaders have a gap of 4’39” with 142km still to ride. Back in the peloton, Aulas had fallen but got back easily. Geslin leads the peloton on, not lifting the face to any particularly difficult rate, perhaps taking a break after the difficult early riding today.
Just before the second cobbled section of the race it is clear t hat not everyone wants to take this easy as we get another attack – Sep Vanmarcke this time! Once it becomes clear that he has a gap Kevin Fouquet follows him. The two Belgians manage to pull out two minutes really quickly as the peloton just sits up for the moment.
With their attack proving remarkably successful, it was inevitable that others would see a big chance here and so we get an attack from Matteo Trentin just as the final one of the series of four cobblestone sections is completed. This is a great move for him as he might not be able to stay with the best any other way.
He is not alone, however, as four more riders follow him, all of them good on the hard terrain:
Luke Rowe
Jempy Drucker
Remco Broers
Sebastian Langeveld
A great move from all of these riders really. Rowe and Broers are doing this to stop their teams having to work for Blythe and Vanspeybrouck respectively. Drucker isn’t good enough on the hills to be able to rely on sticking in the favourites group and Langeveld can stay here while Pozzato sits in the group if it comes to a sprint.
Both of the groups of attackers successfully bridge up to the front group and suddenly there are 10 leaders, including 7 really strong cobblestone riders. If there was any doubt about this being an incredibly fast Ronde, then this should dispel that illusion. With 105km to go the lead is at 5’20”.
The race continues over a couple more cobbled sections and we reach the first climb of the day, the Rekelberg. Classics stalwart Kevin Van Impe leads the bunch onto it 5’09” behind the breakaway. The pace is high and already 26 riders are dropped, with no major names included.
So let’s see what the second half of the course has in store for the riders. 15 more climbs lie ahead of them and a matching 15 cobbled sections are there as well, with some of those climbs being cobbled too. The Kappelmuur and the Bosberg are the two final climbs and may be absolutely crucial for determining the winner, as the Bosberg peaks 10km from the finish.
And here is a sight which will become familiar – the break head onto the first of the cobbled climbs, the Kruisberg. It is fairly gentle by the standards of this race but it is by no means easy. Most of the work is being done by those riders who bridged up to the move, who stand to gain the most here today.
And already some legs are hurting, as Rooijakkers and Kolesnikov drop from the lead group. This course is just too tough for them and is really taking its toll.
Those two riders keep pedalling on and not a lot happens for a little while with just a small amount of attrition hitting the peloton. However, with about 70km to go to break hit a truly terrifying sight – the Koppenberg. This legendary climb hits 22% at one point and is cobbled most of the way up. Rowe leads the break on.
Einsle drops from the break, clearing having had enough of this.
Back in the peloton, Simply Red Bull have really started to set a cracking pace in the lead up to the Koppenberg and the race is down to just 89 riders in this main bunch. No favourites have been dropped but some teams are looking a bit thin in terms of their domestiques.
And up the Koppenburg the pace remains incredibly high and already there is a massive rupture in the bunch as three main groups form!
The first group has 24 riders including:
Sam Bewley
Tom Boonen
Fabian Cancellara
Vladimir Gusev
Adam Blythe
Evert Verbist
Frederick Nolf
Andrew Fenn
Some teams are well represented here as there are 7 Simply Red Bull riders, 5 from both Pokerstars and Pendleton’s Twicer and 3 from Wiggle.
The second group consists of 14 riders including:
Nick Nuyens
Filippo Pozzato
Danny Summerhill
Alessandro Ballan
Enrico Franzoi
Pieter Vanspeybrouck is also riding onto the back of this group.
A 39 man group forms behind that and the two biggest names in there are Marcus Burghardt and Geert Steurs.
Sensing a chance to really string things out and reduce the strength of competition Sam Bewley gets onto the front of the lead group as the race hits the next cobbled section, the very long Mariaborrestraat.
His attempt is unsuccessful however as most of the second group joins up, including all the favourites that were in there as well as the chasing Pieter Vanspeybrouck, who just managed to get in. Similarly, realising that they were poorly placed both Marcus Burghardt and Geert Steurs attack out of the third group and put in a mighty effort to rejoin the leaders. This leaves the race with a lead group of 37 riders.
With 60km to go the race hits the Eikenberg, a fairly gentle cobbled climb but with the pace this high even gentle climbs can kill legs. Frederick Nolf hits the front of the shattered peloton and reduce the numbers still further, leaving us now with 28 riders.
And Geert Steurs has been dropped! He had just chased back on so was hurting and poorly placed at the back of the group. He will have a fight ahead of him as the race really seems on now.
The 28 riders still in this main group are:
Boonen, Nolf, Van Impe, Kluge, Geslin
Cancellara, Sibilla, Turgot, Aulas, Vangheel
Gusev, Mertens, Rast
Bewley, Verbist
Summerhill, Eeckhout
Nuyens, Wynants
Blythe, Fenn
Ballan
Kruijswijk
Burghardt
Kozontchuk
Vanspeybrouck
Franzoi
Pozzato
As it happens Steurs comes around some of the dropped riders and tags onto the back again, though these efforts must really be killing him.
The race now hits the 1.5km long Holleweg cobblestone section and almost straight away Burghardt comes onto the front, realising that he needs to start to isolate some of those leaders who have a lot of teammates around them.
And he pulls several riders clear! Once again we have a big split with some favourites missing out. This new group is:
Cancellara, Sibilla
Boonen, Nolf
Burghardt
Ballan
Bewley
Gusev
Summerhill
Behind these 9 riders a chase group of 4 forms. They are:
Blythe, Fenn
Nuyens
Kruijswijk
Wiggle will be disappointed that neither of their co-leaders made this cut, though with Rowe in the break they still have a third card to play. Kruijswijk is also an unexpected inclusion here, outperforming the expectations of almost everyone. He is struggling to hang on, though, and may drop back to the next group. Anyway, another chase group of three form behind this quartet:
Vanspeybrouck
Franzoi
Pozzato
Now the first of these three groups hits the long Kerkgate section, which is also slightly hilly. Seeing a real opportunity Bewley and Gusev power away and get a gap on their select group.
Setting off in pursuit this time are only 4 of the 7 riders. Cancellara, Burghardt, Summerhill and Boonen chase hard, leaving Sibilla, Nolf and, surprisingly, Ballan behind.
With only a few cobbled sections left and most of the toughest part of the course behind them, with 48km to go there is a slight lull, allowing us to get some solid time gaps. Here is how things sit:
Break
+2’33” - Bewley, Gusev
+29” – Cancellara, Burghardt, Summerhill, Boonen
+32”- Sibilla, Nolf, Ballan
+27” - Blythe, Fenn, Nuyens
+41” - Vanspeybrouck, Franzoi, Pozzato, Kruijswijk
+42” – Gr. Steurs (11 riders)
The Blythe group catches up to the Ballan group and form a strong chase group of 6, though only 4 of those riders are going to contribute anything at all.
Meanwhile, we get the first news from the breakaway for quite some time. It becomes obvious that Rowe and Fouquet are struggling on the cobbled Molenberg. They hold on, but it may just be a matter of time before they are dropped, particularly if there is a new injection of pace.
These two aren’t the only ones struggling on the Molenberg, as Summerhill loses contact with the Boonen and Cancellara group.
Others see the Molenberg as a great launching point, as Blythe attacks his chasing group to try to bridge up solo. Neither Nuyens nor Ballan choose to go with him, perhaps too fatigued.
Finally we get some change up front as first Bewley and Gusev then the group of Boonen catch up to the break just as the 2km Haaghoek cobbled section starts, which takes us to the base of the 14th climb of the day, the Leberg. That gives us 12 riders in the lead group.
Summerhill is almost 1’30” behind and Blythe is another minute behind him. The other chase groups are within 2 minutes of Blythe.
But up front things explode as defending champion Boonen puts in his assault over the cobbles. There are still 40km to ride!
Setting off in pursuit as the race hits the Leberg it is Gusev and Bewley. Boonen has 30 seconds on them, however, and they must shut this down!
Meanwhile the rest of the chasers seem to sit up a bit, as if acknowledging that they are all just too tired from a high-paced day with constant attacks and chasing. This allows first Blythe then Ballan and Nuyens to catch up. The chase is renewed but it is clear that no one here has the strength to really bring the attackers back. That isn’t to say that they have no pace, however, as both Fenn and Nolf are dropped from here.
Boonen goes over the small but tough Tenbosse with a minute gap over the two chasers and then a further four minutes to the group behind. It is clear that these three will be our podium placers unless something drastic happens on the final two crucial climbs.
Pozzato succeeds in dropping both Franzoi and Vanspeybrouck and catches up to the growing peloton.
Boonen cuts a formidable figure as he hits the peak of the Kappelmuur, still maintaining his minute advantage over the two behind him. Bewley is doing a lot of the work here behind.
The fight hasn’t quite gone out of the chasing peloton however, as a big attack goes. Cancellara puts in a dig and he is followed by Burghardt and Blythe.
And it is a great attack, as these three get 40” on the bunch they attacked out of. This group might be fighting it out for 4th-6th places if no one can spare the energy to chase them down.
Onto the final climb, the cobbled and steep Bosberg, and Boonen in fact extends his lead up the climb. He is looking marvellous out there and it clearly isn’t for a lack of trying from the two chasing him, as Bewley succeeds in gaping Gusev. The New Zealander just has to maintain his gap on the descent and he is guaranteed second place.
Next over the Bosberg are the three chasers who had attacked out of the peloton. But disaster strikes as Blythe punctures at literally the worst moment imaginable!
There’s no sticking around for the other two. They would have struggled to beat Blythe in a sprint, but now it will be between the two of them to take fourth place.
Back in the pack, after a concerted chase Vanspeybrouck, Nolf and Fenn join on, making our ‘peloton’ into 16 riders. Some clearly don’t like their odds of getting a top ten with this many others around them so Pozzato and Nuyens make an attempt to get away on the Bosberg.
It is unsuccessful, however, and they must sit in the group on the descent.
Up front the man of the day goes under the kite. It has been an emotional day for Belgian fans, as it looked like their days could be stolen by a New Zealander and a Russian, but their hero looks to make it his seventh win in this race. Tom Boonen makes the final turn to rapturous applause.
And he raises a solitary arm, the exhaustion washing away from him in the elation of victory.
1’13” later Sam Bewley crosses the line. Some would argue that he was the strongest today but just went too early. Vladimir Gusev is behind him in third place, probably salvaging his season with this result.
Fabian Cancellara will have to content himself with fourth place as he outsprints Marcus Burghardt, who may well be pleased with that result given the year that he has been having.
The peloton starts to wind up their sprint and it becomes apparent that some riders have kept a little bit in reserve as it looks like they might even overhaul Blythe. Matteo Trentin puts in a mighty sprint, despite having spent the better part of the day in the break, but Adam Blythe realises the danger and manages to just beat him to the line, salvaging sixth place in the process. Trentin takes seventh.
Filippo Pozzato takes a very satisfying eighth place ahead of Frederick Nolf, who could clearly conserve some energy with his team leader up ahead of him for most of the last part of the race. Michel Sibilla rounds out the top ten, which will probably make up for Cancellara not hitting the podium.
And that completes an absolutely magnificent version of the Ronde van Vlaanderen. The favourites were really up for making this an interesting race and the strong break that formed just before the half way mark of the race really ensured that this would be hammer-and-tongs the whole way to the line. The Belgians will be pleased with their home victory, perhaps the last that the king of the cobbles will be capable of. Riders are still coming in just over half an hour later and that isn’t even counting the riders who had to drop out, of which there were six (listed below).
