I don't know if this has been brought up, but a chat would be useful. This way during a race we could chat instead of filling up a big thread.

Bizarre that you call it "filling up" a big thread. It's not as if there is a space limit.

I don't really see a need for a separate chatbox, just seems a bit pointless

I've always worked towards making the forum the only way to communicate rather than having 10 different channels (Facebook, chatboxes, etc.).

This may seem illogical when it comes to race discussions, but it makes sense in the bigger picture. People would mix up the purposes of e.g. a chatbox and a forum if there were more choices - e.g. technical questions in a chatbox.
