The Series continues in Heerlen, where another flat stages awaits the riders. This time, it ain't a pan-flat one though:
a short speed bump of 4.6% slope may not hurt too many legs, but maybe one of the top-favorites... Theo Bos?!
Boy Van Poppel, winner of the opening race, Nico Schinker and Michael Vanderaerden all try to repeat their nice results from Wateringen, while especially Wouter Weylandt (8th) has to do better today.
The race kicks off with an attack by yesterday's winner Tom Criel (Topsport), who's joined by Joeri Adams (Lotto) and Bob Jungels (Vesuvio)!
Criel looks on fire and seems to try everything to battle for the overall win here in the Netherlands.
But as he's a real threat for the sprinters, the group was pulled back early.
Time for another try, this time by Dan Olivier (NedU23), who's way more aggressive than in the Belgian Crits.
He's joined by Bob Schoonbroodt (UPC) and Kim Kirchen (Lux), who has to prove that he still got the legs to perform well.
But it's just another short-lived attempt! As soon as Coen Vermeltfoort (Rabo) tried to catch up to the group, they got swallowed by the bunch quickly.
Vermeltfoort has one more try with 30km to go.
It ain't looking good for escapees today, as Vermeltfoort's attempt was empty-handed.
Halfway through the race, the pack is all together again.. and now Huub Duyn (Metec) tries to break clear on the speed bump!
Guess what?
One lap later, Duyn is back in the bunch, where Marco Minnard (Jo Piels) pulls the strings hard for his captain Van Hummel.
But of course the attacks won't stop: after another short-lived try by Jonas Vangenechten, it's Iljo Keisse (Bodysol) with a more serious attempt!
Keisse seems to prefer the attacking style instead of trying his luck in a bunch-sprint. A not too bad idea, as he already won a race in the Belgian Crits that way.
Klaas Sys (Accent) will definitely know Keisse's speed and joins his move a few moments later.
2 laps remaining (12km) and they establish a small gap of 15"..
And this move causes his first victim: in an overanxious bunch, where several teams tried to move their sprinters to the front, a crash happens!
And it's no less a figure than one of the top-favorites - Michael Vanderaerden (Nomadesk)! And more riders crash into him..
Nico Schinker is down as well! Bad luck for both and this riders involved:
Schinker, Vanderaerden, Möhlmann, Dumoulin, Brus, Van Aelbroeck, Decouttere, Hofland, Kos.
There's no chance to catch up to the high pacing bunch.
And back to the front, things have changed again! Keisse/Sys got caught by the bunch, but on the final speed bump, Jetse Bol (Rabo) "diesels" away!
A real surprise for the remaining top-sprinters it seems. Rabobank did react nicely on the fact, that Theo Bos suffered today. And Bol is aiming for a sensational victory..
He holds on to a 9"-gap on the now sprinting bunch, where Weylandt (Lotto), Van Hummel (Piels) and Van der Lijke (NedU23) dominate and try to bridge the gap.
Bol looks tired from his attack and struggles to even sprint!
Weylandt seems to have no problems to shake off Van Hummel and Van der Lijke.
And close to the finish-line, Bol is overtaken by the three. The remaining bunch is still too far behind though!
And it's an easy win for Wouter Weylandt, ahead of a strong Kenny Van Hummel! Well done.
Boy Van Poppel was clearly the fastest in the end, beating Van Lijke for last podium spot. He will take the GC-lead thanks to this 3rd.
Jetse Bol finishes on a well deserved 5th, followed by some "non-sprinters": Stallaert (well, Boeckmans did better so far), Vandousselaere, Wynants, Veyt, Ten Dam.
