Some cobbles would affect todays route - but how much?

Albert, Ista, Blanco and Dockx attacked, but Albert and Ista moved away on the first hill. It may not have been cobbled, but their cobbled stats certainly helped - promising lots of fun for the peleton today.

Albert tops Saint-Sauveur having already won the first climb, KoM jersey is coming Albert's way today.

The Saint-Sauveur climb had a dramatic impression on the peleton as during the following long flat section, it split up until as they headed towards the Oude Kwaremenont: Albert and Ista held a 3'35 lead over this group of 20:

Who themselves held a 2'42 gap over a peleton of 93 riders. Wiggins, Talingii, Vansummeren, Pluschin, Traksel, Meirhaeghe, Commesso, Farrar and Lowik are just some of the riders in there.

Wiggins gets dropped on the Kwaremont though:

So Letua do the un-sensible thing, and drop Hammond and Wellens back to help - although they remain around 20 seconds ahead of Wiggins on the road. Bobbie Traksel is also dropped as the group falls to 14 riders. Up to 16 again soon, as Albert and Ista are caught.

Gerben Lowik wins the intermediate sprint.

But the group lacks enthusiasm and a gap of 1'43 to a chasing group of 34 with 19km to go, falls to nothing in just 5km. Nico Mattan is instrumental in the chase.

This leaves a group of 36 up front - Wiggins is not amongst them and the current virtual leader is Jens Voigt - albeit he is struggling a little.

Nico Mattan has only joined the front group for a couple of kilometres before he attacks with Designa's Mortensen and Marco Polo's Franzoi.

This could be dangerous and the reaction is slow.

With 2.2km to go Traksel leads Lowik but it seems pointless, Mattan is too far ahead.

Traksel does come past Mortensen and Franzoi, but Nico Mattan is going to take victory!

Traksel goes 2nd, with Van Heeswijk edging out Lowik for 3rd. Abakoumov and Casper are 8th and 10th and can only blame themselves for bad positioning. Hermans, Voigt, Sutherland and Vitoria get very lucky with time gaps and do not lose time when they should have. Voigt is therefore stilll a big favourite for the race overall, if new leader Nico Mattan cannot master the hills.
