Suggestions for Cyanide for next Pro Cycling Manager Game
shadow80
I was thinking about making a thread of suggestions for the pro cycling manager game for perhaps Cyanide to consider.

I know one would be definitely to either straight up increase the number of race days in the year before there's a penalty to the race fitness numbers or to create a staggered system of the number of race days a rider can do in a year based upon their experience level or receive a race fitness/training improvement penalty.

For example,

Level 1 = 30-40 days (pick a number between for the concrete number)

Level 2 = 40-55 days

Level 3 = 55-65 days

Level 4 = 65-80 days

To deal with the fact that a rider will go over 30-40 race days at level one and THEN promote, there could be a potential downgrade. For instance, instead of having potentials at 1-8, make it 0-85 and then for every two racing days over the limit, downgrade the potential by 1-3 points.

The reason for this staggered system is that in real life, it can be and probably is very hard on a young rider to ride so many race days in an entire year and tends to increase the chances of burnout or early retirement.

Never mind my past gripe about there being a penalty for a non-sprinter sprinting for points during stage races such as the Giro. When I thought about it, I realized that it was nitpicking and not a real legitimate gripe.

Any other ideas about changing the mechanics of the system? I wanna hear more because I'm curious about what people think and it definitely could be used to make the game more realistic for Cyanide to make.

On a side note, I'm encouraged that Cyanide decided to keep their patch release time short this year and focus early on making the game workable and GREAT next year.

NO NO NO! No new features until the old ones have been fixed!

what really needs to be fixed is something they won't do because it wouldn be appealing when shouting out the "new features" and because it would take an enormous amount of work.

it's the game's mechanics. they need to be changed because they don't work. namely the scale can't be 1:10. it needs to be bigger. the way it is now, it sucks. especially when there are small hills. this makes gameplay sucky in quite a few occasions, most notably the cobbled classics with hills.

they first have to perfectionize everything what they already have from the last pcm and then they should think about new features

Cyanide will make exactly the same mistakes in 08 that were fixed by patches this year, which were fixed by patches the year before, which were...Rolling Eyes

I'd say leave the 3D engine alone, apart from altering the scale (which they won't do), and completely re haul the management system. My expectations are low

please give me 1 on 1 scale but then with x16 and x32 speed!!!! would make it much more realistic.

with PCM's graphics you'd need a PC from the year 2010 for it to run at 512x with full graphics

As far as I remember, you couldn't watch the game when at 512x. You were in some sort of menu where you could see how many kilometers that had been ridden.

that would be the option, but the transitions from 3D to that menu and back would likely be slow, since it of course would have to come back every time something important happened.

and now the kicker. anyone up for creating stages ten times the size of the current ones?

Well, there's no point in discussing it. Cyanide is not going to change it - that's like 99,9 % sure.

didn't a new team of programmers jump in to replace the old one? hopefully they'll do a very improved job, as anything else is....well, I don't want to get into the french education system, but let's just say that french computer engineers hold a far from high reputation in the business Rolling Eyes

and I doubt the canadian studio will be doing the new PCM

Don't think so. They said that they had changed some routines which would make the next game better, but I guess I'll have to see that if I am to believe it.

True, but thats allright since you only take it over 128x when nothing is happening anyway.

They need to make breakaways more realistic. Since the breakaways ALWAYS get caught by the peleton or GC candidates. In the Grand Tours the GC winner is the mountain points winner 95% of the time.

Well I for one , have stuck with the same philosophy since 07 was released. Let's face it....It was a train wreck of epic proportions. There are a few good things to come out of it though. I like the fact that each team has its own folder. Secondly, some of the improvements to Management. However having said that the list of desired improvements and fixes is endless.
I hated the interface. The minimaillots were very prevalent in 2006, but hardly distingishable in 2007. My PC is good. I had everything for 2006 set on maximum and never had an issue. I played 07 for 10 days and havent been able to launch it since. Really worth the $50 US I paid out. The so called "beta testing" they did on 07 is mind boggling. A game with so many obvious flaws which affected hundreds of users, somehow made it to the shelves for sale. Where's quality control????
I detest the system of timing and in a lot of cases lack of it. I'd like to see something in the interface that gives me rider times. For all riders, in all conditions. Especially a time trial!!!!. In a major tour for example, I'd like to know what times gc riders and my immediate opposition are doing on the course, during a time trial, so I know if I should push my team a little more. The final time trial in this years TDF proved decisive for Contador and Evans, as did the 1989 time trial in Paris between Fignon and Lemond. They both had time checks throughout the "race of truth" as given to the by their team manager. Where is that in Pro Cycling Manager????? Where is that system and where is the tension and the decision making???
I hated the fact that half the important game files were suddenly in another directory on C drive. Who in the hell thought that was good idea??? I know Im in a very small percentage of the community but I would like to see a major improvement in GRAPHICS. Especially how the 3D is done. I hate the fact that most of it is 1 image and everything is mirrored. So you have 1 good side and everything else is backwards. Examples, bikes, cars, scenery, buildings, service stations...you get the idea.
Once again Miya proved that there are better ways of doing things and he didnt spend a year trying to do them.No other gaming company I know of does this. Its outdated technology they're using. This is 3D Modelling about 10 years ago.
Miya's work as a whole has made Cyanide's Designers look ordinary and I really hope they step up to the plate if not next year then in the years to come. At least if they cannot match him for quality and dont have the skills in their office, then at least need to consider paying him to upgrade the game for them. I hate the finish line and loath the scaling like everyone else. It just looks crappy to see a 5 km to go banner within sight of the finishing straight . Most of the graphics files are dynamic, which makes it a nightmare to try and develop different layouts. So many of these files are strangely distorted. Why?
With the TDF starting in "La Bretagne" region in 2008 and Monaco in 2009 there needs to be major improvements in the visual components. I would like to see new mocap. New animations and for god sake , change the look of the riders!!!. Im a bit sick of the "stick figures". 3D Image mapping has gotten to the point now where every imperfection in the human body can be rendered into a perfect 3D image. They need to discover POSER. My understanding of game development, is that each new release is supposed to be in theory a new phase or "next generation", if you will. I look at what all the major players in gaming are doing and they usually take their genres to the next level, rather than adopting Cyanides policy of keeping the "status quo" and producing what ultimately is in reality "a big friggen patch" each year.
I'm thrilled that there is actually a game in the market place that caters for cycling enthusiasts. However, the enthusiasm for playing this repetitious game is declining. My message to Cyanide is simply this..add some new components each year and make it more of a joy and a challenge to play. Both those elements are currently missing. Make it playable on all platforms with minimum specification so people dont have to go out and buy another 1GB RAM and a new grapichs card, then wait weeks for 10 patches to make the game playable. You made 2006 work for most people, why was 07 such a drama??? Its not as if they remolded the entire game and intergrated new engines for everything. "Old habits die hard.." but so do games that dont progress with the times. Word will spread and you'll sell more product. Refine your processes and produce quality not quantity. Fail to follow these simple rules. You'll be out of business within 3 - 5 years.
I had no knowledge of Cyanide's existence before I Googled for "Cycling Products" one afternoon last year. They appear from the outside to be a pretty faceless impersonal type of organisation. What would be appreciated is more interaction with the company and more information on the progress they're making each month. Even a representative to jump on a forum one afternoon a week and answer questions. At least inform the community of your intentions, your progress and the hurdles you face. Goto an EA, Microsoft, Interactive, Blizzard, Activision site and there is heaps of information on upcoming releases. You can read details from the developers themselves on where they are in process and even to some extent write in opinions and feedback. Maybe Im ignorant, but I dont see that anywhere from such a small gaming company. PR is crucial to the survival of any small organisation. Only 1 month before the game is released some faceless dude comes out on a forum and tells us what's to expect, but then what is actually delivered is 2 completely different things.
