Thats a not very impressive list from Sky. That's just a cobbles team.
I guess even Eddy can't beat Sagan though. |

Cancellara will be looking to attack at the end again. I reckon it is his year.

EBH + Thomas is still decent in my mind.
And what do you mean? There are people that can beat Sagan, possibly even EBH on his day.

So true. When EBH is on form, He is so strong. I think he could have a chance in a bunch sprint.

I don't think its so much about winning for Sky as it is about testing themselves. They really want a cobbled classic and are really going for it this season.
But if EBH is on form he (like really on form, TDF 2011 form) he could really put a challenge to anyone. And Thomas, and maybe Eisel, could provide a decent launch for him.
Best looking team so far is probably Quickstep. Cavendish is the best sprinter, and he has won before. Boonen should be in good form. After Tirreno who knows was Kwiatkowski can do. And i'm always think Chavanel can produce something.
Not too sure about MTN to be honest. Ciolek is a decent sprinter, but i don't see the support needed to feature heavily. But it will be great to see that jersey in a monument!
Prediction time:
Decisive Splits to come early! La Manie early (thats where most people give up)
Decisive move to come earlyish as well on the Cipressa. A number of riders from different teams, then no organised chase will leave it too late to catch them.
Winner: EBH (not because he is Sky, but because he is good and that bit of an outsider)
Podium: Cancellara and Chavanel

Since we are doing this I reckon
Winner-Fabian Cancellara
2nd-EBH
3rd-Pater Sagan or Chavanel

For me, it would have to be from a small group. In a bunch sprint, one of the more "pure" sprinters would have a better shot. But if it got into the same situation as Goss did in 2011 he'd have a shot.

I get the feeling that we won't see a bunch sprint in San Remo for a while now. The course and racing seems to be getting too tough for that. Instead a few riders will go away in the finale and take it like last year.
My tips:
1) Sagan
2) Nibali
3) Cancellara
3 great descenders who could keep away really nicely.

Have to say I really like Sagan for this, if the climbers attack I think he will (and can) follow. Then just sit on their wheels. Otherwise I think he also should be the favorite to take the sprint. I know Cav can perform, but not sure if the peloton gets forced to go over the climbs fast to catch up how much he will have left.
1: Sagan
2: Hushovd (watch out for the veteran)
3: Farrar (okay more of just a nod that he needs to do something to get back to being considered a top tier sprinter).

Totally agree with Kent. Sagan has to be the outright favourite. He has a good support base and can stick with the best on the climbs, and then flog them in a sprint. Essentially, because of his sprint and ability to climb the hills, he doesn't need to do anything but win. I'm thinking it'll be a reduced bunch, like the kick for 4th last year, and with probably roughly the same positioning...
My tips;
1- Sagan
2-Degenkolb (the only real decent sprinter with enough kick to get up the hills and have enough left to challenge Sagan. Form will be the only thing, not sure if he has it...)
3- Moser (Outside shot, but can belt it up the hill and would probably be Sagan's main help) |

You are forgetting that EBH, Goss amd some other sprinters can get over the hills very well too. EBH is going to be a main contender in a broken apart group

Quickstep really throwing everything for Cav. Will either work brilliantly, or fail miserably.
Ones to watch for me are obviously Sagan, Moser after his win at Bianche, Goss has a brilliant track record at San Remo and Cancellera. Obviously there are more riders, but these four should be right up there.
Hoping to see Gerrans get up again but after a illness riddled Paris Nice, complete opposite preparation than he had last year. |

No chance Cavendish is near the front after the Poggio, i expect crazy attacking race from all the strongest punchers/roulers to get rid of Sagan, they saw last year that is only chance against him.
My five favourites: Sagan, Nibali, Cancellara, Goss, Hushovd
I think this will be between Sagan and Nibali, it depends if Nibbles will be able to distance Peter in the descend, or top of the Poggio.
Dark horses: Ciolek, Chavanel, Degenkolb, EBH, Moser (but hard to see him being stronger than Sagan, maybe if Peter would fall).
Edit: Btw. Sagan said after the Tirreno TT, he is feeling worse and more ill, because of the bad weather and tough stages, hopefully he will be 100% fit on Sunday. Or he is playing nice role play (special mention for Ian).

Expecting Sagan to mark Nibali and Cancellara very closely. Only two riders I can see taking this away from him, as long as he doesn't get sick or falls / punctures.
Goss, Hushovd, Degenkolb, EBH, etc might stay in the front group over the Poggio, but none of them can match Sagan's speed in a sprint after that, imo. Possibly Goss if he has the sort of day he had two years ago, but otherwise no.
Can't see Sagan losing this no matter what. There are two scenarios I think could happen.
Either: Nibali, Cancellara or someone like that puts in a big attack on the Poggio. Sagan follows and outsprints the other attacker(s) at the finish.
Or: A little group comes down to San Remo together, with riders like Goss and EBH still there. It's a bit closer this time, but Sagan outsprints everyone and wins.

And i almost forgot one more dark horse, who could do maybe very well, Roelandts.
Pelli: I agree with your scenarios, there is also third scenario i think. Cancellara and Nibali attacks, Sagan could not respond and nobody will help him to catch them, because nobody is helping Sagan to bring him for a sprint with them. I hope this is not the case and Moser/Sagan will cover it all.

I guess that is theoretically possible
But honestly, I can't see him being unable to respond to any attack. We saw how strong he was on the awesome Tirreno stage, following Nibali while Contador, Froome, etc... couldn't. On short climbs like the Cipressa and the Poggio, he is hard to get rid of.
And as you say: with Moser, he has also that situation covered anyway.

No matter his talent, Sagan is no superman. Cycling history is filled with: "he couldn't lose... yet he did".
In a race with 180 riders, there is no certainty. Though I must say Cannondale is impressive with Sagan + Moser and Viviani.
I don't think Quickstep is throwing all on Cavendish, it's not a goal of him, like he said many, many times. They also have Chavanel, Boonen (might be too early for him, though, probably).
I have a feeling about Voeckler He still needs a monument!
Also, everyone knows how this race will go: boring until the Poggio, then an attack. Either it will succeed, or it won't. In that case, Sagan has much chance. But why not stir things up a little? Team attack on the Cipressa? |
