Hello all. I will be racing you through the grand tours of yesteryear. Beginning with the 2000 Giro d'Italia. I hope you enjoy following it. I will be playing anonomously so you won't know who I am until after the tour has finished, Unfortunately the 2000 db doesn't come with a Giro from that year so we will make do with one of the 2012 version (unless you all massively object). I shall begin properly in the next post... |

Stages 1 & 21 are both Individual Time Trials, stage 4 is a team time trial.

Reigning Champion - Ivan Gotti (Polti)
He's back to retain his title and is considered one of the strongest climbers in the field. His team are fairly strong but may loose time on the hill stages.
Runner Up 1999 - Paolo Savoldelli (Saeco)
He's going to try and give everyone the slip with his fierce aceleration but he may lack power in the mountains. He may be one of the stronger time trialists (out of the favourites) but his team is weak and are there to help Cipollini in the sprints.
3rd Place 1999 - Gilberto Simoni (Lampre)
One of the strongest climbers in this years giro, if not the strongest. This is his main asset and like most if the others time will be lost in the time trials and hills
Super Strong Team Mate - Stefano Garzelli (Mercatone)
Garzelli has Pantani to support him. Pantani decided yesterday that he was going to ride the giro for Garzelli. With Pantani helping you there are not many people who stand much of a chance. Although completely out of forme Pantani may end up taking the lead if something goes wrong.*
Simoni's Climbing Equal - Leonardo Piepoli (Banesto)
Some say he's the only one who will match Simoni. But this time when I say he's a bad time trialist I mean he's really bad. And his lack of attacking abaility won't help either. Piepoli has really got his work cut out if he wants to win the Giro this time around.
Suprise Package? - Dario Frigo (Fassa Bortolo)
With his power on thehills and in the time trials he will be able to put alot of time into the others. Its the mountains where he will have trouble trying to keep up with the others.
Julio Alberto Perez (Panaria)
Niklas Axelsson (Panaria)
Andre Noe' (Mapei)
Pavel Tonkov (Mapei)
Francisco Casagrande (Vini Caldirola)
Felix Cardenas (Kelme)
Jose Luis Rubiera (Kelme)
Fredy Gonzalez (Aguardiente Nectar-Selle Italia)
*Because of the situation in the 2000 Giro d'Italia I have edited Pantani's stats so that it is realistsic to what happened. He will have his stats so that he will support Garzelli
The fight for the red points jersey will be very interesting. It could be won by one of the favourites above, but then again it could be a sprinter as well. Here are the sprinters wanting to have a shot at tking this coveted jersey:
Mario Cipollini (Saeco)
Obviously the main contender with 29 stage wins in the giro before this edition and 2x points classification winner. His team are dedicated to him and Savoldelli. Can anyone beat Super Mario?
Robbie McEwen (Farm Frites)
People say he is the only one in this year's Grio that can get close to Cipollini. To have that confidence says alot about the Ozzie. At 27 he is at the prime of his career and hopes that he can take home the points classification which would make him the first non-european to do so.
Ivan Quaranta (Mobilvetta)
Super acceleration. Clearly the fastest accelerating man on a bike. But will he survive the cut off time? He can't abide mountains and although he may have terrifying acceleration many other sprinters are faster than him.
Other Sprinters Include...
Jan Svorada (Lampre)
Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo)
Jimmy Casper (FDJ)
Jeroen Blijlevens (Polti)
Dimitry Konyshev (Fassa Bortolo)

Aguardiente Nectar - Selle Italia: Perhaps looking for a man on the podium, maybe Fredy Gonzalez or Hernan Buenahora.
Amica Chips - Tacconi Sport: 22 year old Ivan Basso wants to prove he has what it takes to be a future great.
Banesto: With Piepoli, Mancebo and Baranowski they will be strong in the mountains and pushing for a podium.
Cantina Tollo: Danilo di Luca has a great chance of stage wins, proberbly not strong enough for GC.
Ceramica Panaria - Gaerne: Axelsson and Perez will be present at the front of the race. The team want a top 5 with one of them.
Farm Frites: All behind McEwen in the quest for stage wins and a potential points jersey.
Fassa Bortolo: Going in all guns blazing, Frigo for GC with Petacchi and Konyshev for the sprints.
Francaise des Jeux: Casper will challenge in the sprints, a real talent at 21 years old, Vogondy may try and get his hands on the white jersey as well.
Kelme - Costa Blanca: Felix Cardenas will go for GC with Jose Luis Rubiera and Sevilla as the main support. Others may look for breakaway stage wins in the mountains.
Lampre - Daikin: Simoni and Svorada will be out for GC and points. A mix of puncheurs and fighters will be the main support behind them.
Linda McCartney Racing Team: A very weak team. If they want to take anything out of this Giro then they will have to get in some breakaways.
Liquigas - Pata: Davide Rebellin has a good chance of taking a stage win. As does Honchar in one of the time trials. He may even get pink after the prologue.
Mapei - Quick-Step: Noe' and Tonkov lead for GC. Axel Merckx will definetly try for one of the stages in the hills.
Mercatone Uno - Albacom 2000: A full Italian team and Garzelli should be hard to beat with Pantani and Forconi in support.
Mobilvetta Design - Rossin: Italian sprinter Quaranta lead the squad looking for a flat stage win. A couple of the others may go for breakaway victories.
Rabobank: Erik Dekker will fight it out on the hills stages for the win. Other than that there only hope of anything is a breakaway.
Saeco: With Cipollini and Savoldelli they will be tough to beat anywhere. A stage win is almost certain.
Team Polti: Reigning champion Gotti will have half the team to help him as the others will be protecting their sprinter; Jeroen Blijlevens.
Vini Caldirola - Sidermec: Francesco Casagrande will be Rebellin's main challenger and he may have a shot at GC as long as his team keep him up there in the mountains.
Vitalicio Seguros - Grupo Generali: Look strong fot the TTT but they will have to be present in breakaways if they want sucess.

Before I start I must note thre is a slight display issue with the people not whereing helmets but only in time trials.
Stage 1 - Herning (ITT)
The First stage was a short 8.7km prologue around the city of Herning. Favourites include Gutierez Cataluna, Honchar and the GC outsider Dario Frigo. Bradley McGee and Hruska should also be up at the business end of the race.
Bjornar Vestol (Linda McCartney) was the first man out of the start house on this fine morning in Denmark. A clear sky at about 15 degrees celcius meant it was going to be a nice day for the riders.
Victor Hugo Pena of Vitalicio Seguros started very early and was on top. His respectable time was not one to be sniffed at.
But soon Voskamp (Team Polti), the dutch national time trial champion, was off. He started well and faded slightly. Even so he managed to beat Pena by a full 5 seconds. The time was going to take some beating. Not many people were expecting him to give such a good performance
Then it was Italian national time trial champion Marco Velo (Mercatone) who was off. He too started quickly and matched Voskamp on the first time check. Just a matter of millieseconds separated them as he turned into the final straight. It was down to the wire but Voskamp still held the lead. Velo was so close.
Pena's team mate Hruska came in at 3rd - 3 seconds down. A disapointing ride seeing as he was one of the favourites for the stage. The top 5 was Voskamp, Velo, Hruska, Pena, Sciandri as we came towards the halfway stage.
Jose-Enrique Gutierez (Kelme) was 3 seconds up on Voskamp at the time check. He puched that out to 4 seconds by the finish meaning he was the new leader on the road. But there were still lots of good time trialists to come.
The Australian Bradley McGee (FDJ) was down by less than a second at the split. But his good resistance meant he edged ahead of Gutierez by just 1 second at the finish.
Then came Serhiy Honchar (Liquigas). He blitzed around making mincemeat of the opposition. He put 10 seconds between himself and McGee. It was now over a minute to last place.
Dario Frigo (Fassa Bortolo) was the only man capable of taking his top spot. He did manage a posium but it was one step too short; 2nd. By 5 seconds, He was close but Honchar was just too strong for him over the 2nd half of the stage.
Honchar will wear the Pink jersey tomorrow and Frigo the points.
