Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 7
Smowz
i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7a-parcours_zps64230399.jpg

The last day of Tirreno - Adriatico is usually a day for the sprinters. Today the sprinters have to get over Forca Canapine before they can say they have left the big climbing behind them.

The GC guys seemed happy enough to shake on the race in Chieti. It does mean i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Bewley or i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Boonen could snatch the points title, meanwhile i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bennati will be desperate to take a stage here.

The glory went to the break yesterday with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Jovanovic taking the win and moving into the GC top 25. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Veloso took the KoM lead but will need to be on guard for this immediate uphill 18 or so kilometres.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7b-SinkandHaas_zpsb44f3641.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Haas have slipped away. Both have KoM points in the bag and so are a threat to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Veloso. But the Spaniard will be aware he can nab points too from the pack so he just needs to keep himself up there for that.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7c-toughclimb_zps6b0d8abc.jpg

The sprinters teams are helping i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Vesuvio in controlling the pack today keeping it nice and steady.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Haas takes the 20 points at the top, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam just the 14.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7d-Haastakesclimb_zps3f51f8b4.jpg

It means i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Haas moves to 28 points and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam just the 30 now no longer able to wrest the KoM jersey from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Veloso.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Albasini and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Vanendert attempt to top up their tally’s.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7e-KoMattackerscannotgetthrough_zpsa6a11da6.jpg

But they struggle to move past the pacers gaining just ten and six points respectively only living up through some minor placings.

After the long descent of this tough climb the lead duo have a lead approaching six minutes with 100km to go.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7f-Duohavelongroadahead_zpsfcee0b9e.jpg

They’ll roll through the sprint as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Boonen out kicks i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Bewley behind in the battle for third place. It narrows the gap between the two to just two points on the points competition, both in with a fair chance of winning that.

The second sprint is on a long straight away that is also being used for the finish.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7g-longfinalstriaght_zpsd01416f8.jpg

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7h-Boonenwinsdragrace_zps5cefc518.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Boonen and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Bewley drag race for it again, with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Boonen again the victor drawing them level on points. Worth pointing out that they are still 12 points behind i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Bakelants.

Up front the lead duo can battle for KoM points at the last climb a 3rd category one. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Haas is currently four points down on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam so he cannot really beat him.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7i-Sinktakesfinal_zpsbdc790ba.jpg

They both go for it, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam seals second place in the KoM behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Veloso overall by taking second here with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Haas taking third overall by coming second.

The pack cross three minutes later, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Milka in full chase mode.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7j-Sprintersinfullchase_zps58fedaf5.jpg

The late climbs are harder than expected and the lead duo still have 1.30 lead with 16km left.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars still have numbers forward in what is now a 85 man pack.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7k-duostillhavegoodleadalteon_zpsf2420a95.jpg

The biggest names dropped are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Guldhammer, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Rabon and sprinter i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Corioni.

.... CRASH ....

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7m-Massfavscrash_zpsa9c3fd1d.jpg

A mass crash near the front of the pack, some big names involved.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7n-Domestiquesfallback_zps24ad4073.jpg

It’s a horrible moment as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Vesuvio, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Vespa and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Pearl Adidas drop back.

We are so close to the finish and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma are pressing on with a pack for just over 50 riders.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7o-Pumakeepchasing_zps78f2bfc8.jpg

We move into the last 4kms and it’s confusion here as a sprint train forms behind i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Puma Delage, Gasparotto leading out Bennati with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Pozzato, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Bewley, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Boonen, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Ullisi, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Facci, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sagan and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Hagen following.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Langeveld is attacking though.

Behind the i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Bakelants group is some 2.40 behind the lead group. It looks set for a very fortunate GC win for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/7q-Vessounlucky_zpsf1255d66.jpg

Meanwhile for the stage i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage peels off as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Gasparotto keeps i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Langeveld in his sights.

All the GC men of course making massive moves forward as a result of the top two on GC amongst others crashing.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego will take the GC win here.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Bakelants leads the crash victims group home. A desperate way to end this race for them and in fact the race.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto big winners here, also a good race for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Venchi as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Di Maggio wins young jersey prize following that stage win for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sagan.

Stage results
Pozzato stuns the big three sprinters proving he could be a dangerman for the upcoming Milan San Remo. Bennati disappoints yet again in the sprint. The crash victims lost a whopping 3.24 which combined with same tame racing means they tumble down GC.

Final GC
No doubt about it, this is going to be one Cunego's luckiest victories in his career. Lotto will not be complaining with Claeys promoted up to 4th. Ponzi struggled to infiltrate the bonuses but did grab some on stage 3 to register his best Tirreno finish after 5th in 2011 and 4th in 2012. Hagen did nothing spectacular at all but nets a podium. Schleck,Bakelants, TvG and Ginanni finish behind Jovanovic and Bobridge in 18th through to 21st - horrible luck for the big leaders.

Points
Bewley does indeed just manage to slip on the points jersey crucially beating Boonen once again in the final sprint. Ponzi splits the two rivals ahead of the luckless Bakelants. Bennati finishes a humbling 10th in the points competition with work to do to prepare himself for the Giro.

KoM
Contary to the report on closer inspection Sinkeldam and Haas were never a threat to Veloso's King of the Mountains jersey. Both manage to finish on the podium due to that monster climb at the beginning of this stage. Vanendert and Wallays managed to pick up some points today to score points for their teams.

Youth
Guldhammer was dropped and TvG crashed out of the top four. Happy days for Venchi who enjoyed a good Tirreno. 2012 Milan San Remo winner Ulissi showed very little but in an un-Festina like fashion avoided the last stage crash to take second.

Teams
Wiggle had already secured the teams classification really but Vesuvio and Pearl Adidas who will likely curse this day lost their minor places to Aker and UBS who were both aided by yesterdays breakaway. These teams also leapfrog the surely utterly dejected Vespa team who had a really difficult race.
