As most of you know, world-class mountain biker Burry Stander, tragically died earlier this year when he was hit by a minibus taxi while out on a training ride. His death shocked the world cycling community and sparked a world-wide outrage at the lack of respect for cyclists on the road. There has also been quite an outcry after a series of professional cyclists have been struck by vehicles while out training, as reported in this article.
Sadly, Burry is not the only victim of unsafe roads. Numerous other cyclists have lost their lives due to negligent drivers. In fact, just this weekend at a local road race (about 50km away from my house) a drunk driver in a pick-up truck plowed into the peleton! Miraculously nobody died, but there were serious life-threatining injuries. About 2 years ago another driver in a pick-up truck plowed straight into a peleton, killing 4 people, proofing just how bad things can turn out.
The Burry Stander Foundation is commited to changing the legislation in South African law to improve safety for cyclists on the road. A petition was started to help in the process. So I ask you to please take 2 minutes of your time and just add your name to the petition. After all, cycling is something we all love, so please help us improve the safety of our roads!
