Gerdemann (Sram), Mendes (Prio) (not Plaza), Barredo (AMEX), Popkov (Metinvest), and Proni (Hollistar) headline the favourites for what is now the biggest stage left to race here in Argentina.
Kurth (AMEX), Teunissen (UPC), Tendero (Rothaus),
Montenegro (Bintang), Astarloza (WWE), and Sepulveda (Metinvest) making up the first attacks.
Dennis (Adira), Rollin (Alstom), Chamorro (Hollistar), and
Briceno (Repsol) try to join them but ING won't let a group that big get away so the chase is on.
When ING makes the catch a few of the riders give it a second chance to form a new breakaway,
Kurth (AMEX)
Teunissen (UPC)
Tendero (Rothaus)
Montenegro (Bintang)
Rollin (Alstom)
Briceno (Repsol)
And there is your breakaway of the day as the ride away to a 5'30" lead by the first sprint point.
Where the three best placed GC riders in the breakaway fight it out for a few bonus seconds.
Kurth ahead of Montenegro and Tendero. Every second counts as they are all under 2'15" from Zabriskie's lead. And who knows, could we see the first successful breakaway of the tour?
Then at the next sprint it's reverse order, Tendero over Montenegro and Kurth. But their efforts look quite useless as ING is willing to put in the work and have the gap at 4'15" with 73kms to go.
And ING isn't taking their job lightly either, they have dropped 25 riders (mostly domestics and a few sprinters) 40kms from the finish still. With Van Winden stepping in and using his TT abilities to lift the tempo and is putting the peloton under a lot stress. But will that hurt him by that time the finish rolls around?
These guys must not see what is happening at the back of the peloton as they think they can out-power ING.
Firsanov (BCR)
Betancourt (Hollistar)
Paulinho (WWE)
Rudaskov (Ekspla)
As the climb, attackers, and peloton approaching, Teunissen and Briceno decide their breakaway partners aren't cutting their weight any anymore.
But just as they make the turn to start the climb with 7kms to go, they are rejoined by the men they just left. 30" seconds behind them are the four attackers that somehow got away from ING. And back another 1'30" is the peloton with Sram and BPost now helping ING.
A kilometer later there is one lead group as the attackers have reached the breakaway.
Montenegro doesn't like that one bit and takes off, Teunissen and Briceno try to follow.
Kurth brings back Teunissen and Briceno but Montenegro pushes on. And with the finishing stretch in view the peloton is still chasing 1'45" down the road.
Popkov (Metinvest) makes the first move from the peloton. It's going to be a long chase to pull the leaders back now with just 2.2kms to go.
Barredo (AMEX) takes a turn on the front and brings back Popkov...
And then the breakaway. So it's a 84 rider peloton heading up to the finish! Looks like it is going to be just as close as stage 3 was, which is just what
Zabriskie wants.
1km to go and it's just a free for all, positioning and finding space is key.
And which guys had the best positioning, the ones that were just caught.
Betancourt, Paulinho, and Firsanov lead the charge to the line.
The climb is just so steep that riders are struggling to gain any significant ground on each other.
So it's Betancourt and Paulinho just riding away. The only rider really making a powerful move through the field is Mendes (Prio) who should probably be helping Plaza?!?
Betancourt finishes it off without really any competition, giving Hollistar both hilly stage wins. He started his sprint with a kilometer to go and lead all the way through to the finish line. 2nd goes to man that followed Betancourt up the climb, Paulinho. And 3rd, 15 seconds later, is Mendes.
Barredo, Firsanov, and then finally favourite Gerdemann for places 4th through 6th.
Proni, Durasek, Pineau, and Rudaskov round out the top 10 before a gap opens up!
Zabriskie, Izagirre, Cornu, and Plaza are all in this group that lose 52 seconds to the riders finishing in the top 10. What does that mean to the overall standings?
That the gap wasn't big enough, Zabriskie hangs on by 7 seconds to a consentant Gerdemann who moves in 2nd even with a subpar performance today. Durasek jumps into 3rd with Cornu just dropping to 4th. Paulinho wiggles his way into the top 5 pushing down Izagirre, Plaza, and Barredo into 6th through 8th. And lastly Mendes and Tendero finish out the top 10 with stage winner Betancourt just missing out in 11th.
Other changes include Gerdemann take over the points jersey with Betancourt a point behind in that contest, and Hollistar take full control as the best team with ING losing a bunch of time today dropping all the way to 7th. 2 flat rated stages to come, so ING should be able to hang onto a GC victory for Zabriskie if he just stays out of trouble now, hope I didn't just jinks that... whoops.
