Can anyone recommend a affordable turbo trainer? I need to start getting the miles in and during the week night the turbo will be the best option.

Elite or Tacx products are quite reputed and it's well-deserved, IMO. Check them and anything you can find for your budget should be a good buy.
The important things to check is to have a power switcher on your stem and a rear wheel axis provided with the device.
Also, you'd better go for a flywheel rather than a turbo. Much less noisy.
