Cycling chest pains

I was cycling today, just started my season so I'm building fitness on an exercise bike. I started getting these chest pains, like my heart really pounded against my chest and everytime it hit, it hurt. When I felt it, I took back some gas and it went away, it always laster for only a few minutes, but it kept coming back. Anyone know what this might be?

I might be something, it might be nothing. I sometimes get it when I've just had a period of little training. It's only the first time though, before I get back into gear.

If this was your first time on the bike it might be just that, but if it comes back and doesn't go away you should see a doctor.

Agreed.
I sometimes get it as well in late winter when pressuring myself, but just ride on a slightly lower level and train yourself up (when I'm fit I can't press myself to a level where I get those symptons).

But definitely NOT something to be completely ignored!!!

Go see your doctor. Probably nothing, just indigestion or whatever but there's no point being proud or whatever, if you've any health worries, that's what a doctor's for.

Okay, thanks a lot for the response. Will try to build up a bit slower and if it returns I'll make an appointment with the doc! Thanks!

It's not clear from the symptoms, so we can only guess. As it's been wisely written above, go check it at a doctor, that's why they're paid for.

That being said, a heart problem (heart attack) doesn't feel like that. I was told it's like somebody really heavy is sitting on your chest.
If your heart was trying to escape your chest, it might have to do with an improper digestion. What had you eaten during the previous meal or the previous two meals ? Spicy food plus intensive training don't go along well.
Another possibility is that you carried something heavy recently. Or had some physical work implying your arms to do during the last week. Pain takes a couple of days to show up, and shows up in the chest, which might be disturbing.

Does any of those possibilities ring a bell ?

Well, I did have an internship at an elementary school, which isn't heavy lifting but demanding physically anyway. I just had some sandwiches to eat, so I don't think there was anything wrong there.

Though I remember that my dad has an Athletic Heart Syndrom, I do'nt know if that could be a possible connection? Though you said it was probably not connected to the heart. (hope so!)

Usually about half an hour, it was a tad longer yesterday though, about 45 minutes.

It could be that you drank too much or just that the food wasn't properly digested by the stomach

Maybe, yeah.

Though, could it also be a lack of fat, or is that not plausible? I'm usually 55kg for 1m79 (a pure climber), but over the winter I've lost some weight and I'm only 53kg at the moment, could it be that it's not enough? Or is that completely unrelated with chest pains?

It's probably smart to gain some weight. It could also be that you simply didn't eat enough before

I would say it is just because you are getting back into it, take your time and build your fitness slowly and it should go away. If you are worried then there is no harm in seeing a Doc to put your mind at rest

Okay, thanks mate!

Just one more related question, maybe.
I'm gonna build up, and my ultimate goal is to be in great climbing shape for my holiday in Barcelonette. So usually I do a lot of power-training, to train the strength of my upper legs. I do less stamina-training. But I've no idea if that's the right approach. So does it matter if I do a lot of power-training, or should I start with stamina, riding longer and steadier instead of one-hour power training schedules?

I would start with base miles to build up endurance then mix up your training, endurance will help a lot for climbing

It is generally accepted that you should do longer, slower rides at the beginning of the season to build fitness and stamina then mix in more power rides later on, although how much actual science this is based on, I don't know.

53 kilograms on almost 1.80metres? Jeez, i would have a lot of pain if i was so skeletonish. I believe somethning like 65 kilograms should be a healthy weight for someone of your height.
Start eating Ian (i am 40 kilograms heavier btw). Pfft
