A fantasy NCAA Story
miggi133
Voting is closed! Michigan was chosen to be the winner with 7 votes, A&M 2nd with 5 and Miami 3rd with 4!

Right, I have announced this project in the Café Pedro Thread, and here is the official announcement.

I dug out my Madden NFL08 the other day. And as you may know by now, I have a thing (or more or less a problem) for modding. Thus, I have started modding… After going through several tips and tricks and editors, I found a few tools that are useful and I got an idea of doing a fantasy College Franchise. Id like to report about it, since we already have a good few NFL stories, and an NBA story.
Im am only going to use 32 teams (see the background story beneath) and I have decided that you choose the story line, and thus decide my path… Below you will find 3 background stories for the teams I have given you as a choice. The projects is not entirely ready yet (I have less than half of the teams done) so the voting will run until Im ready Wink

Quick information: The teams are created in the Team creator that comes with the game. All I did was add the occasional stand out athlete to the rosters (such as Landry Jones, Denard Robinson or AJ McCarron). The teams all have Balanced Rosters (strength of ~80 and same strength on offense and defence)…
This should be all for now… (I hope)

The Background Story:

Throughout the History of College Football in the Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the NCAA has been sanctioning Football Programs for Recruiting infractions and illegal payments to student athletes by boosters. After ‘bama claimed their 2nd title in three years in 2011, the NCAA launched a thorough investigation throughout the FBS to uncover an illegal recruitment conglomerate. After seeing the sheer size of the whole operation, the NCAA decided to downgrade the FBS status to a Division 1-a, and select 32 College Programs as a new flagship Division for College Football under full control of the NCAA. This became a necessity, in order to avoid introducing the “Death Penalty” (compare with SMU Mustangs) to several programs in the country.

Go Blue
Spoiler
This story will follow the Michigan Wolverines Football Program on their way back from being a regular Preseason favourite to regular final standings cock up. Michigan has collected 11 National Championships since its inception, most of which under the leadership of Head coach and Michigan Legend Fielding H. Yost. However, despite a number of pretentious seasons, the Wolverines locked up their last National Championship in 1997 under Lloyd Carr. The last undefeated season was achieved back in 1992. Since then, the program has seen its heights depths, but BCS Bowl Game appearances remained frequent. The overall deterioration of the program remains a concern and continued losses to Ohio State bring the Team onto the verge of the crisis. With the change in the NCAA Division I format, the program looks set to get back to the glory days. The new format also ensures 2 games against Ohio State each year, which could intensify the rivalry between the two teams, back to the level of the Bo Schembechler – Woody Hays days.

It’s all about the U
Spoiler
The University of Miami Hurricanes or better known as “THE U” is a program that has been struggling severely since their last National Championship in 2001. The big Rise of “The U” began in the 1980’s when Howard Schnellenberger reset the whole recruiting process of the Hurricanes, providing scholarships to exceptional athletes from the crime stricken areas of Miami and the greater area, which led to a huge talent pool to the wealthy Suburb of Coral Gables. Schnellenberger left “The U” in ’83 with a National Championship. Both of his successors, Jimmy Johnson and Denis Eriksson, continued those recruiting practises and added 3 more National Championships on their own, before the program was facing heavy sanctions for Booster infractions… After rebuilding the program, the U came back, but after 2001, the program struggled heavily with being stuck in mediocrity. Now the Program looks to come back and build a dynasty, just like in the good old days.

A&Manziel

Spoiler
Texas A&M is one of the most underrated Programs in the country. With only 3 National Championships, It is the Program with the least Rings in these selections. The last Championship is also more than 70 years in the past, which is far too long for the guys in the Athletic Department. A&M has collected many Championships in other disciplines, and now they want to win Big on the Football stage too. Before the demise of the FBS, A&M looked set to join the SEC, to match up with Alabama and LSU on a more frequent basis. The new system ensures two such games against last year’s #1 and #2 ranked teams in the country each year, and freshman QB Johnny Manziel, or Johnny Football as he is often referred to, is one of the finest two threat QB’s in the country. The future of this program looks bright, and if Johnny Football can pull the team, College Station is going to erupt with joy over regular wins over Bama and LSU!

The Rankings:
Well, Every week I will update the Rankings. As we have a diminished number of teams, we also have a dimnished number of ranked teams...
I have decided to take 10, which is a handy number. The very first rankings will be based on the best 10 teams (in my selection) from the AP Poll. After that, which ever team leads the NFL standings in game after 4 weeks will be no.1 in the BCS Ranking and so on... From the second year on the final standings, from the previous season, will then be the preseason rankings for the new season.
Spoiler
I was originally thinking of making a point system, as in Alabama is No.1 at the start of the sason so they get 10 and the second gets 9 etc., but since the best 12 teams make the playoffs, it is not guaranteed that every team in this ranking system will appear in the playoffs. Thus I have decided to apply this system on the side, like the Ap Poll which is not official and update it that way. So we will have two Champions: The BCS Champion and the AP Poll (I would call it the 'Daily Poll) Champion

Here are the preseason Rankings:

Michigan: Go Blue

I declare the vote over! Michigan it is!

Here is a sneak peak on Michigans troubled history from 2008- now!

Spoiler
Rodriguez era (2008–2010)
Following Carr's retirement, Michigan launched a coaching search that ultimately saw Rich Rodriguez lured away from his alma mater, West Virginia University. Rodriguez's arrival was the beginning of a major upheaval at Michigan. Rodriguez replaced the pro-style offense that had been used by Carr and replaced it with his spread offense. The offseason saw major attrition in Michigan's roster. The expected starting quarterback Ryan Mallett departed the program, stating that he would be unable to fit in a spread offense. Starting wide receivers Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington both decided to forgo their senior seasons and enter the NFL Draft. After the offseason ended, Michigan faced a depth crisis and was forced to start players with very little playing experience.

Michigan entered the 2008 season with uncertainty as to how the new regime would handle the transition. Michigan's season ended up being among the worst in the program's history, as the team posted a 3–9 record and missed a bowl game for the first time since 1974 and suffered their first losing campaign since 1967. The 2009 season saw many changes from the previous year. A new practice facility replaced Oosterbaan Fieldhouse as Michigan's indoor practice facility, and two new quarterbacks, Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson, became the focus of the offseason. The week before the season began, however, the Detroit Free Press accused the team of violating the NCAA's practice time limits. While the NCAA conducted investigations, Michigan won its first four games, including a last second victory against its rival Notre Dame. The season ended in disappointment, however, as Michigan went 1–7 in its last eight games and missed a bowl for the second straight season.

Rodriguez's final season began with new hope in the program, as Robinson was named the starting quarterback over Forcier. Robinson led the Wolverines to a 5–0 start, but after a defeat to Michigan State at home, the Wolverines finished the season 2–5 over their last seven games. Michigan did, however, qualify for a bowl game with a 7–5 record, and clinched its bowl berth in dramatic fashion against Illinois, with Michigan winning 67–65 in three overtime periods. The game was the highest combined scoring game in Michigan history, and saw Michigan's defense give up the most points in its history. Michigan was invited to the Gator Bowl to face Mississippi State, where it lost 52–14. The Michigan defense set new school records as the worst defense in Michigan history. In the middle of the season, the NCAA announced its penalties against Michigan for the practice time violations. The program was placed on three years probation and docked 130 practice hours, which was twice the amount Michigan had exceeded.

Rodriguez was fired following the bowl game, with athletic director David Brandon citing Rodriguez's failure to meet expectations as the main reason his dismissal. Rodriguez left the program winless against rivals Michigan State and Ohio State, and compiled a 15–22 record, the worst record of any head coach in Michigan history.

(2011–present)
Michigan announced the hiring of Brady Hoke on January 11, 2011. Hoke led the Wolverines to 11 wins in his first season, beating rival Notre Dame in Michigan's first night game at Michigan Stadium in a spectacular comeback. Despite losing to Iowa and Michigan State, the Wolverines finished with a 10–2 regular season record with their first win over Ohio State in seven years. The Wolverines received an invitation to the Sugar Bowl in which they defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies, 23–20, in overtime.

Key Player Analysis

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8c/Denard_Robinson_Press_Conference.jpg/220px-Denard_Robinson_Press_Conference.jpg

#16, Denard Robinson

Michigans key player is without a doubt Denard Robinson... In order to win out big again, the Team has to rely on the presence of Denard. And what a presence that is! No quarter back in the league is more versatile than him. Denard posesses a strong arm to find the open holes downfield. But even if all his receivers are covered, Robinson still has the abillity to get the first down, by using his exceptional athletic abillity and his speed, that isnt shy of the best running backs and receivers in any level of football. His versatillity will surely make him a finalist in the Heisman ranking, and he is already one of the greatest QB's that have ever taken the field in Ann Arbour. Look for Denard to immortilize himself this season.

Some experts, however, say, that Denard lacks the abillity to scan the field thoroughly and makes irrational decisions to often. Robinson also looks to run prematurely on to many occasions which ends in drops in the backfield and often makes him face long third down situations. The expert consensus is unanimous, and it is widely agreed upon that Denard will enter the draft a solid third rounder, at either the running back or Wide receiver position. But No.16 wants to set the experts straight with this season!

I'd go with Matt Barkley

We have a winner for the trojans Riddle Wink To be fair, it was more than easy...

Anyway, ste: This story is not gonna be a NFL story, but rather a story about college teams, meaning that (ideally) i only have top players for a maximum of 5 years...Wink

To the point i made above: I still havent resolved the issue on how to approach the incoming players, but i figure that i can make that up as we go along... (hopefully Wink)...

Anywho,
I have updated the first post with an explanation for the rankings, so have a look at it and tell me if you think that it'll do Wink

Right, misinterpreted that one... Wink

Ok, Except for a minor few issues, I think I got it going now... Ages are changed, so are contracts (all players have 5 years). Since I didnt get the right editor working, Ill be using NFL Stadiums for the Teams (meaning that Nevada plays at Aloha Stadium or the Longhorns at Texas stadium. At least its better than having the limited custom stadiums that are missing whole sections... Wink ) What I now try to do, is get the logos working, but should that not work, ill just get the party started without them, cause I am really anxious to get this going.

I looked at the results from the Voting:
The story line we will be seeing is the Michigan one, whih was the most voted for with 7 votes. Second was A&Manziel with 5 votes and sadly the U came in third place... (I kinda grew fond of it Wink )

Anyway, coming up: Go Blue!

EDIT: Got the logos working... The only minor issue is that the endzones without any distinctive colour are black, but that is a little bug with which we all can live with I guess... Wink

I shall post Week One Preview Tomorrow, so stay tuned, there are some great matchups in week 1 already... Wink

Before you read this, be told: This long report is a one off! In all the other Pregame reports, I will only discuss the game of the week and the Michigan Matchup!

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/69/ESPN_College_GameDay_logo.svg/175px-ESPN_College_GameDay_logo.svg.png

You are watching ESPN-College Game Day with Chris Fowler!

Fowler: Hello and welcome to ESPN’s College Game day in Week 1, from beautiful Stanford California. We have some really exciting matchups ahead of us and in the next hour we will take you through today’s program. With me is, as usual, Lee Corso alongside Kirk Herbstreit and Samantha Ponder and let’s get right to it, Lee, will Bama win their second title in a row this year or can Matt Barkley lead the Trojans to new glory and nock the Crimson Tide off their Thrown?

Corso: Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, will we? We have some exciting Matches ahead, along with a 16 game season, and today’s results will surely be an indicator as to who is hot and who is not, but I won’t give any opinion on the final standing until the first teams have locked up their Bowl game Berths…

Fowler: Well all of that would be more convincing if you weren’t wearing that Elephant mask… Anywho, let’s have a look at today’s action, and we can see some very exciting Matchups here. Penn State is traveling to Columbus to take on Ohio State in their week 1 matchup. Both teams are unranked, but it still promises to be a good game. But Kirk, you had a closer look at the two teams, so what did you come up with?

Herbstreit: Well, when I focused on this Matchup, I noticed that its al about stopping Ohio through the air. If Penn can limit the passes, their defensive line should be good enough to hold up against this O-Line, which clearly has its strength when playing the pass. On the other hand, Ohio just have to go out there and play their game. They are physically stronger, and more talented on both sides of the ball, due to heavy NCAA restrictions for Penn State. In my opinion, this will be a walk in the park for Ohio.

Fowler: Thanks Kirk. Next on my list is the game between Michigan and Michigan State, a huge matchup for both teams! The Paul Bunyan Trophy can potentially switch places up to 3 times per year now and that adds to the excitement.

Corso: It sure does. And the Wolverines will be fired up for this game, as they travel to East Lansing after losing the last four Matchups. I’d say expect Denard to take this game all the way down to the wire and Michigan will win this game with a last minute field goal.

Fowler: A brief commentary on that one Lee, but we all unanimously agree that Michigan looks to be the stronger team. Let’s get to the biggest Matchup of Week 1! #2 ranked Alabama plays host to the #3 ranked LSU Tigers. A match that comes to early in the season to be any indicator, but one thing for sure, it’ll be a fight down to the wire and I for one cannot decide who is gonna win this. Both Teams are just so good…

Herbstreit: It is indeed a scary matchup, especially for LSU, since they already have to travel to Bryant Denny Stadium in week one, which is not very desirable. But on the other hand, it could play out to their advantage to play in Tuscaloosa now, since Bama is at the same point like all the other teams. And one thing for sure: Bama will have to travel to Death Valley this season, which adds some extra spice into the equation, cause if LSU can knock a few opponents of early, they’ll have the confidence to beat Bama at home and maybe even claim the #1 seed in the country. Surely a match to watch today.

Fowler: So that leaves only one match left for us. The Nationally Televised College Gameday Matchup between unranked Stanford and #5 Georgia, here in Stanford Stadium. My favourite for this game is clearly Georgia, with Aaron Murray at QB. They just simply are the better Team in my eyes.

Ponder: I’d like to disagree! Sure, Stanford has lost some valuable offensive power with Andrew Luck and Coby Fleener turning professional with the Indianapolis Colts, but we must not forget that Stepfan Taylor, the Stud Running Back has returned for another year with the Cardinal. Surely this accounts for something. And that little something is Speed and Power in the backfield. The Cardinal isn’t that bad through the air either, judging from practice Footage. I say this is Stanfords for the taking!

Fowler: All that’s left then is the Lee Corso Tradition… What is your final word Lee?

Corso: Well, I know it’s a bit early for Christmas, but I brought my tree along anyway… It’s never too early to prepare for Christmas… And of course a Cardinal Victory!

Fowler: Thats it from the Pregame show of ESPN's College Game Day. My name is Chris Fowler, and with me as always were Kirk Hebstreit, Lee Corso and the wonderful Samantha Ponder. Good Bye and enjoy the games!
