Di Luca wins Giro AND Sprinter's Jersey in Giro???

I just played through the entire Giro and barely squeaked out a 2nd place out of Andy Schleck with Di Luca winning by 10 minutes. It would have been 6 minutes had I not made an ill-advised long breakaway that caused Schleck to bonk.  I did make another mistake on the first mountain stage by not setting my domestiques to haul butt at 99 effort when the attacks started to pull back everyone and then launching Schleck after they've pulled back everyone or most everyone. Or I should have gone with the big favorites immediately when the attacks started coming.
However, my problem is that Di Luca participated in the sprints on EVERY Stage and won the green jersey with my guy, Haedo winning 7! stages and still getting second in the green jersey. That's just freaking ridiculous. I think there's not enough of a form or fitness or recovery penalty for participating in the sprints if a rider's not a sprinter or doesn't have sprint stats of 72 or above. |

Pettachi won 5 in mine and andy won by 41 points, he didn't even get second.

the points jersey is only a sprinter's jersey at the Tour de France, where the flat stages are worth many more points.
everywhere else, it's a consistency jersey. Di Luca came second this year. he would've won if so many sprinters hadn't dropped out giving Petacchi an easy shot at most flat stages.
last year Bettini won by chasing points in every type of stage. same thing in 2005. 2004 was Petacchi's because he won every single mass sprint. 2003 Simoni won. etc etc etc
so, it's not really something unusual for Di Luca to win it.
the real problem is that GC candidates attack in every transitional stage (thus getting many more points than they should), but that is even worse for the GC.

Interesting that you mention that other riders who are not sprinters have won the points jersey in the Giro...thanks for letting me know about that, I thought the rules for the points jersey were the same everywhere as they were in the Tour.
I still do think there needs to be a small recovery penalty assessed to non-sprinters who participate in the sprints |
